Greg Garmon vs. Barkley Hill

at the goal line you dont need a big bruiser. last rb that i remember with a nose for the goal was wegher...he just jumped the line.

speed backs and power backs and combo backs all work in the zone scheme as iowa has shown what you need is patience and quick burst.

greene had it all so he is what we compare everyone to now. hampton looked like a faster less physical version of greene. both had lots of patience. arob was great at patience but lacked some quickness and took a lot of hits befor los. wegher lacked patience but maybe the quickest rb we have had. coker became used patience to a fault and was too much so. in fact it seemed in his second yr to hurt his quickness which was already low.

garmon looks to be a wegher with more patience but not quite the athleticism. obviously he shouldnt be as high mantinance as wegher.

hill is a quicker more athletic version of arob. in fact he was a bigger workhorse in hs than arob so he knows what it takes.

to me as long as each shows patience in the zone they will be a great duo. i see more combined yds than arob and wegher and a tandem that sticks more than 1 yr. we just need someone to have a nose for the zone like wegher and i think davis will find a way to keep the rbs happy as they seem to have more playmakers there than any other position. albeit unexperienced playmakers.

Just think it's impossible, right now to predict which of these guys comes to the forefront in 2012. Right now, Bullock and DJ Johnson have the advantage of being in the system. I think the coaches like Bullock a lot, because he can catch the ball out of backfield. Either one, Barkley Hill, or Greg Garmon could play a significant amount of football, this fall for the Hawkeyes. I hope they settle on one of the true freshman for PT, early, so the other guy can take a RS year.

Go Hawks

Barkley Hill is going to play. He's at 215 pounds right now and he's said he hasn't lost any speed with the additional 15 pounds. He looks the part already and he has that natural feel for where the hole is and unlike Arob, is quicker getting there. He's going to love the zone scheme.

He's my pick to surprise at RB...he's going to be very very good.

Hill's senior year stats are absolutely ridiculous something like 2,500 yards and 40 td's is just crazy. And it wasn't like he was playing 8 man or something he played 4a. Dont know who much that translates but it cant be a bad thing.

Those are ridiculous stats. I can't wait to see how this goes in the season. I personally hope its going to be a wegher robinson team up with 1000 yards for each lol!

whatever happens...for god sakes don't pick one guy and run him to death. Use your talent.

Ha, no kidding. Spread the ball around and give everyone some touches in the first few games. Goodness knows we'll be needing them all by the time the season is over.

I think we can all agree that the day and age of one running back is over and done. My guess will be Bullock and Hill, with Garmon maybe being a candidate for a red shirt, unless something happens to B or H. I would not be terribly surprised to see Iowa use all three, with the #3 back being used sparingly and mostly early in the year. I just don't see Rogers spending much time as running back, though he could be used from the FB position as a change up. Just MHO.

I'm going with DeAndre Johnson than company. I'm betting well roll with Johnson, Bullock, & Garmon.

I would love to see Hill but Johnson has a similar style to him. Unless Johnson & Rodgers (who is a FB but I think we'll use as a power back sometimes) gets hurt I expect a redshirt.

Right On!

I feel this program is at a crossroads. Will KF improve as a game day coach? Will we still see the same tendencies of poor clock management, a conservative style - play not to lose instead of win approach, very little creativity - getting stuck on one running back, etc.?

I am hoping the new blood on the staff will translate to a more aggressive approach. If nothing else we will be able to answer the age-old question, "Was it KOK's fault for those average to below-average offenses or KF's"?

I believe we will definitely see a step up in the quality of recruits. I hope KF turns them loose and lets them play.

It is a zone blocking scheme, so I vote for the guy with the ability to find the cut back lanes. If Greg Davis truly adds west coast principles to this offense I am predicting Brad Rogers will have a good year from the fullback position.

It sure would help things if Ferentz the Younger can bring back the Bullies of the B10.

The offense runs through the tight ends this year. I hope one of these young running backs can keep up.

.

I tend to agree. If the new blood and younger coaches don't put a little zip back into things... KFz is done. Or rather...we are, and it's gonna be 7-5ish til he retires.

Greg Davis, Brian Ferentz, LaVar Woods... can have a great positive impact on this team, if they're given the freedom to do their thing. I'm excited to see how things develop.

Im curious as to why people think Hill will be better than Garmon. Garmon is a consensus 4 star who was recruited by numerous big schools and has really good speed. Hill almost didn't get an Iowa offer, and probably wouldn't have if Coker was still here. He is a two star on some services. Until I see something different on the field I will go with Garmon playing over Hill.

Have you looked at the two tapes (not these, do a little digging for a better Barkley Hill reel)? Garmon is on the skinny side, doesn't get his pad level down, and rarely breaks tackles. Hill looks almost exactly like Brandon Wegher did in his senior film. Pad level down, grinding out extra yards, and with excellent burst in the open field. He looks like he could play tomorrow. Garmon, not so much.

Don't let recruiting services tell you how to think, David. You have a brain and a gut. Use them.
