Iowa Basketball Recruits

The problem is that Basic Possession formulas (there are multiple) are essentially guesswork. This formula (which is the most common one used) isn't nearly as drastic as the one you posted:

FGA + (0.475 x FTA) - ORB + TO = 70.36 possessions per game for Locure's team & 53.59 possessions for Carton's team.

To this scale, Carton's stats would be: 31.7pts, 8.25 rbds, 1.7 steals, 3.93 assists, 4.32 turnovers

Compare that to Locure's stats of: 28.8pts, 5.3 rbds, 4 steals, 5.93 assists, 3.86 turnovers

Remember, we're talking about point guards here, not forwards lol

Thanks, I just used the first one I found on a google search. Notable that Carton's TOs are higher. With Locure having higher assists, steals, and lower TOs, I definitely can see the basis of your "better PG right now" argument.

As an add on, talking about per-possession stats is generally not considered a "load of crap", and the idea of doing so is not "[my] little calculation." I am not the one who first said, "Hey, maybe games with 100 possessions will result in more counting stats than games with 80 possessions."

You are not swayed at all by the fact that Carton scores and rebounds significantly more on a per-possession basis? Locure definitely assists and steals more on a per possession basis.
We're talking about point guards. Do you really want a point guard that averages more turnovers than assists?

Thank you :) That's my point.

Good point. Perhaps this is where scouts are looking at growth potential? Having watched them both play, do their teams ask them to do similar things? Or does Carton play off the ball quite a bit?

Not that I've seen. A couple of things I've noticed with him is that he takes it to the rim quite a bit and is pretty good at it, however, he isn't that good of a passer (at least compared to Locure). He's not too bad man on man D, but he's simply not as quick as Locure.

As far as Locure, because he is the show, he draws defenders quite a bit and is able to gain more assists due to that. He's also very quick in passing lanes, which is one reason why his steals are so high.

Edit: I'm not saying Carton isn't the show on his team. Both of their respective teams are centered around them.

I wonder what they view as their top priorities in '19? I wanted to double-check the number of open-scholarships they had that year (2, as of now), which led me to a list of their open offers. It appears they have 4 offers out for PGs, 3 for SGs (they include verbal commit Patrick McCaffrey as a SG), 4 for SF, 7 for PF, and 1 for C.

Seems like they should be leaning a little more heavily towards backcourt.

Again, with Carton, Iowa isn't even on the horizon of predictions of where he will go. Its like 90% Wisconsin and a small % think Marquette has a chance. Waiting too long on Locure is a big gamble as better offers are sure to come and we will once again be out in the cold sucking our thumb.

Catching up on this thread I was about to tell cp87 not to bother asking tk questions becasue he will just get a meme as a response. Then I keep reading and tk actually typed up a thoughtful post. Im proud of you tk!

I did watch the Muscatine / Bettendorf game last year. Joe had no trouble doing whatever he wanted to do and Carton did guard him, well initially anyway... before Joe went around him and had to have at least one other guy pick him up. Bettendorf went with a zone at one point to keep Joe from driving.... mistake. Joe's problem is that no one else on the Muscatine team would start for another team in the conference.

Looks like Locure might have been 2 rbds short of a triple double tonight vs Ottumwa. Apparently he had 31pts, 14 assists, 8 boards, 4 steals, 1 block. Not too shabby

A few things surprise me from all these updates. First big take away for me is Carton's team record. If you have that big of a recruit, especially a point guard you should be winning games. Second, Xavier Foster's team seems to keep winning even if he doesn't show up. This can be important as you make a run for the State Tourney. Third, for most of these players, there isn't much consistency on scoring. Seems like Wieskamp and Locure are the most consistent of the bunch, along with Green.

Green is the only player I have seen in person and he is going to be a good one. Really impressed me when I saw him.
