woodbury

I can understand the Woodbury criticism *only* in the context that I understand fan psychology (i.e. if a big guy comes in highly touted and doesn't shatter 3 backboards his freshman year, he is a disappointment/failure!)

Looking at him objectively as a bubbling cauldron of post potential, I have a really hard time not being excited about what may be in store down the road.

I've said this over & over, but he is a finesse big man people. If there is ANY player archetype you need to have patience with, it's that one. Let the kid develop his game & we'll all be reaping the rewards before it's done.

Not sure Woody would be labeled a finesse player at all. He is a rugged dude in there, considering how tall he is. He is on the way to becoming Kevin Kunnert II, a tall gangly guy who just kept getting stronger and more physical. Woody is on track to replace the Brawler...Zach, and become Brawler II. He loves contact, and getting and giving. I envisioned a skinny dude with a skinny attitude...but Woody is far from that. He loves to mix it up and is scared of no one.

I hope so, but I don't see Woodbury averaging more than 7 points a game for the rest of his career.

I will take a lifelong ban from Jon if that comes to fruition.

You will have to start from the beginning of next season, so over his Jr/Sr year, if he averages what you say, Jon ban me for life.

I just don't understand what people are seeing / not seeing with Woodbury.

In my eyes, it's pretty clear that he has a massive upside, and he is very close to putting everything together...which is difficult for a seven footer to do at any point during college. Most big men peak later in their careers.

Both him and Gabe are starting to refine their offense, and also work hard on defense (Gabe gets lost a bit more than Woody, but he alters shots down low when he's in position). Don't see how you could be upset with their development. Bigs take time.

Arguably the Purdue post guy is the best pure center in the Big 10. All we hear from the Purdue people is that he doesn't play hard all the time. Nobody has ever accused Woodbury of not working hard.

We should have interesting post play in the Purdue game.

From the Purdue people? Every game I have watched with Purdue commentators, like Dakich, talk about how AJ can be the best player in the BIG if he plays "motivated" not sure what that means. Fact is he is a lazy player who tries when he wants. You can't keep saying he doesn't work hard time after time, just admit he is lazy.

I love watching woody -- his footwork is sound, he's a battler, and his confidence is growing

a year from now, with a little more muscle and experience, and he's going to be very efficient and effective

Perhaps not so much finesse in terms of a dislike for mixing it up (i.e. soft), but rather finesse in that he cannot rely upon explosive power and athleticism to get baskets like Shaq, Amare Stoudemire (pre-injury), or Dwight Howard. Rather, he has to rely upon a combination of skills and deception. There are some pretty tough dudes who have had a lot of success who some would say have a "finesse" post game (Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Kevin McHale, Rik Smitz, etc.).

With all that said, he is still somewhere in between that line.

which does not bode well for mr. hammons

Especially when your nickname is Joe Barely Cares. :)

Aren't these synonymous?

I'm sure Hammons would take a 10 year NBA career averaging 18 & 8.

And, part of (arguably) the worst trade ever in the NBA. :)

June 9, 1980: Traded by the Boston Celtics (as a future 1980 1st round draft pick) with a 1980 1st round draft pick (Rickey Brown was later selected) to the Golden State Warriors for Robert Parish and a 1980 1st round draft pick (Kevin McHale was later selected).
