Fred Hoiberg to UCLA

Alford isn't the greatest basketball coach, but give the guy some credit. He is a family man that hasn't traded his wife in for a younger model. He has three kids, and seems to be a devoted father. The guy probably is through at UCLA, but he is loaded and I hope the best for him in the future. The guy isn't perfect, but he seems to be a guy that tries to live his life in the right way.

Where's my 3 million $$$ and Div 1 coaching gig, then??!

Yes, very calculating, like most high level head coaches today. Agents, $$$, highly sought group of "winners" creates a brew of charlatans who are savvy about how to "win" and know how to play the "game." Many ADs wear blinders or are clueless.
Just saw he got fired. Lost by 15 to Liberty.. Wonder where he'll pop up again

????? I could be very wrong but I seem to remember reports of him having an affair with his secretary at Iowa. You like him and thats fine but I think he's a scum bag and I'm not alone.

Agree. The guy has always had a sense of entitlement to a degree. I think more when he was younger going up the ranks and I think he's been humbled a little bit the last two gigs. But, when at Iowa don't forget the lawn mower situation where he just thought he deserved a free lawn mower and wouldn't pay the local small business owner. There are other situations where he just thought he was deserving of perks because "Well, I am Steve Alford". Then being a douche bag in the athletic dept. or to subordinate staff. It was that kind of shit that turned people off.

Clearly trolling. There cant; be any Alford apologist left can there?

Another thing not directly basketball related. Supposedly, CHA quit having major rock concerts when Alford complained about losing practice time, or some such nonsense. May just be a rumor, but I don't think CHA has been on the concert circuit since then.

That argument works for Quinn Synder. I don't think it quite works for Alford. His ego is the problem, if or when he can check that then your argument applies.

The Fraud didn't dump his first wife for two reasons. He didn't want to give up half his wealth in a divorce, and with a wife, he could always tell his side pieces I cant marry you until I get a divorce from my wife, and it wasn't his fault they were too dumb to figure out that was never going to happen. Win/win.

I figured Alford was done so I just thought I'd try and find something nice to say about Alford. I don't know the guy. Maybe subconsciously I was just trying to get a rise out of some people.

His idea of the right way is to play the faith card every time he's questionend, whether it was his recent coaching acumen or his handling of the Pierre Pierce situation almost fifteen years ago. It's almost never sincere, almost never a good look, and when duly executed the nicest thing you can say of that type of person is "smug".

Remember when he tried to organize a "prayer group" for the victim of the Pierce crime, among other things? It was enough to make a person vomit. Add the way he treated anyone in town from his assistant coaches to CHA personnel to restaurant staff, the stories of his occasional forays into places a "devoted father" shouldn't have been?

Look up the term "narcissistic" in the dictionary and you will see the picture of a recently terminated coach laughing his way to the bank.

The only thing I really know about Alford is he isn't a great coach, and what I've heard second or third hand, but I can believe he isn't crying his way to the bank. There probably isn't any of these pampered division one coaches that are crying their way to the bank. Anyway, how good or bad Alford is, he is just some guy that wouldn't really care if he met me or not. I hope the best for anyone in a decent sort of way.

You know what is wierd? There was a time when he came off as a decent sort of person. He wrote an autobiography "Playing for Knight" just before or just as his coaching career started at D-3 Manchester College in Indiana. There isn't a hint of smugness in the whole book, not a hint of narcissism. He seemed legitimately appreciative of what he had accomplished up to that time and the breaks that had gone his way. For example, he didn't take one moment of his Olympic experience for granted. He was content, down the stretch in the 1987 National Championship game, to draw the defense away from Keith Smart and let Smart be the hero. The book overall had a humble tone to it that he has rarely exhibited since. It would have been written around 1990, a long time ago, but it shows that he did have that side to him, once upon a time.

He could've been a lot better with the Pierre Pierce incident. A lot better. Coaches talking about their faith or their family publicly doesn't make them good people.

See: politicians.

I don't think the PIerce incident has anything to do with the student body not returning. Most of them don't even know who Alford and Pierre are. The student body doesn't go because their seats are garbage and they'd rather sit home and watch the game on their TV. Make it interesting and fun for the students, and they'll go.

+1 This same reason the football games aren't attended any longer relative to when they had the 20 yards line to the end zone vs horrendous end zone tickets

Yeah...I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that he had a lot of help in crafting the proper message for that book. I've met the man and I can tell you what you posted above, doesn't ring true to me. I've got a healthy ego when it comes to competition and I'll be the 1st one to admit it. I can talk some trash too. I can admit that. Knowing who I am makes it easy for me to accept other competitors and their egos. I can get along just fine with other alphas and their egos. Steve Alford is exceedingly selfish and entitled, to go with his competitive ego. That's what makes him a terrible person and a mediocre coach.
