THIS RECRUITING STORY IS GETTING OLD

I listened to the On Iowa Pod last night and Dochterman was saying he heard that Atwood played a pickup game with the team on his visit...and he had his stuff handed to him by Uthoff and White and that he wasn't going to be starting for Iowa next year if he came there....and Arizona State, he probably will. If that did happen and was a part of it all, is that 'losing out' on a player?

Heard a very similar version.

Out of a list of over 20 players that Fran sought to sign this class, this staff wasn't able to sign even one of them. Not a good record, imo. And as JM pointed out in one of his articles, Iowa is likely going to the NIT again next year, which would be step backwards in recruits' eyes and make recruitng more difficult.

Because I really don't know - Who are the 20 players that Fran sought that he didn't get. I know Ulis, Atwood, Cole.

Fran has been at Iowa 4 years and Iowa has gotten better each year. I anticipate another step up in year 5. Our 2 most highly regarded recruits are heading into their junior season. We had Ulis until Kentucky came calling at the last minute. He has verbals from a junior and a sophomore in high school. Fran and his staff also know how to develop players. I'm not concerned at all.

To bad his recruiting has gotten worse and worse...

During the LickBall years, today's high school seniors were 10 years old, and probably none of them watched the Hawks deliberately, they were more than likely watching their opponent. The Hawks were in the worst shape I can remember. They were among, if not, the worst team in Div One.....

We are now getting attention from many recruits. It is a slow process, but we are making progress, starting with the last game of Fran's first year beating number four Purdue at Carver, following that by a bid to the NIT in his second year, a bid to the Nit resulting in the championship game his third year followed by a bid to the NCAA Tournament his fourth year.....

Not too shabby, despite the last seasons fail at the end. We will be better next year. What is all this criticism about not recruiting with the best in the Big. How many times have we recruited with Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana, once under Raveling that I can remember. Illinois should beat us in recruiting every year. Chicago has many excellent recruits every year, but Illinois doesn't get that many of them for some odd reason.....

We lose a recruit to Kentucky that we were in on from the first, what a surprise. Losing a JC to sleazy Arizona State, probably lured by strippers and blow, while living close to one of the most dangerous cities in America is not a disgrace. I almost feel sorry for Willie's failure to come to Iowa. He wasn't going to be the player to turn us into a Sweet Sixteen team. How many times did Alford do that with Iowa. Zero. He only beat Creighton in a close game. Huff is a transfer from Nevada, and he is no McDermott, far from a game changer on a team that is seriously depleted now. Remember he is a transfer from Nevada, big deal.....

Fran has a knack for getting good players and developing them. The mystery surrounding the failure at the end of the season was an anomaly, and it is OVER.....

Until the last third of the season, approximately, Oglesby and Uthoff were hitting about 50% of their threes. I wished they would shoot more. That is the biggest criticism of the Hawks, failure to take an open shot, especially ones they are more than capable of making. I would like to see Mike, as someone mentioned, stop short, like George Constanza, leave his opponent flying past him, and nail a short jump shot off the backboard, like BJ. It is one of the easiest shots in basketball, and will work almost every time, or just step away from the basket at the last second and toss a hook shot off the backboard, nail the square behind the rim and odds are it will go in.....

Might be nice to take the nasty comments somewhere else concerning Fran. He has exceeded expectations and has had to deal with a very serious family situation in the real World.....

Last season ended with a disappointment, but that is done. New season next season, might be a new start with the seniors graduating. I like the three new recruits coming in and they could be difference makers. We have three/four of the better three point shooters around on the team, Oglesby, Uthoff, Jok and Brady Ellingson. If they are not reluctant to shoot, things could be much better.....

Not really any reason to condemn next years team and Fran in the process, this is MAY, and we have a football season to go through.....

Relax, Lads, Fran is getting it done, and try to get over losing recruits to the elite programs in the BIG and nationally.....

Stopping Short.....

This is exactly the point Jack. We don't recruit like these teams, and we also don't win like these teams. It's not like Iowa is experiencing a ton of success while the big boys get the starry recruits. Iowa has finished in the top three on the B1G three times in the past 20 years. Iowa hasn't won the B1G outright in 35 years. Iowa hasn't won an NCAA tournament game in 15 years. In when Iowa last won that NCAA game, it is because Steve Alford, of all people, had a team full of talent he recruited, including a few future NBA players.

Like I said earlier, if your metric of success is top half of the B1G, 20 wins, and an occasional NCAA bid, then by all means, we are successful. If you want to compete for the B1G title, do some damage in the tournament, and send some players to the association, what we're doing is not working. And what isn't working now is only going to get harder, because the B1G is full of great coaches, and ISU has a great coach, and we're banking schollies after getting too many "no thanks".

