Fran's recruiting

When I say talent I mean top 100 talent not just your run of the mill recruit. Out of state 4 stars - Iowa state 5 (with a very realistic chance of adding a 5 star this class) - Iowa 0.

With all that talent I'd say Iowa State has extremely underperformed. They should have at least made a couple Final Fours and a national title. Their coach is a great manager of other coaches recruits but obviously can't do crap with talent when it comes to coaching. Pathetic.

Morris and Thomas have played one game.

Custer and McKay haven't played any.

So, yeah, I suppose it is hard to coach these guys to the Final Four just yet, but your confidence is appreciated!

I was including Transfer U graduates as well - Clyburn, White, Luscious, etc. Considering ALL these guys Hoiberg's had they greatly underperformed. No championships and not even a Sweet 16 appearance.

Guess we just have to settle for those crappy NCAA tourney berths. Dang. Things just aren't working out in our MBB program, with the potential of a third straight berth, a load of young talent, and one of the hottest coaches in CBB.

After reading the responses to a very legitimate thread by the OP, I now understand why Iowa voted for the clown in the WH twice. For those who have yet to grasp that this is a fan message board, let me spell it out: This is a fan message board. People are entitled to their opinions. If you don't like it, don't read it or say "Hey, I think we are OK with our recruiting because of .......'. That is what, in a free country, is a referred to as dialogue. You authoritarian types who never man up and post anything, but lay in the weeds to snipe at everyone who does are pathetic. You want a monologue where you blast everyone for everything to get some satisfaction over showing off your PhD in Toolology. If the goons on this board would quit with their Einsteinesque posts about 'We really need another one of these posts' or "I am sure Fran is reading this post right now' there might actually be interesting dialogue between non zombies. Seriously, do you guys really have no life outside of ripping people for their opinions on a fan message board?

We lost to the eventual national champion 2 years ago and were a should have been block call away from the sweet 16 last season. It's not like we have just been bowing out in the first 2nd round or playing in the NIT hehe. I'm pretty satisfied with how the teams have looked to end the year. If he keeps this up sweet 16s elite 8s ect will come.

We're all just waiting for Fran to get them Harrison Barnes juco types, Ted.

Nice try. Who you trying to convince, Yourself?

You should've never lost those games, not with the talent Iowa State has had. Poor coaching. Any good coach could do better than what Hoiberg has done with that talent. Fran could, no question. He's had nothing to work with but a bunch of zero star unathletic white guys yet has improved 7 wins every season. Fran is a great player developer as well. Fran would do wonders with Hoiberg's roster.

ha ha, , a subtle but effective comments Fran's recruiting thus far. Nice way to poke at ISU fan's but still stay within topic of thread title. Well done sir:cool:

No doubt Fred made some mistakes, but he took over as bad a dumpster fire as Fran and has done pretty well. Iowa should have been in the NCAA's last year a couple of tough loss in the Big Ten kept them out.

One thing I am not worried about at this point is Fran's recruiting and/or ability to judge underrated talent. I believe White was a 2* (3 at best) depending on which service you look at, and he was all Big 10 last year (3rd team, granted). And despite not having a lot of big time recruits so far, Fran still had us on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament last year.

I'm just not worried.

Now if a couple years go by and we are not progressing from where we are now, then yeah, I will start to become more critical of the recruiting, but I have seen nothing so far that makes me think Fran can't evaluate talent and won't be able to get some better recruits if (or when) Iowa starts making NCAA Tournaments.

Nobody wants to hear this, but we also have to keep in mind where this program was just a couple years ago, and that "Iowa" is still not a household name outside of the state's borders. Iowa has to earn a reputation for being a good basketball program, and the only way to do that is to start making the tournament on a fairly regular basis, and preferably make a Sweet 16 or beyond here and there. At this point, 2006 remains the last time Iowa was in the NCAA Tournament. NIT's won't cut it.

Ok, here is the deal. Signing a 4* guarentees you nothing. Signing a top 125 kids does the same. I'll take a White and Marble, over a top 125 kid in Ogelsby any day.

I realize that getting top 100 kids increases the chances of them performing to that level, but what we need is a kid from each class to PLAY and PERFORM like a 4*, not necessarily be a 4*. IE we have Marble in our SR class that is that kid. We have White in the JR class that is that kid (not the top 125 Ogelsby BTW). We have Gesell, Woody, and Uthoff in our So. class. We have Jok in our FR who I think will be someone who performs like a White and Marble. I am a bit worried about this class as I don't think Ellingson is a 4* type performer, but maybe Uhl is, he had a lot of good offers.

2015 will be a huge class for Fran though. That is the year he need to make his mark recruiting, and bring in a couple top 75 kids. That would put them on campus when Gesell, Woody, and Uthoff are SR. and give them an opportunity to get their feet wet, without having to carry the team.

One 4* performance player per graduating class isn't going to win you conference championships in the Big 10, or pretty much any major bball conference.

Hopefully when they're juniors they will still have all the seniors to support them. As far as when they're seniors, I'm not to worried that they haven't filled the class that comes in in 2 years.

Yes but if Iowa is going to compete for conference titles, they can't have two year gaps in getting great players.

You are right. Only ISU fans think Fred is a good coach.

Ripping on Iowa's roster in a thread about Fran's poor recruiting is ironic.

You're trolling the wrong board.

I am a big Fran fan, but it is hard to ignore the top talent that is flooding to virtually every Big Ten school besides Iowa....that puts tremendous pressure on Fran to have a huge recruiting class in 2015, a year with less top talent in the Midwest. I think he is a great evaluator, but has yet to really overcome our stink to land the top guys he identifies. I think he is completely honest, and not the used car salesman that some of these other coaches in the league are. Fans think I am jumping the gun, but unless you are a Kentucky, this business is always about re-stocking the cupboard, year after year, and not having a gap of empty classes. Momentum is a precious commodity in this business for programs like Iowa, and if you falter on the recruiting trail for a year, and then two...you become yesterdays news. We have good momentum until this recruiting (2014) class...another year will become an issue. If you are not getting more talented every year, you are losing ground.
