Not to make you feel bad...we are both banksters!

I was mostly with you on Millennials....until significant others got involved. Frankly it's like dealing with Princesses who will cut parent in laws out of their life with any slight reason that makes discomfort. Never saw this attitude coming.
Hah yeah I noticed :) Ag lending I assume?

I don't want to start some big argument but just to get some ideas from people.

What does everyone consider to be a 'livable wage' as politicians and govt planners call it for: (and let's say in the Midwest in areas with average cost of living, not downtown Chicago skyrise)

A single person with no kids?

The so called married with 2 kids standard family?

This in my opinion would be comfortable living.

Single No kids Midwest say $30,000

Married with 2 Kids: $70,000

I'd say something like this too with some safety nets to cover medical debt, as that can wipe out a families finances pretty quick. I had a $400,000 bill from UIHC when my first child was born 5 weeks premature, and he didn't even require a lot of care, needed a ventilator for about 14 hours and was just small. He needed to stay until he hit the 5 lb mark which ended up being about 6 weeks. I can't imagine the bills of some of the other families in there, we got lucky IMO.

Access to good affordable education or trade school would be nice too.

I am about at those amounts also. A single person is going to pay about $1000 for a decent apartment and as someone said renting now is just sky high. About $250 a month for a decent car or they can go with an older car.

Then you have probably $500 for groceries, gasoline, heat and cooling, water bill, basic internet etc. I mean that is nearly eating up all their take monthly take home. Hard to save on that but it is just that a barely livable wage.

And what bothers me about that is a lot of young people go into teaching and start at about that much money a year, $30,000. with a 4 year degree. that is pretty sad because then you add on paying back your school loans.

And what about health and car and renters insurance. It is tough.

So a single person flipping burgers at $12 and hour and only getting 24 hours a week is below the poverty level.

Same thing with the family of 4- Most people on this board know how much it costs to raise kids.

Lmao I doubt you get paid more than me, I do just fine. I'm not complaining at all about my wages - I'm pointing out the insane inequity in this country. You mentioned other countries that are worse than the US, funny, are you just guessing or do you have some data that shows Saudi Arabia, North Korea and Venezuela are worse than the US? There's 8 countries that have more inequality than the US, and only one of yours is on the list. The one that is? China. See any similarities between our countries? Tons of corruption between politicians and corporations. Same thing here.

I'm probably the least religious person on this forum, but why do people not listen to Jesus' words when he taught that we should use our financial resources to help the poor and needy through benevolence? Of all his teachings it seems the most convenient one to ignore, especially here in America. Or is it just that people don't want the government re-allocating money? Honest question. Obviously allowing people like Bezoz and others to donate as he wishes out of fear from eternal damnation hasn't worked so far. Yes I agree people should be rewarded for their hard work, their ideas and their ambition. I work with people like this every day. I also work with a family who spent their entire lives working incredibly hard and went bankrupt when their child got cancer. There should be more safety nets for people. Our country can afford it.

Don't tell me "well if you work hard and don't do drugs you can make it to the middle class." I'd love to watch you go to Flint Michigan, Forest Park in Detroit or Selma Alabama and try to spread that message. For 99% of these people there is no way out.

Here's a fun video that compares wealth using grains of rice. Keep in mind that 200 million people in this country have one grain of rice or less, likely including you:

I agree with most or all of your points. The way I look at it this country is so wealthy that no one should live in poverty, period. I have to watch what I say here because I could really lambast the wealthy, really wealthy. A lot of these people say they are religious and even very religious but as you said they will not help pass laws and social measures to make sure everyone has health care and everyone gets a good wage or protections. Instead many so called religious people have tried very hard to kick people off of their healthcare and those new protections.

My wife and I donate money to help people but the main problem in this country is the total lack of protections from going bankrupt from one major illness or losing your job through no fault of your own. It should not be this way. There really is not neighbor helping neighbor a lot of the time because you have to hold on to your money for that bad rainy day because there is not safety net.

I would say a very high percentage of people living in poverty are lazy. I'm not going to blast ambitious rich people because there are lazy poor people out there.

