I disagree, Iowa will be fine next season without Marble.
You seriously think so? A scenario that was playing out in my mind was Clemmons starting at the point with Gesell sliding over to the shooting guard spot. Then another scenario playing out in my mind was Oglesby starting next season at the 2. To me if either of those scenarios play out then Iowa really swung and missed on Jok, I think Jok is the only one with the abilities to come close to what Marble does offensively. But I doubt even Fran knows what is going to happen next fall, with his deep rotation there are a number of ways he could go with the starting lineup. Unless he develops a perimeter game I do not see Clemmons being anything more than a career backup at the point.
We will have some fun debating this stuff in the summer.
I hope you're right about reloading every year, because in my opinion we don't have a replacement for Marble or Basabe at this time, based on what they provide the team at this point. Not saying guys can't grow into that role, but I don't see our recruiting at a level (at this point) in which an immediate replacement will come in and the balance the production we are losing with our seniors. By no means am I saying that we don't have talent and shouldn't be excited about whats to come, but I definitely see us staying constant or taking a small step back next year.
If you're going to finish my sentence it would be "its not the end of the world because we will have another legit shot next year". Of course no one EXPECTED to win this year but a lot of people are hoping, and rightfully so. We still have a decent shot at it.
I expect Woody to take a HUGE step forward next year. He was a big time recruit, and with that I believe came unrealistic expectations. It just takes big men longer for their skills to catch up with their body.(see Les Jepsen, Jared Reiner, Erik Hansen etc.) Woody, is farther along at this point in his career than all three of the big men I listed. I have always thought we would not see his true potential until his Jr. year. Woody has the talent. He is physical, he plays pretty good D, and is one of the best passing big men I have seen at Iowa in a long time. He also has a chip on his shoulder and is not intimidated. These are all things that can not be taught. The rest will come. I do believe this.
That being said, we can't have him getting his dunks blocked by the rim any more.
I'll be very happy if we make the NCAA tourney, after what this program has endured since 2006. Anything above that will be frosting on the cake
Iowa is still athletically challenged. If the shooting is off, and if the team doesn't play as a team on offense, Iowa's offense has rough sledding... Still missing way too many free throws.
In the Meechegan game, how many times did I see a Hawk go down low just to be rejected?
What's with Marble, anyway? He tries some crazy shot (hoping to get the foul call, obviously) which leads to a breakout for the other team compounded with a numbers disadvantage because Marble is laying on the floor.
To be good, Iowa needs to recruit some athletes.
All right, name one athlete on Iowa's team that could matchup with Michigan.
The only way Iowa stopped Michigan's offense was with a zone. Side note, Iowa's athleticism is similar to Wisconsin's. Why doesn't Wisconsin play a zone defense?
Any Iowa athletes match up with Michigan's athletes? Maybe Woody. His size. And mobility.
