Unbelievable Fran Video

When a player who has three years remaining loses his job via injury to a player who has one year of eligibility, and the coach at the end of the year says the second player proved he deserved hands down to be the starter, and then the coach says recruiting a PG is priority, well the blood spatter writing is pretty much on the wall.

Whats your point? I try and TRY to give you the benefit of the doubt and think you just are ****** off like the rest of us that we have sucked for too long but then you turn around and make statements like this.

If you couldn't figure out for yourself that Cartwright was better than Cully from Day 1 then I can't help you figure out this game of basketball. Look back at my postings. I stated before the season started that Cully would be riding the bench and Bryce would be the starter. The injury accelerated the change but it was going to happen regardless.

Fran wants players that are going to start. Whats the point of having a roster full of reserves? We would never get any better. Cully wasn't going to start next year. Sure he would add depth at PG but we have a backup that did pretty good and will have a year under his belt heading into next year. Its obviously not ideal but you must always look forward.

If what was stated above was true about Cully then would you want that kind of personality on your team? I sure as hell wouldn't. The kid would be nothing but a thorn in my side and probably buzzing in the other players ear about PT which would create conflict. This team does not need conflict.

I would never beg a player to remain on my roster and if they were afraid of being recruited over then I would say the same thing that Fran did.

The funny thing (again assuming what was posted is true) then this makes me laugh: You're either in the gym this summer or you'll watch the guys that were when March comes around! - Cully Payne April 21st

What does this even mean? Are you saying that because you have positive thoughts that Iowa doesn't need to worry about the point guard situation?

The OP tried to tie some correlation between the last 6 yrs and injuries. That is just as irrelevant as us losing our leading scorer during the same span. Injuries are not a controllable item.

Quit looking into the past for future answers.

Probably his comment was reacting to 9yrs bring up woes we've had in the last 6 seasons...

We want players, not a PG that would provide depth at a position but not fit the team Fran is trying to build.

I get why people are buying this line, but seriously think of what this team would look like without Cartwright if something happened to him. It sucks to think about, but it is an incredibly relevant factor.

I think he was describing Payne's perspective of why he might want to transfer. Basically saying that Payne saw the writing on the wall.

Throw in one of the remaining PGs and it doesn't look much better. That is the point, right now, bringing in a warm body just for an insurance policy isn't worth it. I'm sure Fran could find a Jermain Davis type, but he'd rather get folks who will help the team.

Anytime that I hear Fran speak I am impressed. I am on the same page as others that are worried about the "what if" cartwright gets hurt factor. That could derail the train before it is to far down the track.

I was told that Cully went in to the office to complain about Fran recruiting over him and said he may look into transferring. Fran told him to bring in the papers and he would sign them without trying to talk Cully out of it at all.

Later, Payne saw Francis at the tennis center and turned around and went the complete opposite way so that he did not have to talk to him.

Cully, you will not be missed.

I really do not like having Marble as the sole backup though, because if any injury happens to Cartwright this will be a disaster of a season.

I heard the same thing.

Still, Cully was a good kid who gave as much effort as he probably could. He just didn't fit into this type of system...neither athletically nor strategically. And I started saying that pretty much the day of Caff's opening press conference. The same way I never felt Brust would fit into this system.

I feel much better about Iowa with Marble as a backup PG than I would have with Cully. I'm telling you now. There is a reason why we aren't recruiting just ANY point guard. And that's because the staff feels pretty confident about Marble. I think his progression is going to surprise a lot of people on this site next year. And I can't wait to hear everyone say..."Well I guess Fran knew what he was doing." :)

IF it went down like this, then I give credit to Cully for not airing this when he decided to transfer. It doesn't help him; he was wise enough, or got wise advise, not to burn bridges. Don't fault him for not fitting into Fran's system, he probably would not have been recruited by Fran. To say he won't be missed, while maybe factually accurate in context of Fran's system, is a bit of an icy remark to a kid who ended up in a program that didn't match his talents.

Caff had been givin his marching orders from Barta that no one was going to be encouraged to transfer away from the program. Regardless of their fit within the program.

Still, Caff wasn't going to beg Cully to stay. Especially when Cully was complaining about the recruitment of more competition. Even though I've heard conflicting accounts, I really think Cully was trying to bluff McCaffery a little with the transfer 'threat'. When McCaffery didn't flinch a bit, Cully saw the handwriting on the wall.

I am thinking 12345 owes caar an apology...

I agree. I apologize Caar, I interpreted your post incorrectly and I'm sorry.

BC getting hurt is a legit concern, but I don't think fans will be worried about it in a week or two. Just my opinion (don't read into it more than that).

More proof that 1 player can make a difference (Fran talking about UConn and Kemba Walker) "the rest of that team is fairly ordinary"

Well he has been playing at the Rec a lot lately and let's just say he is not known for being a "good" guy. He has not been shy in his criticism of the staff. Your opinion of these guys can change a lot when you actually see them interact in real life.

Marble has been looking thicker in the workouts which is nice, but he just isn't very quick which is my main worry when he shifts to the one.