Wrong

Mental Illness
Childhood Trauma
Race
Lack of dad in the home

Would be in front of laziness.

Most "rich" got there wealth through asset acquisition which is about timing and have a balance sheet to accumulate property. Many rich that you are describing are some of the laziest people I know. Show me a single mom working multiple jobs to pull down 40k to take care of kids is hardly lazy.

I'll give you mental health. Most of the others might be reasons people are lazy, but lazy is still the reason they don't have a job. As far as race goes, ambitious black people aren't living in poverty, for the most part. Really what I should have said is there are two reasons people live in poverty. Laziness and intelligence level. A huge majority of the poverty fall into that category.

Come on man. If someone grows up to be lazy because they didn't have a dad, they are going to be poor because of their laziness. Not because of their lack of a dad.

Rob posted this message about all the big companies getting the big dollars in what has changed from a small business relief legislative bill to a hijacking of money by the wealthy.

As I said before, this bill was needed but didnt need to be 880 pages long and filled with gravy for some with no checks and balances. But I read yesterday that even though Trump is pushing back on oversight (not a political point but just a fact that he has said) the GAO which is Congress's accounting body and watchdog is already starting oversight investigations into who is getting this money. Things could get interesting.

It seems like most all presidents and their congresses couldnt handle the finances of your local little league. Even little leagues and all types of non-profits and small organizations usually have a two person signature rule on their checking and savings accounts.

And for all you posters on here who think I am being too hard on Trump well I think most all Presidents and Congresses do a piss poor job with the budget etc. Bush and Treas Sect Paulsen were bad starting the wall street bailout but then Obama could have pivoted to directly give money to underwater mortgage holders but he basically kept giving money to wall street and fannie mae. The best way I heard at that time seemed to be to give money to the homeowners to stop the foreclosures and also force down house prices that were too high. So I can see when lawmakers and the Exec branch seem to favor the rich.

Meaning this respectfully. You need to get out of Iowa and maybe the USA more.

The biggest factors with poverty world wide..

Being female, single with kids. Being a kid of a single mom. Being Black in the equation is certainly there.

There are welfare Queens grant you, but again blaming that is the lazy way out.

Great point Melrose! I started doing roofing, (paper,Hot tar, and rock chips) after high school. I became an electrical apprentice and worked until I got my journeyman card. I went to John Deere where I worked in maintenance for 30 years. I went back to construction working for contractors after JD. A person can make some serious coin if your willing to work. It's a good career to be in!
Roofing SUCKS! It's hot as hell (or cold and windy), you're up high, and you're frequently working at awkward angles.

I've volunteered to help neighbors with roofing jobs and after about two of those I told them next time I will help with concrete pouring, deck construction, digging fenceposts, anything but roofing. Hats off to ANYONE who does that for a living.

The US has 39,500 cases confirmed today with a few hours to go. It is the highest number of cases per day so far. I was hoping that maybe more tests were being done or counted but not sure it that is the reason as I heard the highest number of covid deaths for a day was recorded today at about 2,600. And New York State and NYC numbers are coming down so it is from the rest of the country. Numbers overall do not seem to be dropping. Maybe not a huge high spike upward we hope but there is this steady plateau of high numbers,

At this point I assume I'll be working from home until at least July. I've given up on having a baseball season. I just really, really hope we get football.

Where are your numbers coming from? Site I’ve been using says Roughly 26.000 new cases today.

If there are no jobs to be had in those areas I would agree that maybe I need to get out of Iowa. If there are jobs to be had and people aren't trying to get them, then it doesn't matter which state you're in, it's your fault. I know I'm not smart enough to work for NASA so I've got no problem saying some people are barely smart enough to work at McDonald's. I know I don't have the ambition to expand my business and try to make more money so I have no problem saying some people barely have enough ambition to work part time. Those are your main issues. Ambition and intelligence. If you're lucky enough to have both, it's impossible not to be successful.

If you want the last word on this I'll give it to you, but I dont want to keep down this path and give Rob a reason to kill this thread.
