Watching the PTL games

That depends on the turnovers. These weren't the behind the back, flashy pass variety. But you'll see soon enough when the season starts.

True. If he got his pocket picked 8 times against that competition it says a lot. He either had a really bad game or Fran will have to find a way to overcome it.

I find it interesting that lightning decided to count CW's turnovers for 3/4 of the game. It's equally interesting that he decided to quit keeping track for the last 1/4 of it.

It's possible that CW didn't give a rip about ball security since it is just a pick up league. It's possible he would give it due diligence once the real season starts.

It's more possible he's not a great ball handler for a PG which is why he's a natural wing

True. But Gesell could dribble the ball in and around defenders without getting his pocket picked. Even Sapp could do that.

You know there's this theory where you move the ball in basketball? He doesn't have to be the kind of jitterbug PG that dribbles all over. You adjust your team to your players.

No one here is disagreeing with you or 5656 about the fact the Hawks are lacking a true PG. I'm just astounded at how big of a deal you guys are making out of it. The options the Hawks will have at the PG position present a lot more mismatches than the options they've had in the past. Specifically in regards to scoring. I have no doubt there will be more turnovers. There will be growing pains. However, there will also be a couple of different guys running point who can score the damn ball and that's not something they've had in Iowa City for quite awhile. Plus they'll have players around them who are going to open up the court for them. It will probably take them some time to adjust, but they'll be just fine with what they have. I think you guys are making a huge deal about something that won't be come the midpoint of the season.

Spot on. Some people have such tunnel vision. We were always going to struggle at the PG position this year, and that included if he got Vital or Moore to commit.

This is what I don't understand. How or why do you think CW and Bohannon are better scorers than Mike was? Mike scored 1072 points in his career, I'd be surprised if either CW or Bohannon do that.

Vital probably, with Moore I think we went have been pretty solid this year. He was dominant more times than not on the AAU circuit

I agree. Vital, Moore, Bohannon, Williams, none of them will be as good this year as Gesell was as a Sr. That doesn't mean though that the team is gonna suck.

I don't think this team is going to suck. I think they will be an NIT team. I think with Moore or someone with similar talent they would have been a tournament team though

Also I've had multiple posters saying CW is going to be an upgrade this year from Mike last year and will average double digit points

He's my prediction to be the 2nd leading scorer this year. It's not like I'm throwing out guarantees or anything. But it is my prediction.

They might be. I have a feeling we will be saying "wow Gesell wouldn't have ever done that" a lot about Williams this year, both good and bad.

Well first for of all Mike was a 4 year starter for Iowa and he was incredibly healthy for most of those 4 years so that's a huge part of the reason he made it to 1000 points. He averaged 8, 7, 7, and 8 ppg in his 4 years as a starter. That's not difficult to top at all for a guy getting the kind of minutes Mike was getting. He couldn't finish at the rim. He struggled mightily with the 3 ball. He couldn't hit free throws to save his life. He had a decent jumpshot when he got into a rhythm. That was it. He averaged a couple jump shots and a few made free throws per game. That's it.

I'm not saying CW or Bohannon will break Mike's 1072 points over his career because he played a ton of minutes. However, I have zero problem predicting they'll both average more points per game than him. They are just better scorers. Each one of them in a little bit different fashion.

How could you know they are better scorers? Bohannon has never played and CW barely got minutes

How could you know they are better scorers? Bohannon has never played and CW barely got minutes

I think it is easy to see what style a player is from watching even just a short period of them playing. As soon as CW came into games he attacked, even though he had little to now game experience. I think that is just his style. Just like you could tell right away that Gesell was more of a facilitator than scorer.

It is two different styles is all. While I like Gesell and what he brought, as others have pointed out he was limited offensively. This year we will have CW who is more of a natural attack the basket kind of player who will turn it over more than Mike did.

To keep saying things like "why do you think he will do it this year" is kind of silly though. Why did Marble jump from 6 PPG to 12 PPG as a Fr to So. why did Jok jump from 7 PPG to 16 PPG last year? It is a combination of being a year older, and a bigger role on the team as other players move on. Lots of new players are going to get time now since we lose 115 of the 200 MPG to graduating Sr. Several players are going to be scoring lots more than last year.

Surely, you'd believe that Bohannon will at least provide a 3pt threat that Gesell couldn't do. Gesell was not a threat from 3pt last year which made it much more difficult for Jok to get open.

CW is a wild card. I'd be shocked if he put up more than 8 ppg but like you said I would have been shocked if someone said Pete was going to improve like he did from his Soph to his Jr year. Bohannon is more limited offensively than Mike was. He's pretty much an undersized Brady or Josh and neither of them were as good as scorers as Mike was

Being a better 3 pt shooter doesn't mean you're a better scorer.
