Early look at next years football schedule..............

what games do you think will be really great games. I really believe we beat we NIU in the opener and have a better season than most expect.

It depends on the definition of good. HF's 1st team was 5-6 and it was a pretty decent team with a hard schedule. Many experts said at the end of the season that Iowa was a top 25 team.

Take that to next years schedule, it is not crazy to see a winning season and maybe 8 wins....and still be maddening not very good. MSU...on the down. MN, not know. NIU, not known. Purdue not known. UM, maybe not as good. IU, really not know.

Still expect poor play calling. Bad time management. Losing a game or two because of lack of effort. Seeing the "tired Iowa defense", give up amazing yards in the 4th.

Depends on your expectations. Bad could still be 8-4.

Better hope for a low bowl against a bad team that also doesn't care.

What games do you think will be really great games. I really believe we beat we NIU in the opener and have a better season than most expect. Our O Line should be very good and I expect our Offense to be much better based on a strong running game and nice PA passing.

I think the NIU game will be a close win. I think we beat ISU, and I think we upset Michigan to make it to a News Year Day bowl next year. I might still be drunk from a wild New Years but I think we get a solid running game from Wiesmann and Bullock next year and the passing game can't get worse. The D Line is another year improved and we win some games on the foot of our kicker late instead of the way it went this year.

So I think they will be 5-7 next season and depending on how the offense and defense look going into '14 depends on the level of meltdown on this board. I understand what you are saying, but 8-9 wins? The schedule is tougher this year and you still got ferentz as your coach. Highly improbable I'd say. But I doubt they only win 2-3 either. 4-6 wins is what I'm picking.

It appears the days are finally over where people would automatically lock ISU and Northwestern down as wins.

Yes, I believe he sued the Dr. that botched the surgery. Seriously.

I have no idea what Mangino is up to, but that guy needs to be somewhere. Great coach. I would do a back flip if he became Iowa's OC.
 
Ok, I've effectively used hypnosis to remove the images of the 2012 season from my mind. I now only remember the Minnesota and MSU games. Now that I can look at 2013 without that feeling of dread everytime our offense faced 2nd or 3rd and long...I'm feeling pretty good about 2013.

Offense - We return a bevy of physical and talented offensive linemen. If Scherff and Donnal return in good form, this unit has the potential to be one of the best ever at Iowa. We will also be deep and better prepare for the injuries that no doubt will occur. We are now deeper at running back...more so than any year I can remember. Bullock, Canzeri, Weisman plus the redshirts Malloy and Hill, and you get the feeling we are going to be ok even if you know who shows up in 2013. Our TE's should be a major strength...and we are deep there too. QB is the major question mark, but we won't need Johnny Football to show up...just someone who can manage the game and make the right reads. Our running game is going to help a ton as not one team on our schedule will be able to shut it down without additional men in the box. WR is another question mark, but at least we have some additional options now...with Smith (got some experience), Cotton (could make another leap), and KMM as the possession guy. We obviously need one or two of the RS freshmen to step up...and it's about time they do. Taking all this into account and forgetting the images of 2012, there are solid reasons our offense is going to be much better. Let's face it...our QB and WR were terrible last year in the consistency department. We can only go up in those two areas.

Defense - Going into 2012, we knew we had issues in the DL. Well, we still have issues, but they are less than last year. Alvis gets his legs back and will be very good. Darian Cooper is going to be very good as he really came on late last year. He has the potential to be the next great DL in my opinion. Another year of strength and conditioning and he breaks through even further. We need two other guys to step up. LTP should be solid at the other DT and well Carl Davis will take up space. There is no doubt we need the light to come on for a few people. Ott, McMinn, Spears, J. Johnson, Faith E are the most likely candidates. Regardless, there is no doubt we will be better on the DL. We return three Sr. LB's. Enough said. We return two DB's that have significant experience...and Law seemed to get it at the end of the year. We will be much better defensively and aside from a few games last year, this defense was a big surprise. It's not a stretch to say this defense is much, much better athletically than last year.

If we get by NIU, no easy task, we are 5-0. The rest of the schedule is a crap shoot and QB play will be the difference in 2-5 or say 4-3 in the last 7 games. The foundation is there and we are solid where you need to be solid...in the trenches. We have alot less holes or unknowns going into 2013 than we did in 2012. I'm optimistic.

Last week I thought 6-7. This week, I'm a little more optimistic: 8 wins. Next week, who knows. I think we're going to be on the cusp of a great season. I see a lot of games that could go either way. I DO feel this team will be greatly improved from last year.
