2019 Iowa Camp News/Update

I think the idea with Amani this year, is to give him just one responsibility: line up as a DE or OLB and rush the passer with as much ferocious energy as possible. That is it. Seek and destroy the QB. Nothing else. Just get in there and sic ‘em!

Also, be the captain of that killer Kickoff coverage team.

It's a position that has fewer reads, but he still has to pay some attention to contain.

BTN tour is doing a Mic'd up segment during their visits. Wonder which coaches they will do with Iowa. So far I believe have been doing coordinators. I would like a Phil Parker uncensored one.

Amani Jones, as great of a teammate as he is (by all accounts), couldn't cut the mustard with the mental side of playing LB last year. He was out of position and missing assignments non-stop and got pulled early on in the year. You have to realize that at this level of football being a physical beast isn't enough; I'd argue it's less than half of the big picture.

There's a reason guys like Jewell and Kirksey can thrive at the NFL level while being undersized and not as strong or fast as more athletic linebackers...they're smart and instinctive, they learn the defensive scheme, and they can read offenses and put themselves in the right spots to make up for the physical shortcomings.

With Jones, I'd have to trust Seth Wallace's opinion on who should start over any opinion on this board (including mine). He'll be a DC and HC someday in the not too distant future.
The Amani Jones infatuation is very interesting. I think most people understand after the NIU game last year why he wasn’t getting more play time at LB.

Now he’s moved to play some “edge” working more with the Dline group. If you go on TOS there is a certain group of posters who think he’s going to tear it up at that spot and be this pass rushing specialist.

Honestly I’m not sure on that either. One of the big traits needed for an edge pass rusher typically is length. Amani Jones is listed at 5’11.

He seems like a great Hawkeye and I hope it works out this year. I’m not opposed to getting his strength and athleticism out there in certain situations if it makes sense, but when we have AJE and Golston I don’t think you need to reinvent the wheel to generate a pass rush.

Maybe he can catch a little of the Leroy Smith in a bottle. Leroy was undersized but very productive. I see him as a niche player where he is involved in certain situations.

This, very.much this.

Some posters all too often mistake being an amazingly gifted athlete with being an amazing football player.

Interesting thought. and I hope that can work out as Jones has always been a team and culture guy. I remember watching LeRoy Smith many years ago, he was a total terror monster. Half of that would lead to Amani have a very good and successful senior year.

I should also add that Sutton Smith from NIU last year was a very high level college pass rusher and is 6’ so it is possible.

Picture this, Nixon, all 300+ punds of him setting up over center, AJE and Golston on the edges, Jones lurking and the O knowing they are coming at them hard...........

then throw the Cash at them...............

<<got pulled early in the year>>

Don't you mean "got pulled in the first series of the year"?

Again with this "imagine" thing...

Since everything in life has a yin to it's yang, then humor me and imagine Jones "lurking" and blowing his assignment on a motion man, or crashing instead of covering, and letting the ball blow by him while he tackles air. Because that's what actually happened and I'm more inclined to go with that over imagination. Could he be better at the heady stuff? Absolutely. But until coaches who work with it everyday come out and say he's the guy then he's not. Everyone on both the offense and defense has a job before the play. Remembering your job is step one. Step two is reacting to the play and making adjustments to that job on the fly, which requires situational smarts. Jones flopped at both last year and you've given us nothing as a reason for the LB spot to be his. Brian Shaw could body slam every Hawkeye player on the team, and Usain Bolt would put 20 yards between our fastest guy and himself, but neither would make good P5 football players.

You're making the kid out to be Lawrence Taylor when the only thing he's ever shown on the football field is special teams help. What's your obsession here? And what is you basis for claiming that Amani Jones is better than the rest of the depth chart other than the Walter Mitty stuff you've got playing in your head?

It is the backup QB syndrome.

Well who is Amani Jones going to replace if he comes in on obvious passing downs. AJE is going to be at one D End position, probably right D End. Gholston should be in there I would think so is Gholston moving to a D Tackle position and Jones is going to be the left D End? Will it be a full Raider alignment with no one having a hand on the ground?

I hope this works and we get a bunch of sacks and Jones gets a bunch of sacks and pressures.

likely vanvalkenberg and jones come in for a raider look with vanvalkenberg and Chauncey/eppy going inside

speculation on my part, but what if you bring in AJ to be a pass rusher in obvious situations and you take out the cash player. you can then lineup AJ, literally, right next to AJE and have golston on the other side with lattimore and reiff in the middle. you can put AJ on either side of AJE and watch the OT and OG piss themselves cuz they have to also worry about lattimore. you immediately take the rb out of the passing game, other than to the opposite side of the field in which you would have your lbs keying. the TE will have to lineup on the same side also. it makes the offense more predictable and forces them to have to do it quickly. win defense.

i have a mental picture of harrison from the steelers when he was blowing everyone up.
