I would agree with an 8, maybe 7 due to the offensive troubles for the better part of his tenure (basically outside of 2001, 2002, 2005, and the first 1/2 of 2010 its been a struggle) and not addressing it earlier.
I think both the KF haters & minions cherry pick far too much. The haters cite post 2005, the minions rely heavily on 2002-2004 & 2009. IMO he's not nearly as bad as the haters think but not as good as the minions think either.
Here's some non-cherry picking numbers:
100-74 Kirks overall record at Iowa .570 winning percentage
59-52 Kirk's overall B10 record at Iowa .520 winning percentage
These numbers show exactly what Kirk Ferentz is. A solid coach who wins a little bit more than he loses.
At a program with less resources than Iowa, I think that his win/loss margin decreases. At a program with more resources, it increases. Similar to what would happen with other solid football coaches across the college football landscape.

And the 2004 Iowa team would have been a good candidate for a BCS Bowl under the current system.
And a 1-1 record in BCS level games trumps 0-3 IMO.

No. Just laying out all the program has accomplished during KF's tenure.
Cherry picking would have been saying he had a 31-7 record between 2002 and 2004.
Cherry picking would have been saying Iowa won 22 straight at home between 2002 and 2005 under KF.
Cherry pkcing would have been saying Iowa had 3 consecutive finishes at #8 in the final poll of the season under KF.

- Finished in AP top 25 ten (10) times.
- 14 bowl games (3 Rose Bowls): 6-7-1 record.
- Record at Iowa: 143-89-6.
- Five (5) losing records in 20 seasons.
Ferentz 14 seasons:
- Finished AP top 25 five (5) times. KF would need to finish in AP top 25 5 of the next 6 seasons to tie Fry.
- 10 bowl games (no Rose Bowls but 2002 Orange Bowl would have been Rose Bowl): 6-4.
- Record at Iowa: 100-74.
- Four losing records in 14 seasons.

Why is it that Kirk cant beat the worst teams in the country then? How does that make him even an average coach?
There is no cherry picking the results since Norm went ill and then retired.
Kirk has leaned on Norm the whole time he was here. When the Hawks need offense most of time they dont get it. Thats how you lose to Western Michigan , CMU and Minnesota. Kirk is a OL coach at best. He is not suited to make games calls and or to have any say what so ever on how an offense should run.
For those of you who wonder is kirk losing it. No. He never had it. He had Norm who had amazing defenses and a couple of years where he had unstoppable offensive players. So if kirk can bring back a healthy Norm and get Banks and Greene type players then maybe he can turn the program around. He still wont beat ISU very often but thats really tough isnt it Kirk?

Didnt Iowa score around 24 or so each loss to the Gophs in TCF?
Surely you cant lay all the blame at the feet of the offense and not give any to the defense.

OHHHHHHH Yes I can. Kirk tightens at the end of every game and most of the 2nd half for that matter. Kirk puts the ball on the ground at the end of every game hoping that the defense scores because the other team loses the game.
Norm not only had defenses that could beat any offense in country he also had to beat Kirk leaving his defense on the field for most of the game because kirk ran the ball into the ground because he was scared. We dont have that defense anymore.
Good defense are usually good because they get off the field and get to rest. Norms defenses had a 1 min break and they had to be back at it.
Both games you refer to the defense was left on the field to win it. When Kirk wouldnt try to win it with his offense.

I can think of plenty of games that the D didnt go enough to win, the Norm era included.

Was it because they were on the field 3/4 of the game? Although you are right the only way to win under kirk is for the defense to do it.

I said before that they played 4 good teames in 2012. The rest were either average or bad. Yes, I consider Isu's 2012 a bad team. And you can't put MAC teams on the same level with a BCS conference team.

Which is why, IMO, it seems that Kirk is putting all his eggs in Davis' basket hoping that CGD can bring in the type of offensive playmakers that have made kirk sucessful in the past on a more regular basis.
What do you think a HC is supposed to do? They surround themselves with good people, just like any other good leader in any other situation. Whether it be politics, business, the military, or sports. He did a nice job of hiring assistant coaches, which is near the top of the list for a HC. He did a bad job of waiting too long to make some changes, and now we will see if he can do it again. Who hired Norm?
