We can stop with the KF hate

40 bowls, 80 teams. Making a bowl ain't what it was 30 years ago. It doesn't even require a winning record. Last year 9 B1G teams went to bowls. You don't even have to finish in the top half of the conference. The only way you don't make a bowl in a major conference is to have a garbage season.
I've brought it up before. The 1976 Iowa State team coached by Earle Bruce was probably one of the top fifteen teams in the country. But they played in a loaded big eight, there were only about a dozen bowls, and they got shut out.

Interesting side note. One of the reasons Hayden Fry left North Texas was the frustration of no bowl invites. His last two teams were 10-1 and 9-2 and stayed home. He wanted to coach somewhere that a good record would always be rewarded with a bowl invite. (He also was both AD and HC at NTSU and wanted to coach without having AD duties.)

I can certainly see more bowls than just the original New Year's Day group. But 40?...come on.

Especially when so many of them are sparsely attended. Even the Outback Bowl had plenty of empty seats.

Did Luther Blue play on that team? They had a high octane offense, IIRC, beat Nebraska?

Yes and yes. Blue had a kickoff return for a TD in the win over Nebraska that truly put that team on the map. The defense forced double digit turnovers that day.

Not sure if Jimmy Johnson was on that staff. He may have been there earlier, in the Johnny Majors era.

I remember catching some of it on the radio while I was pheasant hunting. Very exciting game. I think it was a Husker broadcast and they assumed they would win...but one voice said, I am a bit worried, high octane offenses often win out. I don't think Kirk was tuning in.

There are now at least a half dozen specialty sports channels not even including the conference and league specific channels. ESPN, EPSN2, ESPNU, ESPNNews, CBS Sports, NBCSN, FS1, FS2. There is insatiable demand for sports programming and the TV rights are where all the money is. There is so much air time to fill that women's basketball and volleyball are routinely broadcast now. Given the breakdown of the systemic sexism that kept women's basketball off of TV for decades, I expect that within 10 years the WNBA will be as big as the NBA and if we don't see max salaries in the WNBA of at least 20 million per year, it will be abundantly clear that our society has a long way to go on closing the gender pay gap.

I agree with this but only in the event that the WNBA's revenue is on par with what the NBA is generating. I have nothing against closing the gender pay gap, but I'll always feel that first and foremost it should be about the revenue being generated and equal distribution to the athletes whether male or female. The founding father's of the NBA paved the way and made nowhere near what today's players make so I feel as professional women's leagues continue to grow and expand so will their wages.

Never had hate him. Critical of him but in today's politically correct and feelings era must me hate. Stand up guy, someone you'd want be friends with. Just to conservative with the play not to lose mentality. Outdated offense....boring.

Die hard fans buddy. Their, their own worst enemy.

Don't let it bug you too much....OSU will whip either one.

I agree and I see the Big Ten taking home a National Title this year. The SEC is going to see what it’s like to play a team that can score AND ALSO PLAY DEFENSE.

One would think that Kirk would look at his loses and realize that his offensive philosophy has cost him wins along the way. But no one is forcing him to change anything about his approach to games, especially tougher opponents; not the AD and certainly not the donors.

To me this is where the word disaster could be used. It’s a disaster for such a great and loyal fan base to be so loyal and have ying yangs who seem indifferent to putting expectations on the table instead of just five tons of money.

Biggest Hurdle....if you make a decision to change, you are admitting that what you were doing wasn't working...pride is very powerful, seldom comes with self-awareness, genuineness or transparency. It is tough to win in this league. Need to clean a few things up. Get a break.

Very well put and so true. We will call this the “Administrative Iowa Way.”

If Iowa loses to Minnesota, Illinois, and Nebraska, heads will roll, but none of the coaches, just the heads of fans on Hawkeye boards.

6-6 will lead to a lot of splainin about bad luck, that's football, we played hard, going to a bowl, proud of the players and coaches.

Lol, you exaggerate just a little.

Haven’t you noticed how THEY for the most part have been quiet. Most of them have to be dissatisfied at this point. Lose to Minnesota and anyone else this season and we are not just in the back seat of a four door sedan we are in the last seat of a school bus............... and THEY know it.

What does any of this have to do with KF Hate?

My point is that when things are rough, people tend to get out the pitchforks and blame everything on the head coach. When obviously not everything is wrong but rather needs adjusted. They attack from every angle, and it's just stupid.

In this case though I think a lot of the frustration is that there's very little adjusting being done.

On Bowl Games, Again...This is not about you. It is about two issues. 1. Extended practice time focused on reps for young players. 2. The desire of the players to experience a nice trip and for most of them, one last football game before they move on to the next stage in their lives. OK? Thanks!
