Blitzing. They did it a lot and no deep passes to keep them honest.
I had to turn the game off, but when is the last time we ran a well executed RB screen in the face of a blitz? Did we hit any on Saturday?

Iowa abandoned the run because of the way Maryland was defending, Kirk even said so in the post game presser. Maryland players being interviewed post game made it sound like they knew what was coming on every play
I've never understood how some posters think limiting an offense (which Rudock intentionally chooses with his play execution) leads to wins when Iowa's defense has been hiccuping with both edge defense and linebacker coverage since the UNI game. All great speculation, but...yesterday's D performance was atrocious. The play-calling/scheme/abandoning the run was atrocious.
How anyone can really care who plays QB is beyond me when the scheme is so awful, and the D is still "hiccuping".
Granted, I really believe we NEED both QBs, but it's just as well CJ didn't, for his own sake, have to experience yesterday's "events".

The pressure on JR would have been the same on CJ. CJ has proven he, too, can throw a pick-6, so turnovers might be a wash.
JR did NOT have a good game. But his performance, even on your list, is fourth in terms of impact.
If CJ comes in--and I wish he had--Numbers 1 through 3 are still VERY much in play, because #4 was only a factor in one of the turnovers, and given the observation of #2, inserting CJ doesn't change that.

This cant be overstated enough. THIS IS THE ISSUE. This scheme does the players no favors. Theyre behind the 8 ball before the ball is even snapped. I feel bad for the players I really do because many times they line up and have no chance.
Not that I remember. It was embarrassing. By the 4th I was hammered.
What blows me away is Brian Ferentz paces that sideline all damn day long next to his dad yet he doesn't chirp in his pops ear that perhaps we should give CJ a go? I work with my old man and while he too is stubborn when I suggest doing something new and making changes, while he is reluctant, he does get over the hump and we do move forward. Why in theeeee hell doesn't Brian start squeaking a bit louder? The more you look into this and other issues at Iowa the more it becomes clear that Kirk is a dictator and he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks he's doing it his way (which is the wrong f*****g way) and to hell with all the rest. The sooner he gets tossed to the curb the sooner we get better. This has the similar makings of Hayden's last year when we had all the talent in the world and coach keeps driving this thing further and further into the ground. Pull the cord while you can…..
I've been a long time lurker here but this loss and the comments it's generated riled me up enough i guess to post a comment on here.
I've seen a few post in here and have heard for years about what "a great guy" K.F. is and how he is all loaded with "integrity". What people of intregrity allow for their son to steal from the IA populace living in section 8 housing while daddy earns millions? How often are those of high integrity completely dissmissive of any responsibility for their output? K.F. favorite excuse is how his players stink or should I say, "they need to execute better". I could go on but the point remains. K.F. appears more of swindler/convict type mentallity while holding the illusion of "a stand up character" with some, what i would refer to, as a delusional section of the fanbase.
Anyway, the writing has been on the wall for years and i'd given up on K.F. leading this teams years ago. While I don't care anymore about how IA plays under K.F. it does irk me whenever I start hearing/reading "the stand up guy" arguement. It appears baseless and a means to justify his terrible product. No need to point out to me his charitble donations as it appears he has a little extra to give; so this really doesn't too much weight in my book. Or perhaps money is a huge factor in all of this as K.F. may be just trying to figure out ways to keep his poor family out of government assisted housing.
tldr...I'm not really happy w/ K.F.
Iowa abandoned the run because of the way Maryland was defending, Kirk even said so in the post game presser. Maryland players being interviewed post game made it sound like they knew what was coming on every play, that's GD, KF, and JRs fault. It's on JR because they know he's going to check down on almost every single play or he's going to throw behind the line of scrimmage.
Teams have been daring Iowa to go deep all year and it's just not happening enough because Rudock just isn't that good of a QB.
This was my problem as well.
Were our coaches hammered?

How many times were our "playmakers" targeted? I would consider our playmakers T.Smith, Powell, and Willes. Maybe 3? That's a problem.
I don't think a WR was targeted until late in the 3rd quarter. That's not happening with CJ in the game, ever. Also, I counted 9 possessions that were 3 and outs. That's including the possessions that were turnovers in the 1st 3 downs.. That's incredible because some games 9 possessions is about all we get. I think we had 4 possessions the 2nd half of the Pitt game.
