You can't polish a turd.

You know, O'Keef, we're definitely in the minority. You'll probably understand this: Iowa football fans are like Chicago Cubs baseball fans. Winning isn't as important as doing things the 'right way'.

If you are looking at it from a business perspective (which we should) then it does not make much sense to keep allowing that big contract to continue losing money out the back door. Ferentz's salary starts looking small when you look at the lost revenue of tickets are being left unsold, people stop showing up to the games (consesions, parking, ect), donations start drying up, ad revenue starts dropping. Ferentz salary could easily turn into a 8-10 million dollar expense if you look at lost revenue, so why keep the guy around just for 3 million when you can hire someone new for 2 and regain that lost revenue (at least for 1 or 2 seasons).

In order for this to be successful the assumptions are (and they are big assumptions);

1. The selection/hiring new coach will generate an immediate excitement within the fan base thereby increasing demand for tickets and allowing the university to increase ticket costs.

2. The new coach can generate a winning season within 1-2 years and maintain, at minimum, 7+ win seasons.

3. Part of the fan base isn't alienated by the termination of KF (ala Mr. Davis Davis).

I agree, the longer they let things go the tougher it will be to get them back. They would have to bring in a pretty big name in order for a new coach to have an immediate impact. When KF was hired to replace Fry the attendance went down and it took a few winning seasons to build it up to where it is now. Someone say (just throwing a name out there) Bob Stoops could generate that kind of enthusiasm with the fan base to where it would have an immediate impact on the ticket sales.

3. Part of the fan base isn't alienated by the termination of KF (ala Mr. Davis Davis).

I disagree here, Tom Davis was winning at Iowa but the attendance was dropping at the end of his tenure. It was not until the Pierre Pierce incident under Alford when fans got alienated.

Actually, you can polish a turd. Mythbusters proved this in one of their episodes...

Well, both fan bases are incredibly dumb (myself included) for continuing to buy season tickets despite the performance on the field. The thing is no one wants to be left out in the cold in the event that one World Series or magical season like 2002 or 2009 happens. But even CubFan has a limit. Wrigley looks like a ghost town now.

You can polish a turd if its made from silver or gold or another type of metal. So polish this turd and go win some games

If we are so much better than last year, how is it that last year we beat a supposedly superior NIU team on a neutral field and this year we lost to them at home? Are we basing this "better team" concept on one quarter when we actually appeared to run an efficient offense? Personally, I'm going to have to see a bit more to be convinced.

I hear you, but 1/4 quarters of solid offense is a massive improvement for this team.

Strictly the eye test, but my eyes are pretty good in cases like this.

I think this NIU team looked much different than last years team at the time we played them. Had we played NIU in November last year, I think they would have won by 3 TDs. This years NIU team had teh confidence of knowing who they are and what they do and a veteran Lynch at the helm. They might have won the MAC in 2011, but they came into last year with an entirely new OL and QB. We caught them at the right time.

I had them at 4-0 in OOC, and 4-4 in the B1G. I now think they will go 3-1 and 4-4 now. And I think that because they have talent they didn't have last year even though GD still sucks.

Hands down, this is the #1 reason I renewed this season. Unfortunately, it's a gigantic catch-22 - I LOVE the Hawks but I am disgusted at such a low quality product. (No, not because I think we should win every game, but because, every year, for the past several, we don't win every game we should. No, not just my opinion that we should, every knowledgeable college football fan's opinion that we should. No, not just because those teams are better than Iowa but because some inexplicable, inexcusable, completely avoidable situation is deliberately created or bungled that directly contributes to incompetent execution, loss of competitive advantage and underperforming relative to our own talent and the talent of the opponent.) Now, it's almost as if I've crossed the point of no return. Each year is one year closer to KF being gone but I want to be in the stands, filled with anticipation, when that season starts.

How many times could Iowa have won a game the last 4 seasons by simply stopping onside kicks and fake punts?

Its a glaring pattern that shouldn't happen to any team with a competent coaching staff.

Just off the top of my head. Ouch.

The Boss has sort of opened up my thinking on this...Ferentz's buyout in his contract is a sunk cost...it's done, unless he should resign which I don't think is likely...so that money is already spent...I've debated that you can't think of replacing Kirk for a few more years because of the cost....but again, that cost is already done...it's already been factored into the going forward budget. Yes, you still have to pay a new coach over $2mil per year, so Iowa would be spending a ton of money on a football coach with no guarantees a new one would have similar or better results.

So we can't really bemoan the salary other than the merits of the deal....and while I feel there will be a Ferentz 2014, beyond that I am not as certain as I used to be.

There's an important point here: we could conceivably be engaged in a massive payout with no guarantee of better results. My optimal scenario is that Kurt evolves even if only by letting talented but inexperienced guys start and play instead of older guys who have no upside and don't produce results which enable winning. But he won't even evolve in that small way, and that is just borderline pathological in a business where winning is preeminent.

Well pat yourself on the back buddy boy. It would be real easy to say your beloved 4-8 hawks from a year ago would lose the opener against a 11-2 BCS team from a year ago.

I predicted a 10+ pt win by the hawks and I think most people on this board and most fans say they saw a team that easily could have done that. Even with the mistakes if the coaches dont handcuff the offense in the 2nd half it could have easily been 38-27 hawks.

That's one of my biggest problems with Kurt. He (and GD) are limiting the offense yet there are so many on this board that fail to recognize it. Scoring in college football is pretty easy because you're playing against college defenses (missed assignments and penalties are everywhere). You have to TRY though. You can't keep doing the same stuff that too often results in stalled drives over and over. They treat passes over 15 yards like a trick play, yet it's a staple of every effective offense in college and the pros. They don't put any real pressure on defenses. Defensive coordinators aren't losing sleep about 5 yard out routes and the power I. If Iowa reeled off 10 yard play after 10 yard play, that would be one thing. They don't though, so you're left with short drives that end at midfield.

I wish KOK were back, at least the offense scored back then.

^The offense was not handcuffed in the second half. The wrong plays were called in the wrong situations and wasted at least two third-and-shorts. Should have kept running the ball when the D needed a breather, and their D was getting tired; and taken the shots on first or second down, not third and short.
