The way some people on this board villify Vandy

I might have missed it, but do you mention one game he's played well against a good defense? Hint: it's not PSU or MSU.

Last time I checked there were 10 other guys out there with him that are required to do some of the work. Let's blame Coker for the 57 yard performance against Michigan State then. It's moronic to think like he's the reason we lost those games.

I'd put more blame on our coaching staff for the game plans. We should have been in the gun more against Michigan State as they were controlling the line of scrimmage.

Vandy is better than his numbers suggest. Take away some of the 26 drops, and he probably has 3000 yards and 27-28 TDs. Still only 6 interceptions. By the numbers he is the second best passer in the Big Ten,behind only Russell Wilson, who parachuted in from NCSt. where he was a 3 year starter with a record number of yards. If he stays put at NCSt.,then Vandy is the king of the QBs in the Big Ten...and yet we have doofus's on here who are complaining about him? Get your heads out of your video games and smell the coffee....Vandy has has a great year.
And those that are saying Vandy has Marvin so he should have good numbers....this is the worst TE group Iowa has had in the KF era. And our rbs do not catch well. And our WR's drop the most in the league, and Vandy is lucky? Give me frigggin break.

+1

The people critical of Vandenberg in this thread have yet to provide an actual stat. They are judging based on their perceptions of him. Here are the splits of him on ESPN (not all of them are updated with today's game mind you). Please look through them and if you come back saying he's not a good QB and hasn't had a very good year then you are a complete moron.

You got exactly as much effort as you deserved.

Well, i dont think I said anything unfair, if I did please point it out. I like JVB, want the kid to be the best QB Iowa has ever had. Heck, I just do not think he has been as good as the statistics show and certainly not one of the best ever at Iowa. Like I said, my own feeling is he has struggled in numerous games and left some plays on the field.

I hope he comes out and plays out of this world next week and Iowa gets to 8-4.

He has a year left and I think he has a chance to make that a VERY special year. As Jon said, he has all of the tools to be great, no doubt. Again, I just dont think he is there yet. I hope he proves me wrong the next 2 games and all of next season.

wow, what do some of you expect? if you were expecting a Heisman trophy candidate, then that's your fault for putting those expectations on the kid. yikes.

outside of brad banks, he's had the best year of any first year QB that iowa has seen probably since chuck long. and i bet if he had the talent on that banks lead team, he'd have some ridiculous stats.

C'mon Man

For those just tuning in, Miller hardly ever criticizes Iowa coaches and certainly not players.

Here's the thing: does "skill set" include an ability to recognize a blitz? The ability to throw an accurate long ball? The ability to play well (much less post a win) against a good defense? These are just a few examples.

Have you been watching Iowa football this year? He has connected on more long balls than any Iowa QB in a long time. It's as if people expect him to be flawless. QBs have the ball on almost every offensive snap, of course they are going to make mistakes. What matters is having the best person out there who gives us the best chance to win and that is JVB.

Boy I REALLY disagree here Jon. He has played some terrible football this season. He was basically flat out bad, hell terrible, against Iowa St, Penn st, Minnesota, and Michigan St.
He had ONE good quarter (maybe 1.5) against Pitt. Was okay against Michigan and NW.

I guess I expect a QB to step up in big games and not lay an egg when it counts most. JVB played great against ULM, Purdue, and Indiana.

For a 4th year junior, he needs to be better and make much better decisions. He doesnt throw many INTs because he sits on the ball and takes a sack. Taking a sack in the endzone today was a joke. No excuse in the world to hang on to the football like that.

He has the best WR in Iowa history probably and a RB that is basically good for 100+ in each conf game. He continually doesnt handle the blitz well, throws balls that are not even close to his WRs, and takes sacks when he has an opportunity to throw the ball away.

I am far from impressed most games and wouldnt put him anywhere near the best in Iowa history. Great kid, average QB.

Folks that think he is anywhere near the best in Iowa history are out of touch. Not even close.

The main problem with your argument is that you are just wrong. He simply did not play anywhere close to as poorly as you are describing. The numbers back this up especially considering the absurd amount of drops Iowa has had.

Jon on the other hand is using statistics to make his point.

Replace the word terrible with average and you are getting allot closer to the truth. James has played average in Iowas losses, In past years that has been enough, this year it is not enough.

This.

The MSU game I could almost agree with, he was pretty inaccurate and it was at home. He was average in the other games and suffered from numerous drops that were perfectly thrown balls.

If by long balls you mean throw a 10-20 pass to McNutt and then mcnutt makes a move to get a long TD, then I agree with you.

really not impressed with vandys long ball this year. his best pass plays this year have been slants, hitch's, and crossing patterns. his fade needs some big improvement. it has been continuously under thrown. but if you need some one to thread a needle vandy is your man.

vandy in my opinion isn't great. he is between avg. and good. but we'll see how he progresses. hopefully for Iowa he becomes the great qb everyone wants him to be

Vandenberg is having one of the best seasons in Iowa football history. His 2624 passing yards is 8th best all time. His 23 TD passes is 4th best all time. He has the best 'pro' skill set of just about any Iowa QB I have seen and he's made just 13 starts.People trying to rip this kid are very, very out of touch.

Oh yeah, I forgot it was jvbs fault Iowa missed 2 fgs against and couldn't get stops when needed against Minn. Too bad he is so bad on D and special teams.

really are you that stupid or just blind or maybe your just watching the games on LSD.

Not really sure what more vandy can do. He hasn't lost any games for us and he has won soe for us. You guys that complain live in a fantasy land.

I know, right? The kids never gonna make it at the next level either as a kicker or a DE. Pathetic.

I love this post but its sad that noone believes it until it comes out of your mouth jon. The biggest crap I've ever heard is when you say someone isn't as good as his stats. after 11 games. 2600 yards. 23 touchdowns and only 5 ints. And apparently we can't crown him yet because he doesn't have the skills. I love incompetent people they make us look better.

jvb is not stanzi nor was stanzi a jvb. 2 different qb's. I prefer stanzi but I am not saying jvb is a bad qb.stanzi was a guy who could play horrible but if it came down to a game winning drive I would put my money on stanzi. he played with no fear and a short term memory. he didn't have the greatest mechanics but he got the job done. he was also a true leader.vandy has great mechanics and hes a true passer. hes got the tools and potential to be great. however he isn't a true leader YET. hopefully he'll get there. he also has to learn to let the last play go. and be more aggressive. hes got a cannon. I just wish he'd show it off more.
Um correction you mean you want senior stanzi over junior vandenberg which isn't fair. compare the 2 junior years.

JVB has fantastic numbers this season. His next step needs to be to get some big wins.

Stanzi who lacked good numbers until his SR year has a laundry list of big wins:

PSU 2008 (first win against top 5 team since 1990)
Outback Bowl 2008 season
@PSU 2009 (another win against top 5 team)
@Wisconsin 2009 (10 win team)
@MSU 2009
Orange Bowl 2009 season (biggest win for the program in 50 years)
MSU 2010 (top 10 team)

That is 5 huge wins outside Kinnick. With the exception of PSU 2009 Stanzi had a huge part of each.

JVB has 1 win away from Kinnick in his career. Like it or, QBs will always be judged first and foremost on wins.
