Why Maryland and Syracuse?

I get Rutgers, ND, and (sort of) Nebby.

I don't get Maryland or Syracuse...

Can someone explain why those two schools?

I think Rutgers by itself doesn't get BTN into NY cable, but a Rutgers-Syracuse package does. Maryland brings another popular state into the BTN on basic cable fold. Both MD and Syr bring good research into the CIC too.

With Maryland you get Baltimore and DC market, more people in maryland then Mizz, with Syracuse combined with Rutgers your guaranteed New York. Lot of talk that Rutgers alone wasn't enough to pull NY. And we establish more presents in the east great recruiting tool.

Maryland gets the DC area market, is a "research 1" university and AAU member, Syracuse is an AAU member and brings a solid research rep, research $$$

Syracuse has a pathetic and way sub par facility for football and basketball. It would make Northwestern's facilties look prime.

Syracuse I'm skeptical about... very little athletic or research dollars. If you get Rutgers you don't need Syracuse.

Maryland is so obvious. It opens up another huge TV market, is good academically, has research dollars and is near DC where decisions are made and power resides. No brainer if we can get them.

3 awesome gets would be Rutgers, Marlyand and Georgia Tech to go along with Nebraska and Notre Dame(or next best).

I understand Maryland. Big population. But I don't see the Orange. I'd rather see Mizzou.

'Cuse doesn't do much for me either, I guess they're lucky I'm not a one-man selection committee. I do like Maryland tho, great academics and the conference will have a presence on the East Coast. Maryland is a pretty state too, as long as you stay out of the Baltimore slums.

The eastern seaboard from Boston to D.C has approx. 45 million people. That is why you get Syracuse and Maryland to try and get a foothold on both ends of that and hope having ND and Rutgers is enough to get the middle.

Not to mention the DC area is a football recruiting hotbed.

Syracuse has some tradition in football (far more than McNabb, anyone who thinks he's the source of what little tradition they have is just ignorant), and they have an elite basketball program. Something to consider on that front: if Izzo leaves for the Cavs, the Big Ten may be in the market for another elite basketball program, because MSU could take a serious dip.

Very good point on recruiting.

The only issue is what happens when Coach Boeheim retires in the near future? He's no spring chicken. I'm not saying I wouldn't take Syracuse but I think there are other compelling possibilities.

Georgia Tech is another huge key. Not sure they are interested but that would put the Big Ten foot print into another huge TV/population market and into SEC country.

Pittsburgh or Virginia would be interesting plan B's. Both are good academically and have research dollars to compliment.

Maryland = Baltimore and DC markets

Syracuse = Great football and basketball history, possible/partial NYC market
