Here's an interesting article over on BHBPs I thought you'd get a kick out of.

It's always interesting when I see someone saying that Ulis was a lock to Iowa until Kentucky offered, even though Ulis said he was going to Michigan St until Cal offered.
Couldn't help but notice that either... Makes you wonder what do they know different if anything or if it's just as made up as anyone else guessing.

It really is amazing to me how Locure fits perfectly to fix what we constantly complain about at the PG position, yet folks still put their blinders on....

"That would leave the staff with Plan C. At this point, that looks like Des Moines North product Tyreke Locure. Locure, to me, looks a lot like Wes Washpun did - except he’s a better pure shooter....
Locure too seems to be a fallback recruit. He’s also slight in stature at only 5’10” and he is lightning quick with the ball in his hands. The primary difference between he and Washpun is his shooting stroke, which looks quite good as a high school junior."

I don't know why we don't give more attention to Locure. Carton is not coming to Iowa. He will probably end up at Wiscy and we will be left with plan D at point. Again.

I wish North played Bettendorf so we could see Locure go head to head with Carton, I mean watch Locure pick Carton's pocket.

It really sounds like, to be fair to Fran, his failure to land a top PG to this date is mostly unluckiness in how things worked out. But if he fails to land one of these new targets and it ends up being a plan D PG, it's on him. Scratching my head why he hasn't offered Locure to be the first P5 coach to do so.

Yeah I think he hasn't offered mostly because he has multiple other offers out there for other PGs that he thinks he has a shot with. I'm guessing if as time goes on that he's less confident in landing any of them he'll come back to Locure and hope it's not too late kinda thing... He probably doesn't want to 'settle' on him if he thinks he can still get DJ Carnton. Myself I'd offer Locure now and not wait. He can't afford to shoot an airball and not get any of them

Locure is a much better pg than Carton.

Probably too early to say for sure on that to be fair. But I don't think it's a given either way. But since Fran has offered Carton it's obvious witch way he's leaning
Locure is definitely a better pg than Carton at this point in time. Maybe that will change in a year or two.

Locure is a much better pg than Carton.

That is a pretty bold statement considering that the professional talent evaluators (coaches, recruiting services) whole-heartedly disagree.

One thing to keep in mind when comparing stats is that the state of Iowa has no shot-clock for HS BB, and pace of play can vary pretty wildly between teams. For instance, using the common formula for calculating possessions...

Basic Possession Formula=0.96*[(Field Goal Attempts)+(Turnovers)+0.44*(Free Throw Attempts)-(Offensive Rebounds)]

...and the quik stats available, Des Moines North averages 77 possessions per game, compared to Bettendorf's 55 possessions per game.

If you scale Carton's per-possession-stats up to Des Moines North's # of possessions per game, Carton would be at 33.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, and 4.2 apg (compared to Locure's 28.8, 5.3, and 5.9).

Carton's and Locure's shooting %'s are almost identical. By all accounts, Carton is a far superior defensive player.

Maybe Locure is as good or even better than Carton (I have never seen either play), but I am wondering what evidence you are using to claim he is MUCH BETTER?

I've seen both of them play in person, so I will kindly ignore that load of crap you just posted. :) BTW, I think it's cute how you conveniently left out steals in your little calculation.

As I said, I have not watched either of them. You have more basis for an opinion than I.

Nothing "cute" about excluding steals, I just picked the 3 most common boxscore stats. If interested, Locure is at 4 stls/game, and Carton's scaled up # is 1.8 stls/game.

Steals can be a bit misleading. In some cases, they are very valuable. However, if those steals come from gambling and abandoning your defensive responsibilities, then the bad can outweigh the good. Allen Iverson was always among league-leaders in steals, but was not a good defender. Russell Westbrook was #12 in stls/game last year, but 140th in Defensive Real Plus-Minus (12th among point guards, as that stat tends to favor big men).

I don't have an interest in claiming one is better than the other, I would just like Iowa to get a good player. I was just interested what you were using as the basis of such an against-the-grain claim. Who knows, maybe Iowa will luck out and get both.

The problem is that Basic Possession formulas (there are multiple) are essentially guesswork. This formula (which is the most common one used) isn't nearly as drastic as the one you posted:

FGA + (0.475 x FTA) - ORB + TO = 70.36 possessions per game for Locure's team & 53.59 possessions for Carton's team.

To this scale, Carton's stats would be: 31.7pts, 8.25 rbds, 1.7 steals, 3.93 assists, 4.32 turnovers

Compare that to Locure's stats of: 28.8pts, 5.3 rbds, 4 steals, 5.93 assists, 3.86 turnovers

Remember, we're talking about point guards here, not forwards lol

I've seen both of them play in person, so I will kindly ignore that load of crap you just posted. :) BTW, I think it's cute how you conveniently left out steals in your little calculation.

As an add on, talking about per-possession stats is generally not considered a "load of crap", and the idea of doing so is not "[my] little calculation." I am not the one who first said, "Hey, maybe games with 100 possessions will result in more counting stats than games with 80 possessions."

You are not swayed at all by the fact that Carton scores and rebounds significantly more on a per-possession basis? Locure definitely assists and steals more on a per possession basis.
