BTN at Iowa Open Practice

Sounds to me that the QB race that seemed close to being settled a few days ago all of the sudden looks more convoluted.

Where were you hearing this? Pay boards?

I think you and I were thinking the same that KF would name Rudock the starter in his short presser after Kids Day.

I now think you see Rudock and Beathard split snaps the first 2 games. No telling what will happen in Ames.

I thought LTP was Iowa's best defensive lineman last year.

I would agree with that, or at least the most consistent until the end of the season. I think he was pretty banged up.

As to the size of Cooper and Pasat. I have been lucky enough to attend media day every year for the last 8 or 9 years. I help a friend get extra interviews. From the naked eye Pasat is a little taller, but Cooper is thicker. The entire DL is noticeably bigger this year. The two guys who looked to have put on the most weight at the position were Ott and McMinn(I actually didn't get to see Ott last year since he was a first year player), but Drew looks like a college DE now. He was noticeably smaller than he needed to be on the field.

Just from piecing together things. Kirk said back before camp started he wanted his starter named by the time they were two weeks out. Then today Kirk told Revsine he intends to let the QB situation play out longer. There is no reason to stretch it out unless one of two things is happening. One, Rudock was pulling away but is now falling back with the others or two, one of the others is catching up fast to Rudock.

It would be very strange for the youngest of the three to be the starter. The other two guys would be so ticked off. Not sure if that would be good for team morale. Maybe it would be good. Don't know.

BTN Camp Tour 2013 #Hawkeyes As you would expect a better team than spring practice that will play 2 its strengths beginning with the O Line

Dave Revsine@BTNDaveRevsine12m
Talked w Mark Weisman & Anthony Hitchens - both emphasized need for consistency. Makes you think that msg may be coming from front of room.

Dave Revsine@BTNDaveRevsine11m
Greg Davis talked a lot about need for big plays. Said he has emphasized to QB's to take a shot down the field when opportunity is there

BTN Camp Tour 2013 #Hawkeyes O line strong, RB depth now stable, WR enough talent to find explosives - QB making plays continues to be ?

Dave Revsine@BTNDaveRevsine9m
Phil Parker talked about some of the younger guys who have stood out on D - Jordan Lomax, Jaleel Johnson, Drew Ott and Carl Davis.

BTN Camp Tour 2013 #Hawkeyes Defense in same spot as offense - solid in the box but need to be able to stop explosives with the back end

Iowa will likely be in every gm thanks to "D" - need to figure out a way to win close ones - have lost 12 of last 17 decided by 7 or less

Dave Revsine@BTNDaveRevsine7m
Common theme - O and D need to find playmakers. #Iowa last B1G in 40+ yd passes, TFL's & sacks LY.Key to season is whether playmakers emerge

BTN Camp Tour 2013 #Hawkeyes Tough sch but 1st 5 give team chance 2 develop & gain some momentum. KF teams usually develop during season

BTN Camp Tour 2013 #Hawkeyes L. Daniels could be in the mix early at RB, T. Smith will come on at WR, D. Powell contributes right away at WR

I don't think coaches make decisions based on "team morale" in the manner in which you were implying here. Either they are good enough to win the starting spot or they are not. If they can't handle it or feel it would be better to leave and play elsewhere, then most likely they will transfer. No matter what it is up to the individual to prove himself or move on. I would think an upperclassmen being upset over losing the starting position to an underclassmen is actually worse for morale than what you implied.

I do too, but you can't blame him for being ticked and it's that type of angst that the youngest guy that won the qb battle would be around all season long. Won't be good for anybody. That said, start the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

At MSU, Dantonio had said it was a two man battle for QB, and he would like to select the starter with two weeks to practice. Then, yesterday, after a scrimmage, he opened it up to 4 guys including a true frosh....so MSU is in the same boat. I have been a Beathard fan since the spring game, along with Sokol. I think it is clear that CJ is coming fast on Jake....love it. I am fine with 2 or even all 3 getting snaps in the first two weeks....then for ISU, hopefully we have a guy,or two.

I think that the team would recognize that the upperclassmen's angst is on himself, no one else especially not the underclassman who out performed him. Those type of players usually aren't well liked nor to teammates want them around.

Yea the last few games of the year are what are fresher on my mind more then anything I suppose and I seem to remember him getting pushed around alot. Also now that I was reminded of him playing nicked up I do remember hearing that too. I'll let up on my critique of his play last yr. That said I was still thinking Cooper would have made the jump to be a great player. My hopes are more up for him then down on LTP

I get the feeling that Sokol has fallen off, maybe even behind the true freshman to #4. I don't have any reason for this, just a gut feeling.

The Dline is not that good. I saw them with my own eyes the other day and Meier, Jaleel, and Faith made exactly ZERO impact.

The players are pretty much concerned with their own situation but do notice when someone clearly doesnt get a fair shake. They are pretty much on a need to know basis as far as coaching decsions. They can have a opinion as long as they keep it to themselves
