Zack McCabe Appreciation Thread

Zach did not lose the game for us. We gave the game to the Badgers and one noncall in the last few minutes really hurt.....

After Oglesby hit his last shot, he was slammed to the ground by one of the Badgers. There are three referees who saw the foul and did not call it. Could not have been a more obvious foul. There was about a minute left and gave us a one point lead.....

We gave a basket to Kaminsky by our center running out to the free throw line or beyond, leaving Kaminsky wide open between him and the basket, a lob pass and easy basket erased our one point lead with under a minute left.....

We turned the ball over twice and they scored both times.....

It should not have come down to a last few seconds desperation shot. As Tm said; When was the last time we won a game on a last second shot, perhaps James Moses at Indiana.....

Josh should have been the number one option, then Devyn for the last shot. They probably would have fouled either one of them to make them tie the game from the stripe, especially Josh who was red hot.....

There is no guarantee that anybody would have made a shot. The game was lost before that....

Izzo, Ryan and to a lesser degree Matta own the Big Ten referees, therefore there are a lot of noncalls or ticky tacky fouls. Simply the way it is. The other night when MSU played perhaps the best game of the year in the Big destroying Purdue, they were up at least 20 points and didn't get a ticky tack call and Izzo was out on the floor crying to the refs as he did all game. It is sickening, same with Ryan, who wasn't quite as obnoxious as he has been at Carver.....

As uihawk says Basabe not able to play really hurt defensively in the middle and also scoring under the basket, which we couldn't do.....

Also the 50/50 balls usually went to the Badgers. We were not ready for their blazing hot start.....

Wisconsin was extremely hot starting and finishing the game.....

I was proud of the Hawks coming back from behind by 11, I believe, in the second half to lead by four, and kept the lead for a while and kept getting it back in a close tense final few minutes. I think we lost the game on Kaminsky's wide open basket with about a minute left to take the lead by one.....

Badgers have the easiest schedule in the Big Ten left as far as I can see. Indiana and Purdue at home and at Penn St. and Nebraska.....

They have definitely playing like a team that will go far in the NCAA Tournament along with the Spartans.....

We probably will finish fourth in the Big and that would be remarkable all things considered and are still in third place in the Big, and we will make the Tournament, also remarkable....

Once again, Zach did not lose the game for the Hawks.....

Excellent threads, Melrose and Uihawk

Iowa also had an issue guarding the 3 ball as that #24 killed us. This has been a bug-a-boo with some other losses this year. A certain player going off beyond the arc that was unexpected. They need to cover that a little better. Basabe out really hurt us inside. We needed another athletic player down in there.

B!tching about the players? Apparently its impossible to actually add some criticism to a basketball team that may likely under perform in a season where analysts were talking about a top 10 program. In a season where we have lost every close game in arguably the same fashion every single time? Apparently there are still a few of you that feel the player or the coach are above the program and should NEVER be questioned regardless of circumstances?

Not ONCE have I ever criticized Zach McCabe as a player...NOT ONE TIME! The worst thing I can recall ever saying about the kid is that he isn't tall enough to play the position and that he's a role player on a top 25 D1 program. NEVER have I questioned his desire or his toughness or his willingness to lay it on the line. NEVER have I said the kid shouldn't be a hawkeye and not once have I ever stated that I don't want him on the team.

The kid is a role player on ANY Top 25 D1 program. He would likely be logging 4-10 minutes and used sparingly (if at all) in programs where there are not one but TWO 6'11" or taller post players. We have Basabe and White that should be playing the 4 position and Uthoff who should be playing the 3. That leaves practically no minutes for a role player and yet the COACH finds it necessary to put this kid in the game during crunch time EVERY SINGLE GAME and it has backfired EVERY SINGLE GAME without exception - or can one of you remember a game this season where we were within 1 or 2 possesssions (up or down) with less than 2 minutes to play AND we won AND a certain player was on the floor? I can tell you of the 1 game that we were within 1 or 2 possessions where a certain player was NOT on the floor with under 4 minutes to go and we WON. It also happens to be one of the very few games this season where Olaseni and Woody combined for 40 or more minutes. For those of you scratching your heads it was the Illinois game. It was that game that I had thought that Fran realized the blueprint for this teams late game success. Apparently that, combined with the lecture that he gave a certain player, combined with 2 weeks of sitting around created a form of amnesia.

So basically, gfyouself if you don't like that I can be critical without bashing a player for his efforts.

Yet with him in the game against Wisconsin we were +4 pts...some don't like the plus minus stat but with white, olaseni, and oglesby they were each at -10 or more. I like oglesby and I am throwing him in there. White and gabe were bad. I did notice people playing with marble at pg had minus numbers. That is telling to me.