It will take time, T, but we are on the way. The end of last season left a bitter taste in everyone's mind, and I do agree that we were better Fran's third season. We might have to wait a while until we recruit with the top Big teams who are among the elite, not mentioning the chronic top ten teams every year....

At least we are getting some attention from top recruits who are visiting every now and then. That is an improvement....

Look where we were before the start of Fran's first season, even Uthoff, an lifelong Hawk fan went to Wisconsin after Lick and not knowing what was going to happen with a new coach who had a tremendous rebuilding job ahead of him.....

Uthoff left Wisconsin because he knew he was never going to play when he was stuck behind Dekker, who is younger, better, and has the exact same game as he does. I mean, if Uthoff was at Wisconin this year, what would his role be? Probably splitting backup minutes with Nigel Hayes; 10 mpg tops.

Also, Bo didn't go to the limit to keep Uthoff away from Iowa. It is common practice to refuse to allow another player to sign in conference. The issue is that he wouldn't let him talk to anyone in the ACC and other places. I think Bo did this because he's a jerk, not because he was afraid Uthoff would be an amazing player elsewhere.

I'm not saying he's not a decent player. Like I said, he's average. He's probably never going to play 25+ mpg, and he'll never get all B1G honors. Just look at the college game right now. Your team won't go very far if Jarrod Uthoff is one of your top 3 players.

Who said ANYthing about Uthoff as "top 3 player", and his leaving Wisconsin because of Dekker or PT is PURE speculation. I'll fling, against the same wall you used, that he left because Lick was now out of the picture and Fran was solid at Iowa.

And I'd say Bo Ryan went a lot further than any coach I can remember.

I trust McCaffery in three respects. -- ability to recruit quality players, ability to develop players, and in-game coaching.

McCaffery will be the Iowa head coach for at least the next dozen years. Bank it.

As frustrated as I am with coming in second over and over again this past year or so, I can at least find some reason to be encouraged by this. Iowa is finally getting some good players to look our way, and actually visit... Hopefully a couple of commitments will start to roll in. I agree that it's a process, and things seem to be looking up, even compared to just 2-3 years ago.

Under Lick, the response was basically "thanks but no thanks" from the vast majority of recruits that were getting much attention. Lick was mostly bringing in guys that were told they should look elsewhere if they wanted any PT (Brommer & Bawinkel) or players that only had offers from the UW Milwaukee's off the world. The fact that Lick Jr. was getting meaningful minutes at Iowa (basically anything other than chips-n-salsa time) says it all.

We're much better off these days, to say the least. We're not "there" yet, but at least we have legit Big Ten calibur players.

What is your basis for this stance? I think my position on this is different than many others. I don't think recruiting or individual recruits can be evaluated until after their careers are completed. I'm not evaluating Fran's recruiting based on what the various rating services think. A recruiting class is an unknown until after they have played their 4 years at Iowa IMO.

Very True

Below are Fran's recruiting classes. He got Cartwright and brought Basabe. McCabe was always going to be a Hawk and he had to get Marble to stay committed...so I included all 4 players his first year.

2010 – Cartwright, Marble, Basabe and McCabe
10-11 = 33.4 PPG & 15.7 RPG & 8.3 APG
11-12 = 33.5 & 15.3 & 9.7
12-13 = 27.5 & 12.8 & 4.8 (Cartwright gone)
13-14 = 30.3 & 11.8 & 5.1

2011 – White, Oglesby and Olaseni
11-12 = 18.9 & 8.6 & 2.3
12-13 = 20.0 & 10.2 & 2.5
13-14 = 25.9 & 13.1 & 3.5

2012 – Gesell, Woodbury, Clemmons, Ingram and Meyer AND Uthoff
12-13 = 18.8 & 9.6 & 6.5
13-14 = 24.0 & 13.1 & 7.5 (Ingram gone & Uthoff eligible)

2013 – Jok
13-14 = 4.4 & .9 & .7

2014 – Ellingson, Uhl and Dickerson (so far)

The 2010 class has a 2 time all conference player in Marble and an all freshman team player in Basabe. Cartwright was also crucial to putting a competitive team on the floor...think we got him in June so recruiting may not be done for this year just yet.

The 2011 class already has an all freshman team and 1 time all conference player in White. The final analysis of this class must wait a year.

The classes for 2012, 2013 and 2014 are just coming into their own or aren't even on campus yet. Time will tell what to make of their contributions.

Edit - Added Uthoff.
