A Picture Says a Thousand Words

Try to keep it respectable, folks.

I don't think they got or appreciated the sarcasm.

If you've ever coached anything, there are few things more satisfying and emotional in life than beating an opponent against overwhelming odds
. Undefeated doesn't even compare. That had to be one of his favorite wins ever.

I could completely be on board with that myself if I hadn't experienced the HF early years and the KF of several years ago.

Great win. Great game plan. Lot's of issues. At least the next games are something to look forward too. KF never ceases to amaze me on both ends. I hope he doesn't amaze me in Champaign unless it because he hangs 50 on Illinois.

I helped coach my son's little league team last year and we beat a heavily favored team that nobody had given us a chance to beat and I was holding back tears. I can only imagine what Kirk felt like.

You can criticize Kirk Ferentz for a lot of things but his actions after this game should close the book on whether he's just mailing it in, collecting his huge salary.

Going into this season, I would have predicted Iowa to be favored in this game at home, at least slightly. We were 24 point underdogs at game time. Hmmm.

Caring means not prioritizing stubbornness above all other things.
I get it, but I don't equate stubbornness, if that's the label, with not caring. I've always felt he operates under the premise that it's worked in the past, it should work now - not because he's apathetic about the outcome, but incredulous that past success does not translate to current success. His ability to come up with obscure references to past plays from years ago suggests his mentality and reliance on what has worked before should work now. To that end, Saturday night's result will confirm that for him.

There are plenty of times over the years where I've questioned KFs decision making, game management, conservative/predictable play-calling, and ability to bring in and manage top-flight talent.

However, I never have, and never will, question the man's dedication and caring of the program, the team, its players and the university as a whole.

The picture says it all!

My thoughts as well.

He's an average football coach, but at least he cares.

But yet there are still some who say he's a well below average coach that doesn't care, is just mailing it in. They wrong.

I think the point of the thread is that the one knock on Ferentz that simply is bogus is that he doesn't care. There is plenty of argument that can be stated on whether he's a great, good, average, below average, or coach. I think there have been different times that he has been all 5 of those.

He is not a perfect coach. He isn't a fantastic coach. He isn't even a very good coach. But he is an above-average coach. You can't be an average coach and be at the same school for 18 years these days.

He's only averaged 7 wins a year in an era that plays 12 and/or 13 games a season. That is NOT above average.

Actually.....by both measures of mathematics and comparing to what the avg # of wins in all of FBS football....it is above average....not by much...but it is above average.

Unless,of course, you're going by some unquantifiable, subjective definition of what is average or above average....then maybe...yeah.

The real question is....can we get Above....slightly above average.

Say, something like....my signature...

He cares. He loves his players and wants them to succeed - wants them to feel the emotional payoffs like Saturday night.

But, what does he DO to help this happen? Is he really doing everything he can? Are those players given the best chance to succeed?

It's hard to say he's focused on helping them when the approach to most games seems the same. The players go into every game at a disadvantage because the other team knows exactly what's coming.

Kirk cares! He does what he does with what he has. I did not like the Greg Davis hire at all. He reminds me of Charlie Wies and his schematic advantage when he was hired at Notre Dame. We all know how that worked out. Also he was OC at New England so I'm not sure that Brians time there will help much!
