Dayton vs. Illinois (in case you want to see Gregory)

Gregory has a top flight PG out of Oak Hill in the class coming in.
He is also recruiting Trey McDonald out of Battle Creek (the same Trey McDonald that Iowa has also offered).

Iowa also offered Harrison Barnes, what is your point about Iowa offering McDonald? To show what type of kids Lick was recruiting or to say if Gregory did become Iowa's coach that maybe McDonald would come as well?

Beware, my Hawk friends. I've followed Dayton all year long. They have a hard time finishing the job. This one isn't over by any stretch. If you watched that last minute, they can lose some serious focus.

The fact that McDonald is familiar with both Gregory and Iowa. Not a reason to hire a coach, just talking about recruits.

Providence, Wichita State, Utah, etc... are all sitting at home just like Iowa. At least Dayton is still playing ball... better than some of the other coaches being named.

i will give you that.

but not like our boys Bruce or #1a Scott Drew.

i think cyclone said this in another one and i liked it about him.

Quote:
Gregory took over a VERY talented team when he got to Dayton. Oliver Purnell had them loaded and fresh off an NCAA tournament team. Brian took them to the NCAA the first year with Purnell's players and lost in the 1st round. Since?.......

Has only made the NCAA tournament once in 6 years.
Finished 7th or worse in the A10 4 out of those 6 years.
Starts semi hot and fades every single year

Have never been impressed by him when watching Dayton.

Also a lot of people rate Dayton as a top 5 basketball town in the country. I have been to a couple games there and they love their bball. Anyways Gregory can recruit some of the really great talents out of Ohio and he has. Problem is that he doesn't do anything with those great classes. Know imagine him at Iowa where the talent isn't as deep in the state and the conference is better. Just don't see him doing well

Many posters want to use the "let's not judge jacobson" on one game after he beat Kansas argument.

Can this same argument be used for Gregory.

He plays up tempo and is beating Illinois in the NIT.

I don't buy the uptempo argument anyways.... I'd like to see him play uptempo with our roster and lack of athleticism.

That's a better description of what the ESPN color guy was saying about them Monday night.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around seeing Iowa get into it's offense before the 25 second mark of the shot clock.

Im not gonna lie, I was not to impressed when I heard this guys name, but I like what I see from his team so far tonight, athletic, play hard, get up and down the court, who would hawkeyenation rather have Gregory or Forbes, if it came down to those 2? It sure wouldnt hurt if he could bring that top flight point guard to Iowa with him ;)

nice game they are having but it is only one game, fact remains.. they are underachievers...

No doubt I would like to have this Dayton team in an Iowa uni to watch. They are sooo deep. ( guys had scored in the first 8 minutes. Iowa was lucky if we had scored 9 pts in the first 9 minutes.

I love the style of ball, but you have to have 10-12 athletes to run it. Can he get that many to Iowa?
Gregory has some nice history...Glenbrook North, to the Pistons with Doug Collins,MSU with Izzo...so he should be able to tread the chicago recruiting hotbeds.
The Simeon player who is committed to Dayton, Brandon Spearmon, led Simeon to the state title...and the Oak Hill player is solid also...top 60. They are the kinds of athletes that can play this style. If he came, he should bring them.

That said, the transition would be rough. Frankly, I think only Cole, May and Fuller really fit this style, and maybe larson and Marble. One drawback to having a full roster next year at Iowa is that we only have one scholly to give this year and one next year,so transforming a roster into this frenetic style would be rough.

I like the pace tho, so I guess we suffer thru it til he could get more athletes.

JHHawk - I actually should give you a lot of credit. When we were talking about Chicago recruits last month, you brought up Gregory and said something to effect that he's be a great get for a program. You were dead on. Props.

God. Must be nice to be able to sub 4-5 guys at a time. When is the last time we had any depth like that?
