College Football Playoff

Would 10-2 with losses to Penn State and Oregon get us in? Probably no signature win, but a lot of good wins with that schedule. 10 wins was good enough for Tennessee to sneak in.

Yeah I think so... We'd have beaten ISU Indiana and IL if that's the case right oh and USC? Those outta be looked at as good Ws if things play out how many think. One of those 3 could also be in the playoffs too. IL I think has a pretty legit shot if they lose to us or not.

9-3 is where it'd get murky if we end up being that. They'll be a lot of those teams out there and comparing the resumes will be what the ESPN and Fox talk shows talk about at nauseum. They'll be 8-4 SEC teams that ESPN will want to put in over a 9-3 Iowa team just because...

On a regular season I the Big Ten should get three or four teams. The question is will Iowa be able to finish third or fourth in the Big Ten.

Recent Iowa history has not been kind to Iowa.

Our starting QB doesn’t have to be perfect but he will need to be very good and consistent, AND AVOID INJURIES.

When was the last time our starting QB was very good, consistent, and went through the season without injuries?

If our NFL drafted running back from last year was returning then that would be a game changer and we would be considered among the favorites to be one of the big ten teams in the playoffs.

Keep our backfield healthy and we have a chance. Also, our defense will have to step up a bit from last year’s performance.

Our chances? I wouldn’t bet the farm on it, but maybe a well used international tractor and a well used hay bailer.

Yeah and our QB1 this yr likes to put his shoulder down and run quite a bit.... Odds that he takes 80% of the snaps this yr to me isn't great... To me that's the over under if he can hit that mark or over I like our chances at having a damn good yr. But he's got to both stay healthy and play well. Week 2 on the road against ISU we'll learn a lot about what our ceiling will be.

I think if Iowa is going to go to the playoffs, that is going to have to include victories over Iowa State (who will be ranked at the time), and either Oregon or Penn State.

Losses to Iowa State, Penn State and Oregon will disqualify Iowa.

On the other hand, 10-2 with wins over Iowa State and Penn State (or Oregon) put us in, even with a loss to USC on the road.

Personally, another 8-4 season with Iowa's very difficult schedule would be a fine season from my perspective. The Big Ten is getting TOUGH.

they should get rid of the stupid bowls and just expand it to a 32 team playoff. It wouldn't be that difficult if they got rid of the conference championship games and the meaningless bowl games.

Iowa does not play Illinois this fall.

I like bowl games and prefer that the playoffs not be expanded that far. That would be 17 games for the two teams in the nattie. Personally, what has made college football so unique is that the regular season is so important that every game is practically a must win. If you expand the playoffs to 32, Alabama will play 4 cupcakes and probably sit their starters for the Iron Bowl just to stay healthy for a playoff they are pretty much guaranteed to be in. It would water things down too much.

I would have preferred that they went to 8 and left it there, but the almighty dollar will always trump keeping a great product in its current form. 16 teams in the playoffs is too many. 2023 Iowa did not deserve to be in any playoffs, but it would have been with a 16 team format. We should be rewarding elite teams, not trying to sneak in the 5th best SEC team.

I grew up being a Chicago Bears fan. Walter sweetness Payton was one of my idols. He was a very tough running back and for most of his career broke rushing records without the advantage of an all pro lineup like Emmit had in Dallas. For most of his career he was the offense.

One things Walter leaned that led to his longevity was to avoid the hard hits. He knew when to duck down and not try to pile drive the defenders coming up to hit him.

It would be wise for our QB’s to do the same, avoid serious injuries, and live to fight another day.

Very very much so. They'll be situations where on big 3rd downs in the 4th q of games where obviously we'd want to see him do whatever it takes to get the 1st. But if we lose him to a shoulder injury in the 1st q of week 2 to ISU cause on a 2nd and 8 he's trying to run over a LB it just wouldn't be very smart at all to do. He's a pretty smart guy I think he and Lester both know it and hopefully will keep him out of harms way as much as possible.

"One of the things Walter learned that led to his longevity was to avoid the hard hits. He knew when to duck down and not try to pile drive the defenders coming up to hit him."

Yep, and he also never stayed on the ground very long...to eliminate the 'accidental' ankle, foot, and knee twisting that tacklers would pull on him as they got off him. As soon as he hit the ground he'd be tapping the defenders helmet, telling him to get off, and he'd be up off the ground like a shot!

This team has the best OLine it's had since before BF became OC. Best QB Leadership since CJ. Best speed at speed positions in 2 decades. If it can all come together this year, it'll be the best team since '02.
Replacing 7 Sr starters on Defense will be tough, and unlike anything that I can remember in recent years. Last year was the year to do something special, with a softer schedule. Iowa's D relies heavily on the LBs being in the right position, all the time. Higgins replaced Campbell in an amazing way, from the first game he started. Having that happen with his replacement would be like hitting the lottery twice -- I'm expecting some growing pains the first 4 games of the season.

Agreed,

Will be nice to see if the offense can carry the weight of the team on their shoulders for a change. Hopefully we can survive the first four games and gel together as a complete football team. The offense was better last year and the defense a little bit less than what we had seen over the last three or four years. If there is an offensive coordinator who know how to make corrections it is Parker.

We all know that the sparkplugs in Iowa's engine rest upon the shoulders of our QB position........... and offensive line.

I haven't been on the site as much as I have in the past. Catching up I guess and suspect will be on much more again now that football is starting. I seen the site now has a new administrator? Again, I may far behind! Well welcome!
