This just in.....Nebraska is HORRIBLE...Frost Bite Program

Nebraska is the perfect example or cautionary tale for the arrogance of a once proud football power. Although we have never been a football power...look at what happens when you think you deserve better than you have. Nebraska is no longer a "destination." They no longer are a program that should expect success. They demand it. They move on a winning coach because they "deserve better." Anyone can coach a midwest school to a title. Easy. Well fellas, it isnt. Look to our west KF bashers and THAT program or the ISU program is why you appreciate KF. Look at the Iowa basketball program. THAT is why at Iowa you dont quit on a good thing. Moving Tom Davis to pasture still haunts the basketball program.
Good post.

Iowa did the exact same thing with the Tom Davis debacle.

Uppity fans and clueless administration thought Iowa "deserved better" and weren't happy with consistent winning albiet no championships.

What each program wouldn't give to have the success of those coaches who were let go now.

Just watched the SF post game presser and it sounds like they more problems than just playing bad football. When players aren't going to class I believe this becomes a huge problem.

do tell. What did he say?

BTW, the delusion on the Nebby board is something else. A discussion about Frost leaving UCF came up and people were dissing Orlanda, why would you wanna live there, etc etc. That's right, people who live in Nebraska...were saying Florida is a hole....and they were serious. Orlando ain't exactly Miami Beach...but ...nebraska?!

Sounds like a general culture of accepting losing. Hayden and Barry talk in their respective autobiographies about encountering the same cultures when they took their HC jobs. Kids not buying in, not being respectful in team meetings, general dreck. Well, Hayden and Barry wasted no time cleaning house, getting rid of some bad apples before spring practice had even begun. Alvarez famously took a look at the list of players the previous regime was recruiting and crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash. While neither Fry nor Alvarez had winning records their first two years they had at least separated the wheat from the chaff.

Frost apparently has refused to do that. He was too arrogant. He and his AD were talking too much trash in the spring, summer. Did he not watch the films? Could he not see what novices like us could, that his program had fallen behind from a physical stanpoint and lacked discipline and off the field? Or did he think the "N" stood for noneedtoworry?

I remember Tommy Armstrong and Jordan Westercamp getting messed up in some nasty off field incident just before the 2015 Iowa game that I don't think they even bothered to pursue. I remember their DB Gerry targeting T. Smith, who had already had one concussion that year, and getting an early exit from his Senior Day. Who knows what was going on behind the scenes.

There are probably about ten starters on that team that don't have the talent to play in the the Big Ten, lack the proper mental discipline, or both. Now Frost at 0-4 comes out and says he has a discipline problem in addition to a talent problem. No shit. We could have told him that nine months ago. But that's okay, sunshine. Keep flapping your gums and putting your pathetic team in the field. It's almost as much fun to see you lose as it is to see Iowa win.

IMO, Nubby only has a realistic shot at 3 wins: Minny, Bethune-cookman, & Illinois. I think they beat Bethune, but the other two games could go either way. I'm guessing they win 1 or 2 total. The bigger question will be if any commits change their minds.

I agree ^^ One could say you look at the Evy Hawkeyes of 1956-61, a short time period, but one is which the hawks became a top 5 type team year in and out. Let's say more money convinces Evy to just be head coach and not go to AD. Does Iowa have a great 1960's?? Again it is not that Evy was fired but the coaching change, Burns not working out even though he proved a good coach in the NFL, and then Evy making things political from the AD chair hurt Iowa for a long time.

A program has to find the right head coach, look at Chip Kelly. When Osborne retired Solich was a good fit and he had some really good teams but Nebby jumped on the Callahan West Coast bandwagon which in NE cold windy weather was maybe not a good fit.

"Don't strive for greatness...settle for mediocrity" - said NONE of the founding fathers.

Tom Davis was a .500 coach after Raveling's recruits left. His better staff members got hired away and he was never able to replace them with their equals. Great guy. Couldn't recruit.

Even with all the current construction, Orlando is a crap ton better than Miami, Miami Beach, Lauderdale, etc. There is a place on 95 where the pavement (literally) changes from one surface to another. That is the "line of demarcation" between "normal" and "weird".

The funny part is, people in Orlando were certain Frost would never leave UCF for Nebraska. On the surface they were right, but they discount the "new arrogance" of UCF. If UCF ever gets into a P5 conference, they will come back to earth. Facilities- and campus-wise, UCF has absolutely NOTHING on ANY school in the B1G. Not even close. Once they have to abide by conference standards for admission, they're just another team. But, they have a SERIOUS talent pool down here from which to draw.

