This is why ferentz is toast and will never take Iowa to a bowl again.

"Q. Are you comfortable with this coaching staff as it is going into the future?
COACH FERENTZ: Yeah, I'm comfortable with everything right now."

I have said before that he is delusional. If after a horrible season, six straight losses and he still answers a question like that, I don't know how any man can say that he is not.

Agree that Kurt just does not get it. Neither does our media.

There are always 2 or 3 "did he just say that" moments in pressers. He never gets called out for answers like this by our equally inept media. Our reporters rarely ask the questions people want asked...like today: was there one question on time management late in the first half. Coming out of a TO with 12 men. Or what about punting on their 31 yard line resulting in a touchback for a net gain of 11 yards.

I guess the media think our primary concern is how KF feels about being a father.

I am not even mad at him any more. I actually feel sad for him now because there is something wrong with him.

Kirk was deferring on that. I don't think he was going to publicly call anyone out. Just not his style. WHo knows, maybe he's already made decisions and from that stand point his answer is right on the money.

This. He's not going to throw people under the bus, and certainly not in a post game presser. I'd love to see some real answers on the big picture stuff, but post game pressers are not typically the place to get those answers with any coach. The coaches and players are typically too focused on what just happened 20 minutes ago in those situations.

So you're surprised he didn't throw Davis under the bus? What program have you been watching the past 14 years?

Nope, not surprised. And I'm not wanting him to call out anyone in a presser. But to answer that question like he did indicates that he's not living in reality.

How would you have answered the question?

He should have answered it with, "forget about the other coaches, I suck at managing a football game.
I am the head coach, and the fact that we waste timeouts, manage the clock poorly, call really stupid plays in crucial situations, and punt from the opponents' 30 fricking yard line, is all on me. I make the final decisions on who plays and who doesn't play. I made the decision to play a quarterback every play of every game, even though it was very obvious he wasn't getting the job done. The other coaches make about 8% of what I make. I am responsible." Next question..

It would have been refreshing to get an answer to the effect of: " Well, clearly, after losing eight games in a season, as a coach you take a look at what worked and more importantly what you could have done better. As a staff we'll be meeting in the coming weeks and looking at any adjustments we feel would be appropriate."

Still coach-speak but at least you get the sense he has a clue that something isn't working.

Guys that get all mad and reved up by what KF does or doesn't say on media conferences are idiots. He doesn't reveal anything unless a) he has to or b) it somehow benetits his team. Its been that way the last fourteen years, it will be that way the next four.

I'm putting this post in this thread, because the Rittenberg thread got sidetracked.

Rittenberg says:
Iowa's inept offense and hyper-conservative coaching staff also deserves an assist in Nebraska's win. Hawkeyes fans deserve better (more on this later).
and
I've defended Ferentz before, and his overall success at Iowa can't be denied, but the program has completely lost momentum, dropping its final six games. Iowa went 4-8 despite a very easy schedule that didn't include Ohio State or Wisconsin and had Penn State at home.

This is unacceptable for a program that won a BCS bowl game three years ago. It's certainly unacceptable for a coach making what Ferentz makes.

It's one thing to have us know-nothings spout nonsense on a message board. It's another thing when the Mothership's Big Ten blogger says it.

Barta should be fired for making that ridiculous contract extension.

The fans are idiots???

I'll bet not one fan on this board would have punted from the opponent's 30 yard line at any time, in any game, ever..Ferentz has made so many clock management/game management type blunders that it is hard to keep track of them all, but punting on the + side, 30 yard line takes the cake.
$950,000 per win this year. Enough said.

Here you go. Have a conversation with this brick. It will be much more insightful than a KF press conference.

To think that he'd answer that question any other way than the way he did proves you're not living in reality. If you seriously think this coach, not to say any other coach, is going to discuss staffing issues in a post-game press conference, you're either blinded by hate, or too stupid to understand how the world works. Probably a good portion of both.

How would you have answered the question?

After a 4-8 record, and having one of the worst offenses in the entire country, I am not sure how I would answer that question, but the way I would NOT answer that question would be "Yeah, I'm comfortable with everything".

I know it's alot of coachspeak and all, but if I was coach, I would be just as ticked at a 4-8 record as are the fans, and certainly would not be telling the media that I'm comfortable with the situation. No, I would discuss coaching changes and whatnot there, but my answer certainly would've had a different feel.

So you're mad he ain't mad? Trust me, he hates losing as much as you.

Rittenberg:

The game encapsulated Iowa's miserable 2012 campaign and some of the season-long issues that never got fixed.

Two examples of ineptitude:

  • After dropping an interception, Iowa drove to the Nebraska 19 late in the first half. After Vandenberg was dropped for no gain, Iowa let a bunch of time tick away before calling a timeout. The Hawkeyes then proceeded to earn an illegal substitution penalty (after a timeout, mind you). Moments later, Mike Meyer hooked a field goal and Iowa wasted a perfect opportunity to tack onto a lead in a game where points were at a premium.

  • Facing a third-and-4 near midfield midway through the fourth quarter, Iowa handed the ball to Mark Weisman, who was easily smothered short of the marker. First-year coordinator Greg Davis has had a lot of head-scratching calls this season, but this might have been the worst. The height of conservatism. Pathetic.

I didn't even mention the punt from the Nebraska 31-yard line in the first half.

Iowa's defense deserves better than what it got from the offense this season. The Hawkeyes must have set a record for most takeaways not converted into points. Or third-down pass routes run short of the marker.

Kirk Ferentz won't be fired because he makes too much money. So unless he leaves for the NFL, he'll be tasked to fix this mess. Vandenberg regressed as a senior and Davis left Hawkeyes fans banging their heads against the wall. I've defended Ferentz before, and his overall success at Iowa can't be denied, but the program has completely lost momentum, dropping its final six games. Iowa went 4-8 despite a very easy schedule that didn't include Ohio State or Wisconsin and had Penn State at home.
