Embarassing. This is freaking Illinois.

But why is he so conservative when we are underdogs and outmanned? That is exactly the time you need to take a few chances. He rarely does.

This is the frustrating part of his philosophy. Just line up and play. Every single game. Very little creativity. Again today's color commentator quoted the opposing coach (which happens during every telecast). "Iowa is not going to surprise you...".

So I am sure Lovie and his staff were a little surprised today. I hope we keep surprising future coaches with even more uncharacteristic calls.

And IMO the new special teams coach has been a huge upgrade.

Complaints about KF being too conservative has been the hater cries.

Now he does it and the complaint is it's against bums.

There have been many who have complained about the conservative play calling including myself and I was happy with what I saw.

Don't let one clown comment destroy a good complaint.

Because you got lots of people who just can't deal with the ups and downs, highs and lows of sports. They are built for instant gratifications, and if things aren't going well for a half, they fold their tent and act like the game is over.

It’s probably because we accept mediocre football

Last week: it’s crazy Iowa is favored by 20.
This week: Iowa wins by 29 and the same guys are saying that Iowa should have looked better doing it.

Not only that, they also said no way we could cover the 20, and then when we do cover the 20, we were lucky to do so. Or when we beat ISU we were lucky to do so, or when we almost beat Penn St., we were lucky to do so.

Just how "lucky" is this team?

Michigan State straight up stole a ton of ammo from these so called Hawkeye fans, ISU snagged some too.

I would tend to agree re: 2nd half domination. Even after the pick 6, they still came right back and scored a FG, making it a one score game. Granted, we would have gotten more offense if we didn't have the pick 6, but by my count we ran 11 plays for 50 yards in the 3rd quarter (2.5 possessions...3rd possession started in the 3rd and finished in the 4th with MVB's TD catch). Illinois ran 20 plays for 109 yards and got a FG. So I would say that the game was still very much in doubt in that 3rd quarter. But we made enough big plays in the passing game to put the game out of reach in the 4th.

This is correct, it was still a game by the end of the 3rd but at least the defense had buttoned up and stopped giving up big plays.

At least the end is all that matters. Tough--next man in. Go Hawks!!! Need better starts.

Maybe the slow starts are because of BFerentz's inexperience and not knowing enough on where to attack early in games. Just spit balling here. Posters here have made some interesting observations about the offense, how passing from under center is going against our tendencies, and Podolak mentioned in the 3rd qtr how the hawks passed on 10 of 11 plays. The 3rd qtr was not great offensively but I think all those passes backed off the Illini opening up some running room and BF found some passes that would work. Hope this can be done from the first snap of games.

And it was no surprise that MSU and other teams like Illinois chew up our defense early in games. I and friends expect opponents to move the ball early in games. I cant count the number of times Norm's defense would give up a couple early scores before they could adjust and take the away the opponents best plays.

Wouldn't it be neat to see our base defense come out with a 5 man front look once in awhile where whoever has the tight end is up on the LOS in the face of the tight end or do we have the 2 cornerbacks who are good enough to play man to man most plays while the other 9 pressure the LOS (like old MSU, Mich, Alabama etc). I am not saying play the whole game like this but it can mess up the other team's planning.

I thought it was a good win. The first half was the Iowa that we have been most of the season and the second half was more like what we should be. The lack of pressure against a line of freshman is what has me most concerned.

And Parker Hesse gives a video interview on DSM HawkCentral about the lack of pressure on the passer.

Not as "lucky" as that '15 squad....oh wait that was all do to the easiest schedule ever, my bad.
