I don't want to wish Ill will to the guy but I hope Wirfs goes to my Browns at pick ten.
I wasn't trying to say he can't make it or I don't think he will make it. I just think there is a pretty decent chance he won't. And if he doesn't, he would be done playing football. That's a huge risk for someone who loves playing. I didn't really think about the other leagues tho.
And there are a boat load of DBs....I hadn't thought about that but you may be right. They may only get the Iowa pro day to show their stuff. Hope not but we'll see

Cleveland is a permanent football career graveyard. There isn't a more compelling argument in all of professional sports for the need of a draft lottery than the Cleveland Browns.

Joe Thomas deserved better. He may have been the best offensive tackle of his generation but wasted his career in football Siberia with zero playoff appearances, let alone a Super Bowl run. It's like watching Felix Hernandez waste his career by toiling for a similarly clueless organization when he was one of the top three or four pitchers in the game for at least five years.

Of all pro sports leagues, the NFL is the one that needs a lottery the most. The careers are too short to recover from getting drafted to a shit team in almost all cases.
I’d even go so far as to say it needs to be a straight lottery instead of weighted like the NBA. It’s been proven time and time again that letting the Browns, Lions, Panthers, Dolphins, etc. pick first or second does nothing to even out competition other than ruin careers and make teams tank games on purpose at the end of the year.
The Patriots and Dolphins should have the same chance at the number 1 pick.

The Miami Dolphins were the team of my youth. Few professional sports franchises have fallen so far and stayed in the depths of hell for so long. At least the Kansas City Royals recently won a world series. And the Baltimore Orioles have years to go in the Valley of Suckdom before they catch up to the Miami Dolphins.
The Packers were we're headed that direction abound 1990 but were blessed the last thirty years by back to back hall of fame quarterbacks that have carried the day.

Baseball stays equitable because of the farm system. There’s literally no attention paid to the draft because there’s maybe two players a decade who go straight to the bigs from the draft and make an impact.
Basketball has a lottery (albeit flawed, imo), and only two rounds. Like baseball, the NBA draft isn’t very applicable to how teams shake out in the end.
Football, on the other hand can’t support a developmental league program, and the rookie contracts are absolutely draconian when it comes to length and there’s zero ability to negotiate or make any individual decisions. You swallow the shit they shove in your mouth or you go home, no questions asked.
The average length of an NFL career is 3.3 years, and rookie contracts are 4 years. You think the NFL didn’t structure it like that on purpose? NFL draft system is a total joke.

Striking gold with two sequential QBs obviously was huge, but if there was one factor that really deserves credit in the Packers' turn-around it was the signing of Reggie White.
Yes, they had already traded for Favre, but, regardless, the perception of GB was still that it was the wasteland of NFL franchises, and the perception of Favre was that he was a reckless gun-slinger playboy that didn't warrant a first-round pick.
Ron Wolf recognized two things when he took over as GM - one, is that the Packers needed a franchise QB, and, two, it was imperative to change the image. When White signed and made those statements at the press conference, the effect was a cosmic shift for the organization that continues to pay dividends to this day.

The NFL also has a players union that has never stood up to the owners and continues to accept the shit they are offered. It's like they know they are getting shit, but since it's NFL shit they open their mouths wide.
The CBA expires soon and negotiations will commence. You can bet your bottom dollar that one of the first bullet points the players will look at is that rookie contract length, especially with what we now know the damage they are doing to themselves to play this game compared to when the last CBA was hammered out in 2011.
The owners have always had the players by the balls. They can, and have, replaced them with non union players. (Players panicked in fear for their jobs and began crossing picket lines in droves and it caused a lot of internal turmoil) They run the NFL the way Peter Grant once ran Led Zeppelin. Greedy, tightfisted, and with the promoters, and players in the NFL's case, getting the shaft.
This upcoming CBA will be fascinating to see if the players gain much when the negotiating is done. Or will they eat shit from the owners again?

You remember thei eighties well. Free Agency was just beginning and NO ONE wanted to play in a small cold weather city. They didn't even like being there as the visiting team which was once verified in a Sports Illustrated player poll.
Reggie White was the trailblazer who gave a faceless franchise instant star power, and the dominos soon fell. Ron Wolf was another key factor like you said. And Mike Holmgren was brought in to harness Favre and turn him into a winning QB instead of strictly a reckless gunslinger. It all worked out pretty well for Green Bay!

The managers and general managers have already taken the fall and there's talk of World Series titles being stripped. But the commissioner's office can't go after the players because 1) the CBA protects the players and 2) the league and owners know they can't make money without the players.
Unlike football players, baseball players know that if they have the ability, they will stay in the game long enough to get paid. Which is why a great young player like Juan Soto will accept a six figure salary despite the fact that he is already one of the ten best players in the game. He knows his payday is coming. Football players know their career can end on the next play.
