Another tailgate area.....gone

First it was the rolling fields of Olive Court a few years ago.

Now, it's the three open areas (southbound down a gravel trail) directly off of the west end of the Melrose bridge. (If you've attended there, you know where I mean).

I drove by there yesterday and yup, trees gone, developers putting up yet more housing.

The area(s) held several hundred people and dozens of vehicles. I don't know where the tailgaters will gather now...Finkbine, Hancher?

Sort of sad.

Driving in alone 2 hours for a game, being older, meeting my friends for games and they like me dont get there until a little before game means I do little if no tailgating. But I remember when I lived in Iowa City for a dozen years and CRapids for 3 more years all the fun as younger people we had tailgating before and after games.

It is making it harder to go to games, parking a long ways away but others use the ramps and they did put in a nice lot just SE of Kinnick off Melrose a few years ago.

Apparently everyone in that area knew this was coming already. It's going to be a hotel

Much ado about nothing then

Ya I’ve pretty much just started going to the coaches corner and calling one of the bike taxis an hour before kick. Tailgating has gone to shit since Olive Court has been gone

The church there on Melrose got converted into some office / restaurant and pricey condo space. I believe the old Athletic club is closing down and will follow the same fate. There is definitely a number of those houses on Melrose that no one would care if they took down based on their condition. Assume most get rented to students.

I'd call displacing several hundred people more than an irritant. Yes, people knew and yes they were notified via mail but still...it was a fabulous place to congregate. Guess it'll lessen the post-game traffic jams onto Melrose.

Used to tailgate at Olive Court. Then at Myrtle. When we took our daughters we tailgated at the library lot. But I'm getting too old to do the walk to the stadium from there. Guess I'll just stay home and watch it on TV. Do you get that Barta? Like he gives a damn

It'll lesson the paid attendance at Kinnick. But Pythagoras is Gutless Gary's mouth piece on HN, so don't bother explaining it to him.

Go find yourself another public relations firm. Maybe if you keep throwing money at enough of them, one of them might be able to explain it to you and Gutless Gary. Then again.....maybe not.

For one game last year instead of tailgating we went to BWW in coralville for 2 hours and then took the train to the game. Younger me would have been completely ashamed and embarrassed to admit that, but with the way things are going around the stadium, it was just a lot less f'in hassle.

Not sure how Barta is responsible for non-University property???????? And for even that matter he is not the one making the calls on University property. That is ultimately the U Prez and the Board of Regents.

Lots of tailgating around train pick up area. There will just never be a ton of tailgating area right next to Kinnick. That was set in stone decades ago. If they ever build a brand new shiny stadium with bars and restaurants built into it west of town and turn over current location to the hospital then we will all get to congregate together. Won't happen in our lifetimes.

Yeah zero chance....They'll keep throwing money at Kinnick to keep it up forever.
