2019 Iowa Camp News/Update

Hypothetical...what if Team X had a really weak guard on the left side, and they are in a passing situation? You know they are going to have a protection called with either a TE or a back chipping on that side. What if you put Gholston as the RDE, and AJE as RDT lined up to abuse that guard, and Nixon lined up in the left side A gap to make it harder for the center to help? Just a thought.

Or they could just do this.

I'm sure AJE would be effective wherever he lines up. I just remember what a beast Ballard was on the edge in 2009 and he moved inside to tackle in 2010. I'm sure he probably helped out and made the overall line better by doing so, but his stats dropped off a bit. He was a bigger body than AJE too, AJE is a lot longer and just doesn't have enough girth to play DT IMO.
Haha wth was that. It didn't look like that effective of a play call, just was Anthony Nelson beating a double team. Looks kinda silly though, made me chuckle

That is kind of what I thought at first, too, A. Nelson just beat his man. But look at the indecision between the RG and RT, they definitely were a step behind due to confusion.

I see that too but even without the twist, if the D tackle just went to his right or even straight ahead, AN's first step inside was enough to beat the RT and earn a sack, if the RG was engaged it would have been even easier but would have left the edge exposed.

#1 Young better get mucho carries.
#2 All day is rather annoying
#3 Does the Marriott have cooks there to feed them whenever they want?

If you’re rushing 5 that means you only have 6 in coverage. That’s not typical of Iowa football and Parker. We have blitzed a little more in recent years but typically we rush four an have seven in coverage. Also in pass rush situations I suspect Lattimore and Reiff would likely be off the field. Last year we had a 4 DE look (Hesse and one other inside). I think the speculation is Amani Jones plays basically as a DE in these situations without his hand in the ground, and a guy like Golston slides to the inside. Golston was inside on pass rushing situations last year at times.

grant. if you rush five and you can do so in such a way that you can bring a free rusher, or cause the offense to go max protect, you limit both time and options for the offense. its maximum pressure in obvious passing downs. obvious passing downs equate to long yardage situations and requires time for receivers to get down field. i think we can rely on our lbs and db's to cover man for 3 to 4 seconds, assuming the pass rush reaches the qb.

In the pictures from today Paulson working with Golston. Is Wirfs hurt or just repping/roaring to give line different units to mesh with?

Would think w limited time that all the reps in regards to OL play would be the unit you’d like to have playing together.

Love those camp videos done well. Any insider information on who’s starting Secondary and any freshman pushing for playing time(RB/TE)

Balls behind, not hitting receiver in stride, ball thrown high. Hoping this was the BTN day and what they saw as NS looked a little choppy. Still have 3 mins left just had to leave this, anyone else thoughts?

Still have high hopes but geez let’s go NS

Stanley throws that were shown:

1:15, fits ball in tight window to Ragaini, hits him in stride
1:26, perfectly thrown deep ball to ISM for TD
2:00, well thrown cross-route to Tracy for TD against #1 D

5:15 to 5:40, WR drills, no idea which QB is throwing balls

5:59, looks like 1-on-1 drills, Ragaini has his guy beat deep by 2 steps, Stanley leaves it a bit short, but not so much that D can make a play on it (in live action, could have been the difference between getting tackled on the 5 vs. a TD)

6:10, 7-on-7, Tracy breaks into an open window on a deep cross, Stanely hits him in the #s for an easy TD; it is possible that Stanley could have led him more, but there is no way of knowing without being able to see a wide-view; perhaps leading him further across the field would have put him right into coverage, against zone you throw to space

6:18, drops a beatiful ball to Weiting (over LB, in front of safety, hits him in the hands on the move), but it is probably half-a-second late. Weiting is popped by Hankins as the ball gets there, the ball pops up, and Weiting corrals it as it comes back down. This is probably the most questionable throw of the video.

So we saw 6 throws by Stanley. Four are hard to find any fault with. One was left short to a wide open deep receiver, but still easily completed. The other was thrown late, but right on the money, and completed.
