Wait...so could we end up playing Bama in the Citrus now

I think we'd lose by a score 9-27, and that's if Duncan doesn't sit out the game cuz he's turning pro.

I'd agree with TK. Our Defense should hold Bama below their scoring average, but that would still be a much higher score than what our Offense could muster.

We have a barometer of where Iowa is every year when we play Wisconsin. That’s the level we are trying to get to and we aren’t there yet.

Bama, Clemson, and Georgia are on a while different level folks, and that’s not Iowa’s fault they just simply can’t recruit like that.

I’ve been one of the most positive posters here in terms of where Iowa football is and what I believe to be an improving talent level, but I also understand that Alabama is a completely different animal and getting whacked by them does nothing for us as a program.

I dont disagree with you, but I guess I look at it like there are really a couple of distinct different ways KF can go. The first is to play sound, fundamental football, limit the mistakes and win a low to moderately scored game. I think in KF's world that is a formula that beats every team on our schedule except Ohio State. And for the most part I think it is sound thinking.

But there are the few times where I think I KF knows we are going to have to score points. It's all done within the same offense, just a little riskier in play calling and philosophy. I think this is what a lot of fans are wanting to see because we have shown we are capable of it in the past. I personally dont blame KF for not opening up the offense because statistically against our west division opponents it works, even against Wisconsin because we have lost quite a few games to them because of errors on our part.

I think against Alabama KF would know that we need to score points. It would be the greatest test. Maybe we get trucked. Ok, then we get trucked. Maybe we play it safe, shorten the game and lose in a close one similar to penn state. But maybe we come out like we did against OSU a couple years ago and Minnesota this year or even Nebraska and keep our foot on the gas. And maybe we win.

Then maybe KF will decide that before he goes out he is going to go down swinging and losing games to fellow top 15 teams by less than a touchdown sucks, and he would just as soon lose by 30 than by 3. Because at this point that's what we all want right?

It would not be a good barometer. Whoever gets Bama this year will get them with the backup QB, a ton of missing starters and probably 70% effort. If you want a barometer against Bama, it has to be in one of those early season games in Charlotte, Florida, Dallas or Atlanta.

I see your point but honestly I really dont think so. Not with Saban. That guy is way too meticulous and detailed. If anything he is going to want to make an example out of us. Everyone associated with that program demands dominance and you have that added part of the cap one bowl that I know he hasn't forgotten.

My philosophy is this.
Remember the taxslayer bowl? Remember the Rose bowl? We have lost bowl games to worse teams then Alabama.
I figure it this way, if I absolutely have to fight I'm going down swinging. I certainly don't hope that if I have to fight they give me the littlest weakest opponent. Because you go toe to toe with a big boy and even if you lose, you will be respected. That taxslayer and rose? There was zero respect for that.

I do not care who or where we play. Just get the 10th win. That goes in the record books. Well, one exception to my preference...I want to go to the Alamo Bowl every year.

Maybe, but I guarantee you they respect us when the dust settles. (So would the college football world) Unlike Stanford did.
Kind of took a little game against OSU and Urban now knows.
That should be a show, Urban knows. Kinda catchy.

I would LOVE to see Iowa face Alabama in the Citrus Bowl! If there was ever a year Iowa could legitimately beat Alabama this is the year. Iowa would be happy to be playing in that bowl while Alabama players will be disappointed and many of them looking to be drafted probably wouldn't play.

When you are recruited to play football at Alabama the expectation is to be playing for the NC every year, not playing in a 2nd tier bowl.

What is the point of playing a team that will either a) roll us, or, b) have half their starters not playing?

That's lose-lose, IMO.

Because it's still Nick Saban and Alabama, I also don't believe they would "roll us". I guaranteed the players would be pumped to play Alabama, much more than they would be playing a 7-5 team.

I’d much rather lose to Alabama, a massive brand name with a huge following, in prime recruiting territory on News years day, then beat Arizona state or another sleepy mediocre Pac-12 team that no one cares about on a random Friday night with no one watching.

alabama is a brand name.
No. If for some reason the game came down to penalty kicks of Duncan versus their kicker, we would win.

Iowa has much better special teams and a better defense. Now...Alabama’s offensive skill players are from another planet. That would be a problem.

man you would think every single player on Bama's team was 1st team all American and they could beat most NFL teams. What a joke.

Playing Bama would be fun..........as long as we don't get blown out.

Shades of Mississippi St, our offense probably can't move the ball against a tough D, so it's up to the D and probably turnovers to do it for us. Let AJ Epenesa shine one last time on a ntional stage.

KF has coached against Saban before, both LSU and Michigan St, he would know what he's in for.

Personally, I'd rather play in the Holiday Bowl but the we play against Pac 12 speed and that's been a problem for us.

Bring it on, whomever and wherever it is, let's go for that 10th W.

Well that’s great you’re entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion you’re wrong. Do you realize how dumb it sounds that we just squeaked by Illinois and Nebraska and now we want to play Alabama? That would be like Minny fans saying we are ready for the playoffs after knocking off PSU only to inevitably lose to Iowa and UW and fall to 18th in the rankings. If Minny has Texas A&M’s schedule they’d have 5 losses.

Iowa would be a three TD underdog against Bama, and more often than not Vegas knows what they are talking about.

Thank you for making this point. I'm glad Iowa has hit 9 wins but some people need to keep perspective.

Illinois and Nebraska are not good programs and Iowa had their hands full with both of them. Nebraska flat outplayed Iowa for 3 quarters last week.

Iowa couldn't move the ball with any consistency against either team. And their DLs are some of the worst in the nation. Iowa's DL really struggled with both teams running games as well.

After watching those games, you have to living in a black and gold world to think Iowa can hang with Alabama.

My hope for next year is that we have a QB that can move the chains with the game on the line.

As with anything else in life, you see things how you want to see things. It's your bias.
