How 1 Referee Error Changed B1G Standings

When Referee Chris Beaver failed to give Iowa a time out at the end of the Minnesota game not only did he affect Iowa, but it had a dramatic effect on the standings. If he had gotten it right there would be four teams tied for fourth place with 9 and 7 records; Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan and Iowa. That error has moved Minnesota ahead of Maryland for the 3rd position in the tournament and moved Iowa behind three teams for the fifth spot. Why referees can stop to review many other things like 3 pt shots, shot clock time, etc, but can't review a call in the last 30 seconds is perplexing

Not to mention, going to double OT on the road completely wiped us out for a winnable road game at MSU...

I don't know how many MN games you have watched this year but they seem to be getting a lot of love from the refs. Especially at home. I have seen fans from other teams noticing this trend as well.

As well as the Illinois game according to the players. In interviews they said they felt drained and did not play well in the Illinois game. Anyone who watched would agree. That Minnesota game was a season changer.

Refs are humans who make mistakes. I didn't get to see this "blown" call but certainly it has affected things.

Thousands of plays and coaching decisions (many of them not that good) have affected this season. Opportunities have been many and the young team has done well.

Looking back...Iowa could be in the NCAA hunt in a much more positive way if...

Iowa could learn to make free throws at a higher percentage

Iowa could learn to avoid coming out, lethargic and sleep walking in the early part of each half

Iowa could learn to block out on their rebounding effort

Iowa could learn how to win close games on a regular basis

Good season...keep it rolling vs Wisconsin, icing on the cake...

What might have been and what might have been taken away are irrelevant, only the next game in Madison matters right now.

We still would've had to make free throws to win the game. We still had a chance to win the game and didn't. With that said, that was one of the worst calls I've seen since the MSU travel that wasn't called against us. Really the entire second half of that game.

Wow, this post is quite the show stopper. All of those things are true but if Iowa did those things better we wouldn't be discussing what might have been we'd be talking about what seed we would be. You can't deny that 1 play had a huge impact on the season. With a young team the margin for error was small to begin with and plays like that become more scrutinized. While unproductive it is fun to think about what might have been had that play been reversed and it is a good example at how close they are to being a NCAA tournament team.

Well let's see if I can explain it. During a timeout with Iowa ahead by 2, Fran tells the officials if we get the ball again we want a timeout so watch for that. Minnesota inbounds shoots and misses. Iowa's Brady Ellington rebounds and waits to see if he is fouled. He then calls timeout at the same time Jordan Bohannon is running at the referee calling timeout. Both are clearly heard on the BigTen Plus feed. Meanwhile Ellingson is tied up by a Minnesota player who is clearly standing out of bounds. End result Minnesota ball. They score and with seconds left to tie the game. I'm sure there's a You Tube video if you doubt my recounting of the events.

Bottom line...the young team has done well...has demonstrated what it is like to be inexperienced and talented...and is a forward looking group of players.

Think of the darkness of Lick and Alford and the sun is shining brightly right now...can't wait to see the "new" teams for the next several years.

Two issues...nothing new...

A talented, play-making, quick PG to run the engine is a missing link to a conference title

A way for Fran to figure out how to win close games more often

I am hopeful...and excited

I don't believe that is the case. An out of bounds call is reviewable but since OB wasn't the initial call it wasn't reviewable.

I think it could have been reviewed had anybody on the team seen his foot was out of bounds and alerted the officials to it. But since they were disputing the call of the timeout it couldn't be reviewed. It all happened so fast and people generally watch the play and not peoples feet. Most didn't notice it until we saw the replay.

Terrible call but it serves no purpose to dwell on it. Terrible calls happen all the time. Woody should have been called for a foul in the Temple tournament game last year as well. Sometimes they go our way, other times the other way.

You're correct. The OP was about how 1 play affected the standings, and possibly Iowa's tournament chances. It wasn't about how if Iowa was better at certain things, their record would be better. A thread hijack was effectively met at the rim by you and rejected. <Mutombo finger wag>.

Very few simplistic, one thought threads, like life...

1,000 plays and calls could be analyzed as season changing...

Now you're just being obtuse....

Very few plays and calls are as blatantly obvious and game-changing as the one that happened at Minnesota. You admit you never saw the game or the call in question, yet you feel the need to comment on it. Maybe you should let the ones that actually saw the call and actually know the impact it has debate the effect on the season and you can just sit back and observe?

Thanks in advance.....

The lesson that should be taken here is that college refs are bad in general. Be it football or basketball. Its very rare to get a good crew. So don't leave it in their hands.

like life, one simplistic action can change a person's life.

And 1000 other thoughts or actions that had nothing to do with that one action can still happen.

I think the lesson is: You need to win in a dominant fashion on the road (like Rutgers and Maryland), and not let the game get close because the refs will favor the home team. Iowa is 6-2 at home in the BIG and 2-6 on the road. We get the calls at home as well. In the Indiana game, at a critical juncture in OT, Peter Jok basically ran over an Indiana player and scooped the ball in for a layup. It was a pretty play, but an obvious charge that was not called, working in Iowa's favor at a critical point on the game.

Bottom line: Blow them out on the road and keep it close at home.
