WILL IOWA START A HOCKEY PROGRAM?

The point I was getting at with being in the Big Ten is that these kids can take on the powerhouse schools that didn't want them, not that the B1G has a similar allure the one it holds for football and basketball.
Sure, they can take on the powerhouse schools that didn't want them and get **** pounded playing in front of 50 people at a mall food court ice rink. It could work.

Yeah, I think he's onto something. DePaul University is in the epicenter of top 100 basketball recruits. They play in a historically very strong basketball conference, the Big East (which has been weakened) and in an arena that is 45 minutes (without much traffic) from campus, but when they went out and told kids that they'll get to play against Georgetown, Syracuse, Villanova, UConn, etc., they landed a ton of great talent. Of course, with the restructuring of the league, they can't say that anymore and so now their basketball team stinks. Oh wait, nevermind, DePaul basketball has pretty much always sucked and their conference affiliation was irrelevant.

I can't imagine how we've ever had a good football team. I mean, all those kids that the big schools didn't want so obviously sucked *** and were destined to be **** pounded.

Wait.....

Because there's rampant corruption in AAU hockey and hockey recruiting, and the upper midwest is the heart of it all.

This is a boffo idea. The expense it would take to create and maintain a hockey program could bleed off excess Iowa Athletics profits from football, marketing and, once again, men's basketball. Barta could use an "empty pockets" appeal to donors with a straight face.

Wait.....

Um, we've had a "good" football team maybe 3 or 4 times in the past 30 years. We've had a team bordering on slightly above average to slightly below average pretty much the rest of that time. Personally, instead of funding what would almost certainly be a perennially bottom dwelling hockey team, I'd rather funnel assets into making sure the football and basketball facilities are near top notch and ensuring that we have a fund to pay assistant coaches so we can get assistants other than those who were fired from Texas.

If you have evidence of rampant corruption in AAU basketball, you should write a story about it and get it in front of ESPN. You've got to do something to get noticed, unless that is, you want to write about CIML girls basketball for the rest of your life.

Creating a hockey program would put Fran on par with Tom Izzo and some of the other B1G legends. While he probably wouldn't be able to drive a zamboni, BTN could use his mad face in future hockey promos.

Hey double H, tell me where you are coming up with 50 to 100 million dollars to build a hockey arena and i will quit pointing out how stupid this idea is.

Your posts show you have no idea what has been talked about. I never said this was going to happen. As I did say, it would be great but it won't happen. If your whole point is to show how stupid this idea is then you really aren't trying to add any relative information as everyone posting knows its not a feasible idea due to facilities, etc.

I guess that was a pretty good guess on my part as to what the new Hawkeye Hockey arena will cost. Let's get going with the fundraising right away.

I've said this won't happen because of the financials. Recognizing that it's not financially feasible, and saying the program would fail because Iowa wouldn't get good enough players, are two drastically different arguments.

If everyone knows it isn't feasible to do this, why are posters still saying we should or could do this?

They are not different arguments. No arena = no good players = no program = a terrible idea that should no longer be considered.

It's a fantasy. Obviously, some of us like hockey and wish Iowa had it.

We know it's not feasible to fire Ferentz, but that hasn't stopped it from being a pretty common topic on the football board.

Actually, it's not. Unless you go all the way with funding for the facilities etc., you will never get the players to come and never compete. That's what the argument was for new football and basketball facilities was, right? It's even more important for a specialized sport like hockey. There's a reason why UNO has hockey, but UNL doesn't. Unless you have lived in an environment where hockey is actually almost as important as the high revenue sports, it's hard to comprehend.

If they decided to have a hockey program, they'd build an arena. It's not like Barta would say, "Hey, let's add hockey!" and then leave the team to play at Coral Ridge or Cedar Rapids indefinitely. They wouldn't create a program and have no intention of giving that program a facility.

Honestly, though, the only ways this will ever happen is if A) Some as of yet super donor covers the cost of building a facility, or B) They add hockey when the day comes that we need a new arena for basketball.