Why does this thread have a "Carfino, you're ugly" feel to me. McCabe doesn't need anyone to defend him. He's a contributor to a damn good basketball team that hasn't had alot of "fortunate bounces" in big games. Zach will bounce back and the morons need to understand their frustration shouldn't be pointed at McCabe, but rather his head coach. Trust me, we own those losses with mistakes at crucial times, but we've also been the victim's of poor calls, and teams ALWAYS hitting the big shots. Gasser hit a few absolutely monumental threes down the stretch, and #24 was unconscious in the first half...his second time scoring more than ten points all year. Things have a way of evening out and unlike some who feel this team will fold in the tournament in the inevitable close games, I disagree. I think they are building the character necessary to survive in those games. At some point you say, things can go wrong, but I'm not going to be uptight about it...I'm going to give you my best shot.

What's unbelievable is #24 is shooting 29% from 3 this year!!!!

No issues with Ogelsby on him... Lil shake and bake and rise up.

In all fairness I could have gone 0fer from the field and fouled out. Probably would have hit rim too.

Good for you stud... hitting the rim is still called a MISS. Feel free to jump ship !! It's fans like you who disgust me. Take your other rose colored fricken fans with you! The rest of us are moving forward.

Hawkeye "A" 27.0 mins . . 12.9 ppg . . 6.6 rpg . . 2.0 apg
Hawkeye "B" 16.3 mins . . 6.3 ppg . . 3.1 rpg . . 1.3 apg

Minute proportion determines games stats. "B" minutes go up to "A" minutes, then you basically have the same player by stats.
Guess who is who.

OK, now just conference stats:

Player A 16.3 min....4.5 ppg.....2.7 reb
Player B 30 min......13.3 ppg.....7 reb

Also throw in the Iowa State game where player A 0 pts and 3 reb and player B had 25 pts and 17 reb. Padding your stats against UNO and Maryland Eastern Shore doesn't impress me.

Re: Zach McCabe Appreciation Thread

Ok. So he shouldn't have posted his statement on Twitter. That fact that he was so upset shows he cares and cares about his team. He was frustrated. So, to those fans who think they can log on Twitter with anonymity & post crap about a 22 year old young man is pathetic. These are the same people who would not even play for their local community college team.

Look people, maybe he's not the most athletic, but he came in the Lickliter years and stuck around and worked his azz off the last four years. He could have transferred but didn't. Iowa needed bodies & he stuck it out. Much like Jared Cole. I also appreciated Cole for sticking around & battling thru his injuries. So, people going on Twitter & calling out McCabe or any young college player is quite pathetic. This is not life or death people. Teams have up-and-downs & Iowa needs to find themselves.

Ogelsby had inconsistent shooting most of his career up until now & now look at him. He's the talk of the town.

So, to those fans who find it necessary to talk shitick to McCabe when they couldn't even hold his jok strap, screw you. This team does not need fans like you and we fan's who appreciate the hard work of players like Zach McCabe don't need you on our team or supporting our Hawks. If you can't get it or understand that, then you clearly can "Go Suck a Fat One", because we don't need you!!

This said it all. Thread should have been closed with just this post.

I agree, Melrose....

We stopped Brust, probably because of his injury, but Gasser and Koenig were 6 of 9 from the three, and That really hurt.....

We stopped Staukaus at Carver, so we have the ability, but couldn't stop Kaminsky inside, so we would sag on him leaving the snipers open. It happens to the best of teams, Creighton at Villanova being one prime example, hitting their first nine threes and making 21 threes in the game. MSU made 17 threes, I believe, at Purdue last week.....

You must have watched the Iowa at UCLA game....

Good post....

+/- isn’t indicative of what happened yesterday, as it fails to account for momentum shifting plays, such as failed charge attempts that result in and 1’s. I’m sorry but there’s no sugarcoating that performance. It was bad.

You wouldn't even make it to the warm-up drills to be given the chance. The majority of people couldn't even play on a college team. That's my point.

How dare you say something disparaging online. That's like, worse than the holocaust. I expect Hlas to write up an article shortly.

Individual +/- is worthless, much like the RBI for baseball, too much is dependent on outside factors to be considered a useful metric for measuring a particular player's worth.

Soooooo when he tells us that we “Suckâ€￾ and to “Go suck a fat oneâ€￾ it’s that he cares about the team and hes a great guy and rescues puppies from burning buildings and volunteers at your local homeless shelter? Also he need not take any responsibility for his actions. Good lesson to kids that look up to him.

Seriously though can we fix the title of the thread so his name is spelled correctly?

I tried. I went into the edit mode & advanced & changed it to Zach, but when I went out, it was the original. Hopefully, one of the mods can change it. I'll try again. It is disrespectful. I wasn't thinking when I started the thread.
