It's sad frankly. He all but grew up in Iowa City went to HS and 6 yrs of college there. Played 2 sports. The school and fan base all rallied around Patrick when he fought back from cancer. There is no one in college basketball on this side of Dickie V who's a larger advocate for fighting cancer then Fran. We all know this. He can't hide from his history with the city, program and fans. I look at him as the result of a kid that was born on 3rd base and wasn't taught how to cope when he doesn't get his way.
So when the business side of what happened to Fran happened you'd think a kid that grew up with a D1 HC as his Dad would understand it better. How many D1 coaches have never been fired? It happens to damn near all of em. And now to top it off he himself has gotten himself into coaching. Is he going to react in such a way if Penn fires Fran or if Butler fires him? It's a slippery slope for him to be behaving this way towards Iowa for no other reason then how it looks onto himself as he tries to further his own career. (granted so long as he's with Caitlin he'll never have to really worry about much of anything)
Everyone understands that he and the McCafferys aren't going to be McCollums number one fans. That goes without saying. Nobody expects them to be cheerleaders for the program now. But they don't have to go out of their ways to be a dick. Which is what he's been doing. That the minimum of what's being asked by the fanbase and he doesn't want play it that way.
This is the one that really gets me. Cause he made it seem like he doesn't 'get it' So much so one of his former assistant coaches Tristan Spurlock tweeted back at him this. One would think Fran woulda checked him privately about this but I doubt he ever did. The thing is it's worse then that. He is a smart guy he totally understands what he's doing. It's all intentional. He just doesn't care. He's being vindictive cause that makes him feel better I guess...
It's a good thing his Dad is more professional about it then he is. Not to mention his brothers who as far as I know haven't publicly made asses of themselves on it. I wouldn't say the bridge is totally burned down for some future reconciliation. But he seems to like relighting the Molotov coctails after he throws em. So if there's ever going to be a reconciliation he'll have to want there to be one.
