Utah State

If you were dubious about this Iowa team you were right. Tonight was brutal to watch. Lack of rebounding, absolute nothing from 3 point range, too many turnovers, and lineups that didn't work well.

You got to put the blame on Fran for not having a plan B. There is no leadership at the point guard position. Helter/Skelter was the only description for it.

If things don't improve and attendance is down further Goetz will have to make some changes.

Agree with Little River Band- it's time for a cool change

It’s recruiting. That’s the failure with the past few teams. Which admittedly is on coaches, but also admittedly things are different in the NIL era. Iowa is further behind the curve in NIL than it is in football.

Think of this…

For the past decade and a half we’ve always seemed to have at least one and sometimes two dominating players, and a supporting cast of guys who were pretty dangerous.

Just from the Uthoff era on you had White, Uthoff, Gesell, Woodbury, Jok, Wieskamp, Bohannon, Cook, Garza, Murray, Murray. After that it stopped and stopped big time. It’s no coincidence that we went from what we had to the Bad News Bears as soon as NIL became a thing. None of the players I listed above other than possibly Gesell, Woody, and Wieskamp would have even visited Iowa, and Weezy would’ve gotten stolen away by NIL after his first good season. The days of this program having Garza or Murray are doneski. Better accept it. Fran is damn good at finding underrated players and turning them into that, but have you guys even listened to his pressers?

The guy is deflated. I have no doubt he loves his players, but let’s be honest…Fran wants to move to Indy. Closer to his boys, his wife hates it here, and they both have ND connections. Then you take the one coaching advantage he’s always had (being able to find guys under the radar and get them to Iowa) and yank it out from under his feet in the form of NIL..I don’t blame him. He owes this program nothing.

But…this program is cooked and this is the kind of ragtag roster you’re going to keep seeing. You can’t take guys like what we have now and turn them into the players I listed before. And even if you did…say good bye the following year because we don’t have the money to keep them.

I actually thought our PG was one of the only highlights from that game. Brock Harding had his best game as a Hawkeye. What a lot of people don't realize is this is Brock's first real playing time right? He hardly played last season and this is what, his 6th game of his career where he's played significant minutes? He's actually a bright spot from that game IMO, everyone around him let him down.

We couldn't afford to take him off the floor in the 2nd half, that is encouraging to me.

Rebounding is going to be a thing with this team, it just is, they are limited in the post, so I don't expect that to change much.

Iowa didn't hit shoots, it lost. But this loss didn't look like previous year losses imo (lack of PG and poor defense). That was 2 teams that were scoring 90+ a game.

I can accept this ... Loss was 100% on the Sandforts / Dix trio ... They simply didn't produce up to par.
Not a shocker, totally expected from time to time. However, Iowa can't survive all 3 at the same time.

You're right about the overall rebounding. Saw that when I watched them at the exhibition. Still, it can be overcome by opportunistic boards and scoring like they should.

I'm mostly concerned about Josh falling off a cliff lately and Dembele / Traore inconsistency. I get Josh bummed hand but he looks completely out of sorts, discouraged and soft. He can't wait to go on a February burst. He needs to straighten out his head now because team needs 15 / 5 / 5 from him each game. As for the 3's trying to play 4 and 5 ... Unrealistic to ask for too much but Dembele and Traore athleticism should provide 15 / 8 every game.

As said above ... Didn't expect this one. Now they've got to get 1 back vs either Utah or ISU (predicted losses). Still have them in NIT, but less than 20% chance to dance if lose both Utah and ISU.

Skip the USC Upstate bullshit tomorrow…they will win that by double digits.

After that the schedule goes as follows:

vs Northwestern
@Michigan
vs ISU

In your opinion, can they win 2 of the next 3?

I think Iowa goes 0 and 3. Right now Iowa is a collection of players and not a team. Earlier I expressed that there isn't any leadership from the point guards. What I mean by that is, it takes forever for the lineup/s to figure out what set to run and it is typically the point guard that initiates the set play. By now Fran should have it down to 8 or fewer players getting the majority of the minutes, he doesn't.

I watched some of the ISU vs Auburn game and Iowa is going to get ass whipped by ISU. They will lose on the road at Michigan. They have a chance against NW if they can make shoots. Peyton Sandfort is not a reliable shooter, he is either hot or cold from game to game. I haven't seen him shoot well this season.

NwU = W
Michigan seems to be a lot like Iowa. Due to being on the road, gotta lean loss.
ISU is very likely loss unless ISU has bad shooting night and Iowa shoots 45%+ from 3.

If Iowa goes 2-1 or 3-0 over that stretch they'll be ranked. - if they 1-2 they'll still be in pretty good shape, if they go 0-3 they are going to be in a big hole but they've started 0-2 the last 2 seasons in conference and turned it around. ISU looked really good last night but had huge lulls of not being able to score and had some pretty poor perimeter defense in the 2nd half. If our game was a neutral court, I'd say ISU by 10+ - being that it's at home and in a gym where Iowa typically shoots well, it's the in-state rival and Hawks are being overlooked a little, I really like Iowa's spot for that game. All the pressure will be on ISU and frankly, these early season rankings typically have a lot to flesh out still right? I mean, Creighton got it's ass handed to them by NU at home last week... they aren't close to the 14th ranked team in the country right now and IMO, says more about Creighton than NU. Ya never know in a rivalry game and it seems like the home team has been the better team in this series as of late.

Yeah Harding and Freeman were studs and have bright futures. Harding is already exceeding my expectations. He keeps that up and he most certainly will.

The Sandforts on the other hand... When they aren't hitting shots they are damn near worthless and that game was exibit A to that. Now I've heard Payten has a sore wrist or whatever so if that's the case have some self Fn awareness and not shoot it so damn much. And that's still no excuse for his ole defense and never boxing anyone out for rebounds. I have no clue how he was a borderline NBA player. He's not athletic enough for it not even close.

Dix struggled too he had something not right with him and had he played a good game for him they coulda won still. Between him and the Sandforts having bad games and Dembele doing nothing it's just too much to overcome. Utah St isn't a super team but they aren't scrubs either.
