Thoughts on Howe's article

I would like people's thoughts on Howe's article: Scout.com: Apathy in Iowa?

Personally, I spend very little time on his site anymore as I find his reporting almost anti Hawkeye and way too willing to sensationalize a story. That said, I do not agree with his point of view in the article and I for one am very excited to see the team hit the field in the near future. I want to evaluate not only the team, but the coaches.

Thoughts?

You know, Howe used to be a decent guy a few years ago. But it seems ever since his little run in with Kirk he has almost had a vendetta against football. I don't see any apathy in regards to football. Most people with half a brain understand this year is going to be a question mark due to player turnover and youth. But I, like many others, aren't any less excited for the season to start. This is just Howe drumming up site hits.

My take in the article: it's his job to write about the hawks, and there's nothing really to write about. So he tried to come up with something thought provoking and insightful, and in some ways he did. Yet, his result was a meaningless article that doesn't really say anything at all.

It seems like his entire point is that their expectations are relatively low, and hawk fans have responded with relatively low preseason excitement... Am I missing something?

Maybe he has an article quota to fill

Run in with Kirk?

Agreed. How is tired of being the third place Iowa website. His badgering of Ferentz jumped the shark. Sad.

As a rule I stop reading a post or an article as soon as they mention Kirks salary. Its like a canary in a coal mine for me.

Dare I say it, but maybe Hawk fans are becoming more realistic in their expectations? We have wasted many an off-season banging the drum and getting excited only to have the season come and be disappointed. So now we have more realistic expectations and her excited when there is a reason to be excited, otherwise just sit back and enjoy the ride.

This is sort of my thinking, too. We've known since the winter that this season was more rebuild than reload. We've known the DL issues that Iowa will face, and I just think this team can only fly so high this year. Combine that with renewed excitement in basketball and I think folks are just being more realistic with this football season.

Apathy is not a word I would use were I describing this season. Apathy means people don't care, or at least, that is my thought of what it means. Perhaps it means different things for different people.

I am just as excited for this season as I am any other, but I am realistic enough to know it would take nothing short of a miracle to run off a 10 or 11 win season and a BCS berth. I will believe there is apathy for Hawkeye football when 70k plus people stop showing up at Kinnick.

Me too, if not more than ever. The last 2 years I've been nervous. This year I'm excited and anxious.

I'm always excited to see the Hawks. Some seasons I'm more excited than others maybe. I'm making the 400 mile trek from MN to take the kids to Saturday's Kid's Day. They're stoked, I'm stoked. Here we Go! Hardly apathy.

I don't read Howe's articles anymore. Haven't for awhile but I would say there is as much excitement in the program as there has been. The wealth of young talent combined with the new staff has this program headed nowhere but up. I think the majority of Hawk fans understand that 7 to 8 wins this year is realistic with anything over that being gravy.

My base expectations for every year are 8-4 (4-4) There is no reason why we can't do that this year, although I don't think we will.

Since 2002, Iowa football has met my base expectations 5 times.

I used to be a subscriber to HI, but rarely visit the site anymore. It's a ghost town.

I like Rob, but maybe it's time for him to find something else to do?

The staff made some major coaching blunders the past few seasons and under performed big time Some much needed staff changes were made. That doesn't sound like apathy to me.

We already know where we fall short (DL, RB) Reasons for excitement:

1) The coaching changes. The Hawks WERE stale, long overdue.
2) Mandenberg. A senior QB who is smart. I think he'll have a great year.
3) CJF: Beast in the making.
4) Our LB'ers: Underrated group IMO.
5) Our secondary: We have some playmakers and I can't wait to see Nico Law.
6) The schedule: Take care of business and we should be 4-0 heading into the B1G.

Go Hawks!
