This Program Smells

Thank you Mr. Official for ignoring the defensive pass interference on Minnesota's last offensive play of the game.

It was extremely ugly but it was a win.

Ah the officials...One could also make the case for Iowa being 6-0 right now if not for a couple phantom holding calls.
PI in the end zone could possibly have been called this past Saturday but was a good no call. Good calls/bad calls tend to even out over time.

Expectations change emotion. I was pissed with the last few weeks but with lowered expectations any win is a positive. I expect Iowa to beat Purdue and Illinois and hopefully penn st. I hope they are at least competitive with Nebraska and Wisconsin. And Michigan, well, I might make other plans.

Nebraska is not a top 25 team, much less #12. They will be hard pressed to beat Indiana this week. Certainly a winnable game for Iowa. Wisconsin is solid but we all know that game will be close. Michigan? Hope for the best & that they come in to Kinnick a little full of themselves.

It was an ugly game, but I was happy we got out of there with the pig.

A couple of things that I've seen in this thread:

1. I've heard a lot of "7-5" talk. Right now this team feels more like 6-6 unless something changes. It's truly mind boggling given the year we had last year and the schedule. I understand people defending KF based on the fact that he's had some crazy successful year. But this season on no level is acceptable, unless we make some huge improvements and end 9-3 or 8-4. There is still time, but I'm not holding my breath.
2. A lot of complaints about the receivers. I disagree with some of the comments. They are young, but there is talent there. It's the system. The read and react stuff doesn't work with these young guys. Tell them where to go, develop some timing with CJ, and I would guess there is enough talent to get some separation. The passing offense is horrible. It has been from the moment GD stepped on campus, despite being 12-0 last year.

The interception near the goal line was completely on the receiver (OK a great move by the DB). However, the receiver, however young showed a lack of competitiveness. Even as a Freshman as a D1 player, one has to not give up on a play like that. Players have an edge or they don't.

350k/yr for Fry's output. After incentives about half what the dumbbell in charge of dumbbells makes. And what did Fry give us? Ranked teams 50% of the time. KF? Ranked teams 33% of the time. Over ten times as much money for less prestige. Yay for an establishment which delivers less and calls it more.
Not defending Ferentz. Contract extension was asinine, but salaries have escalated dramatically since the 80's. Keep in mind that Rhodes was making some pretty serious money at ISU winning 3 games a year. In 2012, they gave him a 10 year deal worth $20 million. Can you imagine the deal he would have gotten if he had 5 top 10 finishes, nationally, with two Orange Bowls and a Rose Bowl? Also, during the Fry years, it really was OSU, Michigan and then everyone else. Fry was really good at beating the teams that were crappy in the league and ISU. OSU and Michigan, not so much.

Umm. Iowa is nowhere near top 25 and would be hard pressed to beat Indiana. If someone offered 8-4 right now, I would take it 100/100 times.

I agree, that was a bad play. My point is, although the receivers aren't great, we aren't completely void of talent as others have stated throughout the thread. I think the problem is a systemic, and there are several to blame for the problem, starting with KF, GD, the OL, CJ, and the receivers.

Yep, some bad officiating this year. Of course if we had the type of OC/HC who could hang 58/78 points on a loser program, then bad calls wouldn't determine the outcome of games against bad opponents. But we're stuck with a HC that has superior talent to our first 6 opponents and either loses to or scrapes by 4 of them.

And, if you compare stats across eras you ignore circumstances.

KF inherited a team that had been stumbling for several years. Hayden's had been comatose for about 20.

Scheduling? How many times did Hayden miss Mich and / or OSU ? I know Hayden's teams played ooc games against Oklahoma, Nebraska, UCLA , and Miami (FL). How many similar for KF? How many W's did Hayden get against FCS / MAC?

Oh, and Hayden's teams were usually fun to watch. KF's?? Stats aside, its supposed to be entertaining, right?

Very true. Unfortunately, that is what we are stuck with here. Virtually every game we play will be close so every penalty, turnover, stupid call, clock mismanagement will be magnified.

I've never heard Dolph talk about a qb taking hits like h has this year.and I agree that some is on CJ. He also gets hit a lot on throws. No time.
QB's should never get hit? And don't? Dolph's an idiot and Podelak's brain is fried from alcohol abuse. You won't 'learn' anything from those two...just entertaining. And if you've ever noticed, people have short and 'selective' memories, so I don't concern myself much with what people seem to 'remember'. Like I've said for 2 years, CJ is slow in his reads and has NO pocket presence, so he is going to take hits. A couple of the sacks he took vs NW, an Aaron Rogers would have just 'stepped away from....

Icky, Ya ya ya you are an expert we know that. CJ is not the biggest problem.

The biggest problem is that KF hasn't recognized your astute ability to observe football and that he hasn't hired you yet. After all, didn't HF hire an accountant? You probably need to plunk down some more cash to get to know him better. Too bad he doesn't read here.

So your criticism is that he isn't a hall of fame QB yet?

Same story last year (aka the year KF proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he deserves to coach here as long as Bowden, Paterno, and Bernie from "Weekend at Bernie's" who wasn't a coach but who died and was still around)

If a long kick misses against Pitt? If the Wis guard doesn't step on his qb's foot? Easily could have been 2 L's. 2 early L's means a lot less confidence / momentum. Those 2 plays last year might have been the only diff between that start and this year's (record-wise, at least).

A thin line between love and hate?

It is a fine line between winning and losing. That's why I freak out when people tell me Iowa is a shameful school with a shameful coach if we run up the score. Which of course we don't which apparently makes us a saintly program.

Are you ******* kidding me!!!! Winning/losing by one score is so old and detrimental to the program. Fry used to stomp foes into an early grave. If KF crushed our opponents they way he crushes Barta, every game would end 78-0 with Iowa swaggering off the field.

The husband reference was cuz I thought you were a girl . . . Oh I get it, you think Hawkeye = male so that's what I should've assumed. Sexist (smh)
You don't even lie well. Funny you had a cyclone picture so quick to share. And you bag on the Hawks 24/7. 2+2=? Yea...I'll keep you in suspense.

I still think you're a girl.

Quadcity still thinks the program smells.

Keep "getting in the last word", girls never do that.

Iowa's offense just needs to grab every other team's defense by the pussy and show them they won't be stopped by anything as simple as pants...errr, coverage.
