Unbelievable Fran Video

What you couldn't quite see in the video (I was about 5 feet away off to the side) was when he was asked about pulling another Bryce Cartwright out of the hat, Margaret got a huge grin on her face. She knows something I think.

For those who might not know Margaret, she in into the hoops she would know.

Thanks for clarifying on here! I saw your post on TOS and didn't know to what you were referring. Between her smile and Fran's smirk at that question, I think the Hawks have someone.

Actually, that was referring to an inside joke between Fran and Marg about a little role playing game they like to call Bonanza. Something about his Boss Cartwright and her Ponderosa or something.

:D Will they pass on their role playing secrets? The wife and I could spice it up a little!

I have that one down. Just watched 'Jedi' with the wife last weekend, so we made sure we had all the mannerism down. BTW, she hates it when I eat the live frog!

Thanks for sharing. I am puzzled about the not planning to sign a PG comment from the article the other day, but man, he has the definition of a poker face. He feels good about the situation and obviously knows what he is doing. Also like that he has set forth specific objectives for players with respesct to skill development, strength-conditioning and body fat.

Stay with me before you jump. The beginning of the video sounded early like Lick. In saying about recruits, I am positive Lick made a similar probably closer to 2 not three comment. I think he also talked about knowing his team now and liking his guys.

However, the similarity stopped there.

I didn't see any similarities. Not even his wife.

I think the most important takeaway from the video is something he has been quoted as having said before. He is only going to sign good players. To me that is critical. Too often coaches will mistake quantity for quality at this stage of the recruiting game. One or two of these scholarships may be more valuable next year with the quality of the player you can get versus what you have available to you now. You don't need another true point guard next year. You just need a guy who can give you 8 to 10 minutes a game to spell BC.

...and we've already got that in Marble. Fran is making a very good move imo. Why add a PG to your roster if said PG is nothing more than a security blanket for the '11 season?

Very smart move imo.

I love this interview. I have had the opportunity to listen to many coaches at various levels answer both softball, and some hardball questions, and this guy comes across as so genuine. It's like, "Here I am, ask me anything and I will answer it".

A lot of coaches either have the confidence, and appear cocky or arrogant, or the personality, and appear slick, maybe too polished. Then there are those who are uncomfortable, and bristle at anyone who dares to ask them a question ... (Bo Pelini comes to mind).

The man just makes me smile. Here's to hoping he has continued success.

"I won't bring in any players that I don't think can start."

That's the key, isn't it? If you can't at least compete for a starting spot on one of the worst major conference teams in the country, why are you worth a four-year scholarship?

We are obviously not going to be a great team next year, but I really don't mind. It is clear that we are on the right trajectory and have a very solid plan.

We've heard most of this all before. It's amazing how people lap up coach-speak

I liked the "We only lost one good player" comment.

I was told that Cully went in to the office to complain about Fran recruiting over him and said he may look into transferring. Fran told him to bring in the papers and he would sign them without trying to talk Cully out of it at all.

Later, Payne saw Francis at the tennis center and turned around and went the complete opposite way so that he did not have to talk to him.

Cully, you will not be missed.

I really do not like having Marble as the sole backup though, because if any injury happens to Cartwright this will be a disaster of a season.

When a player who has three years remaining loses his job via injury to a player who has one year of eligibility, and the coach at the end of the year says the second player proved he deserved hands down to be the starter, and then the coach says recruiting a PG is priority, well the blood spatter writing is pretty much on the wall.

our PG has played hurt or missed significant time due to injury in each of the last 6 years.

And we've also lost the leading scorer from that years team over the same period. Its time to stop looking back and start looking forward. The trend has been broken.

What does this even mean? Are you saying that because you have positive thoughts that Iowa doesn't need to worry about the point guard situation?
