Tristan Wirfs Declares

So now that the expected dominoes have fallen, who all do you think gets drafted for the Hawks?

AJE and Wirfs: 1st
Stone: 5th?
OJ and Lattimore: 6th
Welch and Weiting: FA

What is the record for most Hawks drafted in one year?
Sleeper pick of the day. I wouldn’t be surprised to see OJ drafted before Stone.

Not sure, but I think the draft used to be like 12 rounds so I wouldn't be surprised if one of Hayden's teams in the mid or late 80's holds the record, but maybe not.

Really? As first and foremost a fan of college football as well as a fan of the NFL, I think it's perfectly logical for a fan to selfishly want to see their favorite players come back to college for another year rather than leaving early, and being drafted by a terribly run organization or a rival of your favorite team.

Note: Wasn't sure at time of this post if yours was heavily influenced by sarcasm.

I was asking the guy I quoted a question.

I think we only get the 2 first rounders drafted. I predict Wirfs #8 to Arizona and AJE #27 to Seattle. Everyone else will be FA pickups.

Even Nate? I would wager pretty highly that we have at least one other player drafted than the two big guys.

Other than Stanley, I think OJ is the most likely to get drafted. Length, athleticism, and a physical tackler. He has NFL safety written all over him.

The combine will sort a lot of that out.

The relevance of the results is highly debatable, but, regardless, combine results can make or break players such as OJ and Stone.

This really hurts Iowa. We are not one of those teams that can just reload. It means lots of playing time for new players and lots of struggles for the Hawks on the field. We'll take some painful losses next year.

I couldn't imagine wanting to risk leaving early to maybe not even get drafted unless you don't even really like playing football. A lot of people hate when their football career ends. To make the decision to leave a year early like Stone and Young, when there's a good chance you will never play a meaningful game again in your life, seems risky unless you're completely fine never playing again.

I would normally agree with this, but we've had maybe the best 3 year run in recruiting in KF's tenure over the last 3 years. It's not "plug and play" by any means, but I feel a lot better about the younger guys taking over for departed players and playing at a high level.

But Young has been here 4 years and will have a degree in hand. I you are looking forward to your professional life (be it football, or something else), hanging around for an extra-semester to get 5 carries a game is a big ask. He has done his part by leading this team while he earned his degree, I can totally see him wanting to start the next phase.

On another note, I don't think we will ever know just how much value is brought to the team by unheralded leaders suh as Toren Young, Devonte Young, Amani Jones, and the Paulsonseses. Their contributions might not always show up on the field, but I think they mean a lot to the program.

Hockenson signed a $19M deal with a $12.4M signing bonus up front.

Fant signed a $12M deal with a $7.1M signing bonus up front.

I would love to see these guys have long, successful NFL careers and get to the second contracts, but they are set.

Here you go, here is $12.4M before you lift a finger. Sweet. OK I retire now.

well that is all contingent on being on roster I believe. They set those up to where if you pull a Chris Boreland and retire after 1 yr you have to give back X amount or a certain percentage of it. But if you don't quit what's guaranteed to you is yours by just showing up. If they cut you due to sucking you still get it.

I get the Young one more than the Stone was, mostly because of playing time. People say Stone will be in the same situation next year so he just as well try now. But that's not factoring in the part where football is most of these kids lives for as long as they can remember and most don't want it to end. There is a very good chance he's making the decision to end football permanently for the rest of his life. Does he not love the game or is he more confident in sticking in the NFL than maybe he should be? I guess that's my question.

Yeah I know, but still you can suck bad and you get $12.4M at that point.

It’s questionable whether Stone or OJ even get invited to the combine. There are limited spots.

I would be pretty shocked if Stone didn’t play a game in the NFL, barring injury. I think you are underrating him some in that regard.

Also you got the XFL starting up this year and the CFL. If he wants to continue playing football there will absolutely be avenues.

Now if you want to compare those leagues vs a full college season at the big ten level that would be a good debate. Playing on national tv in front of huge crowds at historic stadiums seems like it would be pretty cool to me. But people like money too.
