If we don't win the conference this year

The thought that really excites me is if White has turned the corner and starts playing like that THIS year, with Marble still on the team. If that happens we are going to finish really strong.

After reading his comments after the Michigan loss I expect to see a dominant Aaron White for the rest of the year. The 2 headed monster of him and Marble will open up a lot of oppurtunities for the other 3 guys on the floor.

We may not be as deep next year, but I think a team with White, Woody & Gabe at the 4-5, Jarod Jok & Josh at the 2-3, plus two good point guards We will be just fine. All these are going to keep getting better this year and next. Not only that they are learning how to win.

You seriously think so? A scenario that was playing out in my mind was Clemmons starting at the point with Gesell sliding over to the shooting guard spot. Then another scenario playing out in my mind was Oglesby starting next season at the 2. To me if either of those scenarios play out then Iowa really swung and missed on Jok, I think Jok is the only one with the abilities to come close to what Marble does offensively. But I doubt even Fran knows what is going to happen next fall, with his deep rotation there are a number of ways he could go with the starting lineup. Unless he develops a perimeter game I do not see Clemmons being anything more than a career backup at the point.

We will have some fun debating this stuff in the summer.

I have 2 thoughts on this. The first relates to spreading Marble's production. Even if Clemmons is the backup at point next year I think he will play more minutes and be more productive. He currently averages 3.4 PPG in all games. He should get 2 or 3 more shots per game and increase his scoring by 3 or 4 points just on playing time and shot volume. This will likely be true for Jok and Gesell as well...Ellingson if he's ready to contribute. I do agree that the most likely 1 to 1 replacement is Jok but there are other ways to distribute Marble's production.

My 2nd thought is that Clemmons has lost his confidence and playing time this year. Is it a sophomore slump? Is it the depth of the team? I don't know. I personally think Clemmons has a Big 10 body and athleticism and is going to be a major factor next year...most improved player on the team. I won't deny that I'm Clemmons fan and think he has major upside. He will come in with 2 years of experience and should be ready to take a huge step up...just my opinion.

I hope you're right about reloading every year, because in my opinion we don't have a replacement for Marble or Basabe at this time, based on what they provide the team at this point. Not saying guys can't grow into that role, but I don't see our recruiting at a level (at this point) in which an immediate replacement will come in and the balance the production we are losing with our seniors. By no means am I saying that we don't have talent and shouldn't be excited about whats to come, but I definitely see us staying constant or taking a small step back next year.

Basabe is having a huge year in all facets of the game...IMO. I worry about replacing him. However, I do think White and Uthoff can split his minutes, shots, etc. and make up for the offense. Uthoff should also take a big step up after playing a year of college hoops. I think Fran will push him to be 1 of the go to guys rather than a complimentary player in a supporting role.

If you're going to finish my sentence it would be "its not the end of the world because we will have another legit shot next year". Of course no one EXPECTED to win this year but a lot of people are hoping, and rightfully so. We still have a decent shot at it.

It's not out of the question to pick Iowa to win every remaining game on their schedule with the exception of the game at MSU. We should be favored in the others. We should be the better team OR have the home court advantage giving us the edge over a team like Michigan with comparable talent.

I think we will lose 2 more and MSU will lose a total of 3 or less...but it's been a crazy year. We're all afraid to trust the talent on our team because we're just not used to being 1 of the 2 or 3 best in the conference.

I expect Woody to take a HUGE step forward next year. He was a big time recruit, and with that I believe came unrealistic expectations. It just takes big men longer for their skills to catch up with their body.(see Les Jepsen, Jared Reiner, Erik Hansen etc.) Woody, is farther along at this point in his career than all three of the big men I listed. I have always thought we would not see his true potential until his Jr. year. Woody has the talent. He is physical, he plays pretty good D, and is one of the best passing big men I have seen at Iowa in a long time. He also has a chip on his shoulder and is not intimidated. These are all things that can not be taught. The rest will come. I do believe this.
That being said, we can't have him getting his dunks blocked by the rim any more.:D

I'll be very happy if we make the NCAA tourney, after what this program has endured since 2006. Anything above that will be frosting on the cake

He also has a high basketball IQ. See the foul call in the 2nd half of the Michigan game. He heard the whistle and came down hard on the arms to ensure no chance for a 3 point play. That's how all of the guys have to foul. Is there such a thing as "finishing" a foul.

Iowa is still athletically challenged. If the shooting is off, and if the team doesn't play as a team on offense, Iowa's offense has rough sledding... Still missing way too many free throws.
In the Meechegan game, how many times did I see a Hawk go down low just to be rejected?
What's with Marble, anyway? He tries some crazy shot (hoping to get the foul call, obviously) which leads to a breakout for the other team compounded with a numbers disadvantage for Iowa because Marble is laying on the floor.
To be good, Iowa needs to recruit some athletes.

I strongly suggest kicking that Lickliter tape out of the old VCR and watching the current Iowa team. We have athletes all over the court.

All right, name one athlete on Iowa's team that could matchup with Michigan.
The only way Iowa stopped Michigan's offense was with a zone. Side note, Iowa's athleticism is similar to Wisconsin's. Why doesn't Wisconsin play a zone defense?

Has Wisconsin ever played a zone with Bo Ryan as their coach?

Do you even watch sports?

Maybe Ryan hasn't ever watched sports. Seems like a no-brainer call for a coach with Wisky's athletes to make. -Zone defense, I mean.

What happened to Basabe in the second half of the Michigan game? They did ignore his outside shot, didn't they? And Basabe never thought to put up an outside shot. Why?
