~ Iowa Basketball Career Records to Watch ~

Sports Reference says 1531 total points and 652 rebounds. If he comes back he should top the list in both categories barring injury. Assuming averaging about 17 PPG and 9 RPG.

Yep, he's sitting pretty good to be around 5th in blocks as well.

Just looked at Big 10 career and season leaders. Alfraud had 749 points his senior year and 2438 career. I'd really like Garza to pass that guy for season total.

Also Gustafson had 2800 career points and scored 1001 last year. As great as Garza has been, Gustafson still is probably the greatest Hawkeye basketball player ever.

I'm sure the spreadsheets will get updated at some point but for those with curious minds like me here are Luka's totals after three seasons:

points 1559
rebounds 660
blocks 104
free throws made 417

and while I'm at it, here's Joe W after two years:

points 823
rebounds 361
made 3s 111
free throws made 174

Thanks for posting, I was thinking I had this all updated but apprently the craziness of March got to me... Anyways I have updated the running totals on the first page. Note I think Garza is actually at 1,559 points and 305 free throws made. ;)

Thx for updating.

Now we can realistically speculate where Luka might end up in some of these categories. There is a coulda/woulda/shoulda on all the numbers for all the players. Are these Luka's final numbers? If he does come back, how will the pandemic effect his final numbers?

Some interresting questions there. For Luka's sake, I hope it's his decision and not the pandemic deciding for hm on where he ends up in the record books.

OK, I'll start the speculation. There is no telling how many points Luka by not playing in the BTT or NCAA.

Assuming he does come back I don't think it's a given that he breaks the scoring record. First if he's injured or even gets dinged up that could have a significant impact.

More importantly I don't think next year's team will need him to score as many points. He could make as much or more of an impact with leadership instead of points. Plus if JBo, CJ, Joe W all come back healthy they will be scoring points plus whatever contributions we get from the rest of the team. Plus, in the paint, Nunge and Ogundele will need minutes to grow their games. It will be interesting to say the least.

If Luka doesn't come back, it's a moot point, his numbers are what they are.

If Garza comes back and everything is back to "normal" I can see Garza catching Marble to become Iowa's all-time leading scorer. He needs to average 18 points a game through the regular season, which he is more than capable of.

Garza is one of the best scorers in the nation. You don't give him less touches for the sake of getting other people more touches. It doesn't matter who else is on the team. Garza will be the most efficient and best scoring option.

Garza passed Dean Oliver and Adam Haluska for 10th all time in scoring. He needs 27 points to pass Jess Settles for 9th.

He broke a tie with Greg Brunner for 10th all time in blocked shots. He needs 14 blocks to pass Michael Payne and 15 blocks to pass Nicholas Baer.

He's still quite a ways out from cracking the top 10 in career rebounds.
