Woodbury Video

To bad he won't get to guard any 6'2 post players in the big ten like he was guarding in some of those clips.

Leonard was highly ranked because he is a great athlete for his size, not because he had a well developed skill set. He's the exact opposite of Woody. Adam will average at least 15:01 minutes played, I'll take that pride from you.

Remember, you were also convinced Gatens would shoot 40% from three this season.

Exactly, Leonard has nothing to do with Adam Woodbury. If they were not both white guys no one would be making the comparison.

Woody is allot further along development wise is more physical, but as you said is not nearly as athletic. If Woodbury had Leonards athleticism he would be a one and done player.

Woodbury has a polished post game and he is already adept at creating and absorbing contact to get his shots off, which is key. He also has a very high bball IQ and an aggressive attitude.

I doubt the big ten is going to phase Woodbury from a physical standpoint, hes already knows how to play against guys who are more athletic.

He was MVP of the NBA camp which is the best of the best in the country.

Went head to head with the best center recruits in the country and was named MVP of the whole camp.

Keep that in mind.

Highschool is a different animal. You can't do much if you don't have some decent guards to get you the ball and keep the defense honest.

Jon, if you think that Basabe will play just because he runs the floor better than Woodbury than by that logic so will Olesani. The truth is you don't need all 5 guys running to be a running team. If that were the case Fran wouldn't have even recruited Adam. Plus in the Big ten play you maybe get 8-10 points from fast breaks per game and most of them are only 1 or 2 guards getting a run out.

What will ultimately dictate if Basabe gets on the court is if he can start finishing around the rim better when he is contested in the half-court. I am assuming his energy level will be better next year or he won't play at all. But even if he has great energy, if he doesn't finish around the rim than he won't and shouldn't play more than the other bigs on the roster.

There are allot of problems with Basabe right now, hes not finishing well but allot of that is he is not getting in position to get good shots.

Last year he got the ball in deep, this year teams are pushing him off the block, and when he does get good position the guards refuses to feed the post.

He is not getting after it on the glass as well this year either, that led to allot of his points last year.

I didn't say he wasn't any good. I just said it would be nice if he could still go against post players the size of big ten point guards.

While I like his offensive game, I think the fact that he is permanently anchored to the floor will limit his shot blocking ability (even at 7 foot). That being said, I am still very excited to see him on the floor next season.

Is he actually even 7'1" or even 7'? Maybe he's more like 6' 11"? Player's heights are always exaggerated these days.

I just saw the first video. Woodbury is a 7'1" kid who runs well and is skilled, but if you want dunks, White will have to be your guy. Woodbury is skilled versus explosive and so I think what he will offer is unique (not on this team currently) but it may not relate to a lot of points/explosive plays in his first year.

+1

Never going to be explosive, but has a good skill set, can use both hands, has good touch around the rim, and shows nice form on his shot. I'm not trying to be overly negative here, but I'm honestly not sure how much he will contribute in his four years at Iowa. I hope I'm wrong and probably am, cause it is hard to tell from 2 min of video, but he will have a hard time matching up with other bigs, just based on the fact he seems athletically challenged. Again,I hope I eat alot of crow on this, but the video doesn't lie. If Gabe can ever develope an offensive skill set his athleticism will earn him the starting spot over Woodbury. Now you can rip me apart.

Your just really underestimating what a 7'1 true post player brings to the table.

Most teams will have a much harder time matching up with him than vice versa.

I hope so. I would love to be wrong on this.

Time will tell but also remember that every B1G coach took a pass on White except us. I'm not going to question Fran's recruiting. Plus, Roy Williams wanted him and I don't think anyone questions his recruiting credentials.

Love the attitude and court awareness. Check out the hustle after his own block at 2:45 in the first video.

I'll go back further in Hawk history, I don't see the early clumsiness of Jepson, Earl or Lohaus in Woody's game. He's smooth and coordinated already. Also, he generally keeps the ball high receiving interior passes, showing little of that common tendency of young bigs to gather the ball low and/or dribble in the paint, where quick D-1 defenders can eat it up.

Bodes well for frosh PT above 10 minutes-per-game, IMHO.

As Gary Coleman used to say "What you talking about Willis?" He goes against the country's best high school players and is named most valuable player out of all of them and you don't think he will be able to contribute at Iowa??????

Basabe,
Seriously needs to work on his work ethic around the basket. Anyone who happened to DVR the last game can go back and just watch Basabe. Don't follow the ball just watch him. He should be bouncing around inside of that lane trying to either work for shot or getting into position for a strong rebound.
He was doing neither most of the game. If he doesn't figure it out by next year he will be sitting on the bench watching McCabe showing him how to do it. Loved the kid last year. On more than one occasion announcers said be was only second to Sullinger as a freshman. Obviously we will be deep at the post positions next season and there has got to be an odd man out unless Meyer red shirts but what good would that do since most of the post players will be around for two more years. Let's not forget about Marble. Will he be playing the point until Gessel gets his game on? The. What after that? Will he be competing with White at the three position or with Oglesby at the two........what a mess.........what a beautiful mess to have. This is going to be fun!!!!!

Roy Williams, Tubby Smith, Bo Ryan, Johnny Dawkins, Tony Bennett and Thad Matta say "hello". Or maybe they had scholarships available to waste on a non-contributor.

Not going to rip you apart, you are entitled to your own opinion, but you obviously are lacking in scouting bball talent. Woodbury will dominate before his career is over, and it's because of the ability to use both hands so well and his size. Imagine him with 30-40 more lbs of bulk.

Like I said, it is hard to tell from the video, but honestly watch it and tell me you were impressed with his physical ability. I guess I should'nt have wrote contribute. I just don't think he looks like a starter in the B1G. I guess I remember watching Jess Settles, Russ Millard and guys like that who were physcial from day one. I'm glad he chose Ia and hope he develops into an AA.

The problem with the videos is that he doesn't NEED to be physical against the competition. The Camp video showed a little more physicality. Imagine being 7' and playing against 6'3" guys all the time. Most nights its turn and shoot. I agree with you that he will have to develop some strength and physical attributes to play at the next level, but he may already posess that ability and just doesn't need to use it. He will be a all B1G performer IMO.

He is already stronger than White is and look how well white is doing. Brad Lohaus could only wish he was as advanced as Woodbury is during his senior year in high school. Look how well Brad turned out his senior year in college under the excellent coaching of Tom Davis. If he avoids major injuries Woodbury will be a fan favorite of hawkeye fans every where. I hope Fran can find another seven footer in the next class after him or at least within two years behind Woodbury. If Fran builds it they will come.

Lohaus was a McDonalds all american, so I don't think you are correct in your analysis D.