Not landing in state talent like LaFrentz, Collision, and Heinrich, and not seemingly even that interested in recruiting LaFrentz, started to wear on Bowlsby, who placed an emphasis on "locking up his own." His lax handling of Chris Kingsbury's on and off the court problems shortened his leash with Bowlsby even more. And you may know more about this than myself. Was Davis even interested in spending his summers trailing along what was then a fledging AAU circuit? Many old school coaches, like Bobby Knight, wanted no part or it. Either way, another example lax recruiting, or not adjusting to a new way of doing so.

Bowlsby had his eye on Alford well before Davis contract was allowed to expire. He was going to be the golden boy to lead our program for the next quarter century, like Knight or K. Like many of Bowlsby's ideas, it drug us further into mediocrity. Look at how he treated Dan Gable, a legend if there ever was one.

Good point about not replacing the recruiting abilities of Pearl and Rudy Washington. They were responsible for Acie Earl, Ray Thompson, James Moses, Russ Millard, etc. Bruce and Rudy were huge losses.

OK everybody. This thread is NOT about how bad our basketball team sucks. It's about how bad Nebraska's football team sucks. They're really bad, so there's plenty to talk about. Now, back on topic everyone!

Didn't you hear, they have just been beating themselves. Get that cleaned up and they should be 4-0.

I simply want to hear a nebby fan say there is no reason they shouldn't be a 8 win team, and an occasional 10+ win team. But won't. Because they think their a couple years away from being a perennial top 15 team.

Frost is good coach, and they'll get better. But hes not a great coach, not yet. He was a great player, who had great players around him. He says all the right things, and his offense will score points, but there is one common denominator in all of his teams...including the great UCF team(which is better this year btw)....

Defense. And lack thereof.

And I paraphrase "almost 600 yards of offense should win games"..... yep scott...you're right...it should...in lesser league's that play no defense. UCF didn't have good defense, they outscored everyone.

That Martinez kid can play, and they arguably have the best overall wr group in the B1G. But nowhere in Frosts coaching history has he had an even above avg defense. And that is why, even with a high output offense, nebby will be no more than a good, occasionally very good, team.

That all said, I do think they'll improve, how could they not. Iowa better not have a turd game against them.

The great fuskers with their yellow shirt defense! What a reputation to have. Can't have enough popcorn to watch them play football.

Yeah, despite all, I have a feeling that the huskers will play a good game at Kinnick. Just a dark menacing presence wandering around the corridors of my mind.....

Not unlike the dread of falling asleep because you have been having nightmares.....

I have to disagree here. Iowa's BB program was stuck in neutral at the time. Tom had done all he could here. Yes they were an NCAA team quite a bit but a one win and done NCAA team until his last year. I understand and respect that for other fans, that is perfectly fine. But I thought the time was right to make a move.

Bowlsby rolled the dice on what everyone seemed to think was a great young coach. The moved bombed. It happens.

But what haunts the Iowa program is following:

1. They only put money into the football program during the Alford or Lick era. No practice facility and for half of each season Iowa men's team didn't even have priority as far as practice time. That's begging for your program to die.

2. They followed up the Alford hire by somehow trumping it with hiring Lick.

The Big Ten is a cold weather conference. You must build consistently good defenses first to achieve competitiveness. You must also build a culture of accountability and not making dumb mistakes.

Fry, Alvarez (at Wisconsin) and Ferentz understood that and did it.

Frost doesn't understand Big Ten football. There are a ton of tough teams. Every year. Very few cupcakes (like in the old Big 8). You have to build your lines first, on both sides of the ball. You have to win up front, or at least hold your own.

Nebraska has a very long way to go. I hope they stay down for a while. That would help Iowa. Their fan base still doesn't get it. Purdue was the more physical team, and that is why they won. Poor, weak teams commit a lot of penalties to substitute for their lack of line play and overall physicality.

Watch Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa play defense. Tough. Disciplined. Assignment football.

Some good points here. Alford was part of a younger generation of coaches replacing some of the old guard. Bowlsby was smitten over him. And if that 2001-2002 team had lived up to expectations and made a serious NCAA run, perhaps success would have bred success.

Alas, they underachieved. And even Recker's conference tournament heroics weren't enough to keep them out of the NIT. And they were bounced in the opening round by a very athletic LSU team.

I don't recall too many players running to transfer to Iowa after that.
