WILL IOWA START A HOCKEY PROGRAM?

Some reason this is in the basketball forum? That aside, Iowa is a not a big hockey state. Can't imagine this does anything but loses money. Also, if you start a men's team you need to start a women's team.

You'd be surprised. There are five USHL teams (Des Moines, CR, Dubuque, Sioux City and Waterloo) and the Wild. There are also several MHSHL (high school) teams in the state. Obviously, it's not like Minnesota. But I think it would catch on.

I live in MN with 3 kids playing hockey. We've gone to Coral Ridge to watch the Hawks. It's a great sport to watch in person.

Regarding recruiting and putting a team together, MN has the highest number of HS players in the nation. This year alone, 133 players have committed to D1 programs. There are over 300 players from MN in D1 this season and 500 at the D3 level. There are almost 450 Minnesotans playing JR hockey this season. There are almost 100 in the NHL, that's like 1 out of every 6.

For Iowa to have an arena, it would take pretty hefty private donations to build. It wouldn't surprise me if people stepped forward for such an endeavor, I'm just not holding my breath it would ever happen. It would be awesome, but I'll believe it when I see it...

I very much doubt there would be much interest from a hockey ignorant fan base to see a fledgling Hawkeye hockey program get smokef by the likes of the badgers and gophers every night (which i assure you would happen for years to come). Plus the no arena and womens equity question makes this a non starter.

PS, Baudette MN is a bigger hockey town than Cedar Rapids is.

It would be a struggle to get it going as this state does not produce many D1 prospects. But there is a strong hockey following in this state and anything can happen once you start making scholarships available to hockey players at Iowa. I am not a hockey fan at all but have been to a Black Hawks game in Waterloo and Young arena was rocking.

What do you expect Iowa to be a title contender immediately? That's not even feasible. You have to start somewhere.

The idea of Iowa with no facilities, no program history and no fan base going up against some of the true powers in college hockey and being anything but a laughing stock is like thinking the Coe college football team should start competing in the SEC.

I visit Baudette a few times a year. Clearly you do not. Maybe per capita there are more hockey fans as is the case with any Minnesota town. But Baudette is a tiny town. In the winter the population on the lake is much bigger than in the town. You couldn't fill half the CR Ice Arena even if the whole town showed up every game.

Aside from Iowa sports.. The CR Rough Riders hockey team is the most popular team in Cedar Rapids.

No, pal, it won't catch on. First, hockey is very expensive to play. Second, it has major concussion and facial damage risk and many parents won't let their kids play (not a problem in places where the gene puddle is thin, like Minnesota). Third, in normal years it doesn't get cold enough in Iowa for ponds and small lakes to steadily freeze over so the only place to skate is in a facility and there will never be a significant number of facilities in a place like Iowa because they are expensive and don't make much money. You see, back when I was in HS about 20 years back, the U had two kids on the Bucs (one of whom is still kicking around the NHL - probably the only Iowan to last in the NHL for nearly a decade) and peeps were liek "Oh man, hockey will totes catch on in Iowa" but when I just checked their roster, the Bucs still had just two kids from Iowa. It ain't gonna happen, dude.

That is my point. Baudette is indeed a tiny town, and still it is much more a hockey town than cedar rapids.

Maybe you dont recognize the source of my user name. I know a thing or two about both college hockey and northern minny.

Who says it has to catch on at the high school level for a program to be successful? We're surrounded by by several states that are loaded with hockey talent. Having a strong high school base absolutely helps, but you don't HAVE to have it. Hell, look at Iowa's field hockey team. You don't see Iowa high schoolers playing field hockey, do you? But Iowa has one of the top programs in the nation.

Lakes around Iowa City-Cedar Rapids are getting reports around 12-18 inches of ice this week.

Lake Macbride is the only one that fluctuates because of its natural springs keeping the ice soft.

The only difference is i dont think there are high level field hockey programs in any high schools. It is just a made up sport designed to fill gender equity programs.

So you have been to a USHL hockey game in Cedar Rapids to know this for a fact? I am not much into Hockey, I watched the Stanley Cup when the Black Hawks won it and I do enjoy to watch Olympic hockey but I cannot call myself a fan. But when I attended a game in Waterloo I was amazed at how much people get into it. I think there is room for 1 D1 school in the state of Iowa. If a D1 school can make it in places like Pennsylvania and Nebraska then why not Iowa? Obviously there is not enough home grown talent to feed a program but there is enough talent in Minnesota and the Dakota's for Iowa to recruit in. It is not much different than any other sport Iowa competes in, almost all of the sports rely on out of state recruits. Like I posted before once you start giving away scholarships anything can happen.

Of course i have been to Rider games. Does not change the fact that it is laughable to call CR a hockey town.

Wow. You know why Iowa has a field hockey team, right? It's because 100% of the participants are from out of state so the athletic department can juice scholarship amounts by covering out of state tuition. Who are the other strong field hockey programs? I couldn't tell you because I don't care and no one else does, it's just a Title IX make work program. Penn State might be able to build an okay hockey program, but Iowa will never, ever, ever, ever be able to out recruit Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maine, Michigan, Michigan State, the Boston schools, etc. And we're not "surrounded" by states with hockey talent - Wisconsin and Minnesota are loaded with talent, but the kids there want to play for big programs, not some startup Iowa team - the other states around us have basically nothing. Jesus, I shudder to think of seeing Iowa constantly losing in anything to Mankato State, UM Duluth and North Dakota and that is exactly what would happen in hockey.

Hey, dont be grouping North Dakota with those other schools. The only reason wiscy and minny left the WCHA to join the BoneG hockey conference was to quit losing to the Sioux.
