Woodbury Video

Jon, why are you so sure Basabe is going to get 25 mins next year? He's barely getting 20 this year and that's with no real alternatives to replace him. I think he will be closer to 10 mins a game next year.

I will take as much of that as you are willing to put up ;)

If Mel is the type of athlete who can use negative ink and doubters as motivation, which most of the good ones can, I think we'll see a different player next year. The bench is the biggest motivating factor, and he's already been sent there. He sees White and McCabe blossoming somewhat at his expense...with two more bigs coming in that are not stiffs.

He knows he can do it...so if he gets his head right, he'll be right in the mix. If not, then I would guess he's not long for Iowa.

we need to get this kid in high post and get him to face basket and make plays passing for us.

Also regarding the dunking how many times does Tim Duncan dunk when he can layup dunk worth the same points right?

Lots of good basketball skills on both videos.

What I liked more than anything is his demeanor. You can tell a lot about a person by how they act on a basketball court. Never have seen him play and don't know him, but looks like he plays the game very unselfishly.

Woodbury is going to come in and start from day one. Kid is a top 50 recruit. We don't have a center. He is a center. Why would he get closer to 10 mins a game?

Leonard was highly ranked because he is a great athlete for his size, not because he had a well developed skill set. He's the exact opposite of Woody. Adam will average at least 15:01 minutes played, I'll take that pride from you.

Remember, you were also convinced Gatens would shoot 40% from three this season.

Lots to lke about his game, but what I find impressive is his recognition of a double team and that somebody has to be open on the weak side. He doesn't hold the ball and try go 1 on 2 or 3, but immediately looks for the open player and passes it. He has some nice post moves and makes quick decisions, all critical for a big.

To Jon's point about PT, I think it really comes down to who improves / doesn't over the summer. If Basabe gets a "chip on his shoulder" attitude and works his tail off, he could be a factor. If Olaseni continues to make strides, he could compete for PT and if Meyer or Woodbury comes in and goes Aaron White on us, either or both could be logging major minutes before conference play starts.

So he's already been benched and lost a lot of minutes to White and McCabe. We're bringing in two more talented big men and somehow his minutes are going to increase? I just don't see it. Basabe has no real offensive moves, he was a great hustle/garbage points/stat packing on a bad team guy last year, but as we've seen this year when he lacks energy he's not a productive guy to have on the floor.

His defense is average, especially when going up against bigger guys. I just see absolutely no reason to expect him to get 25 minutes next year while Woodbury gets only 10 and Meyer even less.

He is not an explosive athlete so that is he doesn't dunk that much. But he moves very well for a big guy, is a good passer, has a nice touch around the basket. I don't know what his jump shot looks like but if he can step out and knock down 10-15 footers that will be huge.

He obviously will need to continue putting on muscle but I think the determining factor for him getting a lot of minutes next year is how good his defense and conditioning are.

Although I would love to be proven wrong, I think I tend to agree with this.

I'm not saying that Woodbury is coming to come in and instantly be playing 25-30 minutes per game (ditto for Meyer), but they will certainly get some PT and I'm just not sold on Basabe being one of our go-to guys in the paint next year considering the other guys on the roster.

Basabe really can't seem to do much unless he's right there at the rim, and that's assuming he's not being guarded by someone who's taller than he is. He can't hit water from a boat if he's 10+ feet from the basket, and can't create off the dribble the way White or McCabe seem to be able to. Nor is he really strong enough to muscle the ball up on the rim the way someone like Greg Brunner could.

IMO Basabe really needs to develop his game this off-season if he's going to be playing 25+ minutes a game next year.

I was pretty impressed by his skills in this video. I was expecting a Jared
Reiners type-not that Jared wasn't any good-but he has more skills than Reiners.

In Fran's offense, a guy like Basabe runs the floor well (when he is on top of his game), can rebound well and be a big factor in transition. He is not a breakdown half court offensive guy, but Fran doesn't want his team to be that sort of offense.

A guy with Woodbury's size and skill set is going to make Basabe, as well as McCabe and White play much more comfortably in the offense. Basabe is not a center and looks out of place trying to play that way. Woodbury and hopefully Meyer are just what the doctor ordered for this team.

Yes, Fran wants a uptemp offense but post players need to have post moves they can go to when they are given the ball in a half court offense otherwise they will be ineffective for a lot of the time because even uptempo offenses don't get a ton of points on fast breaks. Plus they play teams like Wisconsin and Michigan State that are not going to allow you to run on them all day. Teams have to able to score in the half court offense and Basabe has a very limited skill set.

+1. Just because Fran wants up-tempo doesn't mean that the team isn't going to have to execute a half-court offense. It's not 40 minutes of fast breaks and layup drills.

+1. I've been saying this all season. We simply don't have a legit C on the team but once we do, White, Basabe and McCabe are going to be allowed to flow back to their more suitable positions (PF for McCabe and Basabe and Wing for White).

We will also have a legit shot blocker in the middle so teams will be less inclined to dribble drive to the middle of the paint.

Having a true C is going to pay huge dividends all around. Woodbury, Meyer and Olaseni will man the C position with McCabe and Basabe at the PF and White will move to the wing.

I really like Woodbury's game and think you guys got a stud. Is he a big time athlete? Of course not but he doesn't need to be. On defense his length alone will cause problems for other teams and on offense he score over either shoulder. That's HUGE. He will play more than 10 minutes a game. That's not even up for debate. Hell Aaron White plays more than 10 minutes a game and he's not Woodbury good by any means

While I like his offensive game, I think the fact that he is permanently anchored to the floor will limit his shot blocking ability (even at 7 foot). That being said, I am still very excited to see him on the floor next season.

Completely different players.

Aaron White is the third best freshman in the big ten.

But I agree Woodburys size in the middle alone will warrant 20 minuets a game minimum.

Regardless of how good Basabe/McCabe/White do or dont play none of them are centers.
