In this thread we name all the coaches BARTA hired who turned out great

I liked Mr. Davis's passion and style of play. But I'm not so convinced his "record" was everything it's cracked up to be. He lived for several years off Raveling's recruits. After that, there was a considerable drop-off in talent.

Always wondered what the program would have looked like with Mr. Davis as the head coach and Raveling as an assistant in charge of recruiting. But Raveling never would have accepted that and hated the "fishbowl" existence of Iowa City.

Did not say for that year, but prior years up until that point, Mr. Davis earned it. Fran....somewhat compared to Mr. Davis.

I agree actually... Tom definitely had more good will, different times..all I am saying is, he had bad teams too and late in his program. He never went to 4 straight NCAA's and ...IMO, firing Fran right now is way too knee jerk.

I think Fran has 2 years max to get the ship turned around and for the base to really be excited about. And, with each added loss this year, it gets harder to defend.

agree 100% - I've stated on here a TON that he gets next season to get Iowa back firmly in the dance or he should be fired immediately after. I also agree that with every loss and with how this season in panning out, it gets harder to defend. But again, with perspective.... Tom Davis had years like this and up until this season, Fran has been 34--20 the last 3 seasons at Iowa in the B1G conference. That's good enough to not just run him after a down season.

So the OP got me to wondering just who GB had hired. Found this gem on WIkipedia:

Barta has hired numerous new head coaches during his tenure as Athletic Director. Including Mark Hankins and Tyler Stith, Men's Golf. Ross Wilson men's tennis;Todd Lickliter and Fran McCaffery, Men's Basketball. Rick Heller, Baseball. Joey Woody, Track & Field. Sharon Dingman and Bond Shymansky, Women's Volleyball. Steve Pitzker and Andrew Carter, Women's Crew. Dave DiIanni, Women's Soccer. Katie Dougherty and Sasha Schmid, Women's Tennis. Megan Menzel, Women's Golf. Lisa Cellucci, Field Hockey. Marla Looper, Softball.

Hmmm. Have any of those turned out to be great???

But wait, kids, there's more:

Iowa's NACDA Director's Cup Big Ten Rankings By Year Under Barta: 2006-07: 11th(out of 11); 2007-08: 11th(out of 11); 2008-09: 10th(out of 11); 2009-10: 11th(out of 11); 2010-11: 9th(out of 11); 2011-12: 12th(out of 12); 2012-13: 12th(out of 12); 2013-14: 12th(out of 12); 2014-15: 10th(out of 14); 2015-16: 13th(out of 14)

But Gary does love him some contract extensions, especially when they accrue to him:

In February 2016, University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld extended Barta's contract through June 30, 2021. The new contract includes $4.6 million in guaranteed compensation over its life with an increase each in annual base salary, annual deferred compensation, and annual bonuses.

Well done, Gary. Well done!

NACDA - OMG that is bad! Nice find.

The motto for University of Iowa athletics ought to be "Iowa, where mediocrity is good enough."

At least based on Barta's Wiki entry, it appears his biggest accomplishments are spending money on buildings and stuff. Nothing wrong with that. But it would be nice if those investments led to greater accomplishments on the court and on the field. Debatable that that has actually happened.

The second paragraph of Gary Barta's tenure at Iowa according to Wikipedia:

Barta became Director of Athletics on August 1, 2006. Since his arrival at Iowa, Barta has spearheaded numerous upgrades to current athletic facilities and the construction of many new facilities. Including the expansion of the administrative office complex at Carver–Hawkeye Arena. The expansion of the wrestling training facility and building of new practice gyms and weight training facilities also at Carver–Hawkeye Arena. The upgrade of the sound system, scoreboard and video boards at Kinnick Stadium. The Construction of the Hoak Family Golf Complex. The building of both the P. Sue Beckwith Boat House and the Campus Recreation and Aquatic Center in partnership with the University's Department of Recreational Services. In the fall of 2014 the new Stew & LeNore Hansen Football Performance Center was completed which includes the new Richard O. Jacobson Football Operations Center and a new 120 yard indoor practice field. Also in late 2014, a new artificial baseball playing surface was installed at Duane Banks Field. In 2016 new video scoreboards were installed at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"Iowa: The Best of the Worst."

He can't win with Iowa fans, it's a pretty tough gig. He now doesn't get credit for Fran because of 1 bad year that isn't even finished yet. Iowa fans want Fran gone now after 1 step back, and they turned on him in a heart beat. Like the second they could turn on him they have. So, Gary's a giant goof because he doesn't have a knee jerk reaction to Iowa's misfortunes this season and doesn't blow things up.

Fran was 34-20 in B1G play the last 3 years. That's good.

I get it that hes 1-5 RIGHT NOW

but... Mr. Davis was 4-14 in his fourth season and 5-13 in his eighth.

Anyone who has watched Iowa basketball knows Fran’s D is not just a 2017-2018 problem, it’s a program issue that has been going on his entire tenure. Whether it’s been in the NIT or NCAA, the last game of every Iowa season has been a complete exposure of his D and it’s inability to create stops. Wide open layups & wide open 3s usually because guys are out of position on overplays or hedging.

That’s not knee jerk reaction. That is fans being frustrated over a coach who could have Iowa at the top of the B1G if he could coach even average defense. Even in the 2nd half last night there were a ton of wide open shots for the Illini

ok, again 34-20 in the B1G over the last 3 seasons. I don't care how bad his defense was, that's a winning # and to want him gone after a 1-5 start to this year when you can see a hundred years of data to support the fact that no Iowa coach has really been able to avoid that type of year sans Lute seems knee jerk.

I feel pretty positively about Heller, Joey Woodey, Bond Shymansky, and Andrew Carter from what I have seen. Some others I am hopeful about, but the results have not yet been demonstrated.

agree 100% - I've stated on here a TON that he gets next season to get Iowa back firmly in the dance or he should be fired immediately after. With this roster no way in hell we make the dance next year

We'll have to look at what his Big Ten conference record is after this season. I'm curious as to why you cherry picked "the last 3 seasons"?

Agreed it's 2018-19 or bust for the Fran man.

Cause they are the last 3 seasons? The most recent years of basketball from our coach? Not quite what cherry pick means. I also include last year where Iowa’s season wasn’t great. I can’t really take this year into acct yet since there are more games to be played. That would be cherry picking
