VanLaere: Iowa Basketball and the Postseason

I would hate to see Iowa play in the CBI or CTI...whatever they are, I couldn't even bring myself to look back at the beginning of the thread to make sure I had the acronyms right. It's embarrassing. It's bad enough we spend enough time on these message boards, do we honestly want to break down our chances of getting into a third or fourth tier "post-season" and then waste more time breaking down our opponents leading up to these games? I don't want to hear the argument about more practices, more experience, building into next year...blah, blah, blah. Honest to god, it's not that important. Let the season end. Let the players go back to being college students full-time for an extra week, let us move on and not have to break down the most mindless minutia for the umpteenth time on these message boards. I've been a fan since Carfino was hittin' and stickin' and I can't stomach the thought of the University of Iowa participating in these tournaments. I get the NIT, there is some history there and the tournament generally is a consolation prize for a winning season. But let it end there. Please, please let it end there. This is a personal plea for no more posts acknowledging whatever it is that falls somewhere below the NIT but above the conclusion of a season.

if i actually enjoy watching the hawks play games, does that make me a better fan then you?

Let's pretend for a minute this is true. A practice where you are preparing to play an opponent will always be more meaningful than some guys just showing up to work out and work on a few things.

It is true. However, do you really think preparing to play a Horizon League slug in March will better prepare the team for competition in November?

I don't.

hey Ghost, Miles Simon thinks playing in any postseason tournament is good for Iowa. Why don't you give him a call tomorrow and tell him how wrong he is, I'm sure you don't have anything to do tomorrow since you don't have a job you ******* hipster.

They get 20 hours / week countable activities during the season.
They get 8 hours / week countable activities in the off-season.

That's a HUGE difference.

Coaches and players don't have practices in the off-season like they do in during the season.

No. It's false.

I have no idea who Miles Simon is, and furthermore, I don't care what he thinks. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to try on some tight, vintage t-shirts and trim my ironic sideburns.

Yeah, I know the hours change, and I actually mentioned it on page 10. I never said that they get the exact same practice all year as they did during the season. I thought it was implicit that they didn't, which is why I mentioned the restrictions originally.

In fact, I remember the NCAA had to change the rules after Illinois pulled some crap where they had the basketball team stretch on the football field during halftime as a "Team skills activity".

And it seems that you, again, have ignored what I have been saying, only to bring it up later.

I missed your post. But looking back at it, you are wrong.
8 hours a week total for "counted activities" - they don't put together practices like those during the season.

So to further explain, no, the players don't get to continue to practice in the sense of the word in the off-season. This is where you are wrong. The team does not have practices in the off-season.
