2019 Iowa Camp News/Update

Sometimes I think that too, but Eppy is so damn good coming off the edge. He could be a force inside as well, but harder to double him when he is wide. It is a tough call.
We all know AJ is an absolute beast and we need to let him eat red meat on Saturdays. I'd kind of like to see Phil utilize him at both the left side and right side DE just to give the offense and the two OTs something to think about. Let him pick on a weak RT on occasion or an inexperienced center at DT with that bull rush. Might also get a few more false starts and delay of game calls doing that because they'll be crapping their drawers.

speculation on my part, but what if you bring in AJ to be a pass rusher in obvious situations and you take out the cash player. you can then lineup AJ, literally, right next to AJE and have golston on the other side with lattimore and reiff in the middle. you can put AJ on either side of AJE and watch the OT and OG piss themselves cuz they have to also worry about lattimore. you immediately take the rb out of the passing game, other than to the opposite side of the field in which you would have your lbs keying. the TE will have to lineup on the same side also. it makes the offense more predictable and forces them to have to do it quickly. win defense.

i have a mental picture of harrison from the steelers when he was blowing everyone up.
If you’re rushing 5 that means you only have 6 in coverage. That’s not typical of Iowa football and Parker. We have blitzed a little more in recent years but typically we rush four an have seven in coverage. Also in pass rush situations I suspect Lattimore and Reiff would likely be off the field. Last year we had a 4 DE look (Hesse and one other inside). I think the speculation is Amani Jones plays basically as a DE in these situations without his hand in the ground, and a guy like Golston slides to the inside. Golston was inside on pass rushing situations last year at times.

Sort of like how JJ Watt is used

What makes you think AJ is such a beast? What has he ever shown in a game that lead you to believe this?

I love AJ as a Hawkeye, and I hope he finds his niche beyond special teams this year. The dude is, by all comments and actions, an amazing teammate. But he was so out of position as a linebacker early last season. I hope he is put in a position to thrive.

He is talking about Epenesa.

Golston and Hesse inside with AJ and A. Nelson rushing outside was the go to pash rush look for pretty much the whole season. So we know Golston is used to working from there. He is not as explosive as AJE, but he has a slipperiness that works well in those small spaces.

Amani Jones was shown with his hand on the ground quite a bit in this last batch of practice photos, so I am thinking he is transitioning into more of a full-time DE. I am hoping this means he is really taking to the position.

Is there someone else talented enough to bump AJE inside? I doubt it, unless one of the other LBs (Evans has been mentioned) is really shining in the pass-rush specialist mode. My guess would be one of their quicker DTs (e.g. Reiff) will be in there, or if Nixon really shows the ability to push the pockect backwards, he will earn the 3rd and long role.

As long as AJ isn't calling out the D formations and signals, it could be gold...

No secret here...but the best way to neutralize a crashing, disruptive, defensive end...is to run right at him. (IOWA has done it effectively). I think we'll see opponents try that a lot of that this year with AJE. It'll be interesting to see what Phil Parker dials up to counter it. I hope he has anticipated that strategy and is ready to go.

Hopefully he dials up Latt or Nixon.

Nixon looks to be the quick one on tape. If he’s as quick as he looks watch out as he’s already a large human and would be absolute beast for us inside. I like Reiff/Latt but Nixon has the potential to be very good. I hope he is

This is me waiting for news out of camp and hoping August goes fast.

It would be a travesty if AJE ever was moved inside.

Hypothetical...what if Team X had a really weak guard on the left side, and they are in a passing situation? You know they are going to have a protection called with either a TE or a back chipping on that side. What if you put Gholston as the RDE, and AJE as RDT lined up to abuse that guard, and Nixon lined up in the left side A gap to make it harder for the center to help? Just a thought.

Or they could just do this.

I'm starting to think that Jones may be the internet's second coming of Nico Law. I really hope he plays up to the hype this season, but I think we need to keep expectations grounded a bit.

The exciting part is that if Nixon turns out to be what we are a hoping, he is going to blow up the middle of the line. They are going to have to double team him. BUT they are going to have to double team AJ also.
That's where it gets fun.
Because every qb across from us had better be nervous and for good reason.
Now if we have some lb's who can lay the wood. The rb's on the other side should be nervous as well. Offenses will know they played a game after us.
Iron sharpens iron.
This could be not only the best defense we have ever had, I'll say it again, it could be a top 5 defense in the country.
