The QB Situation

I felt like they needed to have their decision made after the Maryland game and before the NW game, for the rest of the year. I am fearful of two things; either they don't have it figured out yet, or that Kirk has made his decision and will ride Rudock.

I think Jake is a solid QB and would be more effective in the type of offenses Ken O'Keefe ran. But given that he is in Greg Davis' train wreck of an offensive 'system' at Iowa, the strengths that CJB has seem a better fit. But for either QB, these route schemes are not ideal.

While Iowa has a plethora of issues right now, consistency at QB is a big one and one that can impact the locker room. Kirk has 13 days to come to a conclusion.

Don't hold your breath expecting some major change; you'll pass out. Pretty obvious Kirk has made his decision.

if I'm CJ, I'm exploring a transfer.

The only way a CJ transfer makes much sense to me would be:

1) after the season plays out...a lot can happen in the next 6 weeks
2) he would need to go to the FCS, otherwise he sits a year at FBS and has just one year to play wherever he goes and no certainty of being the starter. At Iowa, at least for his senior year, he would stand a real good chance of being the guy.

Still, there is too much ahead of Iowa yet this year to go here right now, IMO

Jon, you are right on the money with the QB position. I don't think KF would be fired, and he knows it. So he can stick to his stubborn ways without consequences...except for more losses on his record. Love his integrity. I just think his offensive philosophy is stuck in the 80's.

Is it integrity that has him lying to Beathard as well as the media and fans? He said he would play two QBs. After yesterday, it is clear that he had ZERO intention of doing that. He dangled the carrot to keep Beathard here in the offseason. Sokol was smart enough to not bite, Beathard bit. If I were him I would be regretting that decision this morning.

Kurt will say that he has two good QBs and that they will see how things play out. They plan on playing both QBs going forward even though everyone knows that is BS. He won't play Beathard if things are going good, because he will say he went with the hot hand. He won't play Beathard if the team is struggling, because he will say he felt more comfortable with Jake. He won't play Beathard if they get bad field position because he will say it wouldn't be fair to him. He won't play Beathard if they get good field position because he will not want to waste it.

If by some miracle, he actually does give Beathard a series, he will pull him out unless he goes full Johnny Manziel (probably would still pull him) and then will proceed to let Rudock go 3 and out for an entire half of football because of some gut feeling.

He has completely lost touch with the reality of his team. We are 7 games in to year 15 and his team has ZERO identity. They look like they are making it up on the fly, and they are terrible at it.

What blows me away is Brian Ferentz paces that sideline all damn day long next to his dad yet he doesn't chirp in his pops ear that perhaps we should give CJ a go? I work with my old man and while he too is stubborn when I suggest doing something new and making changes, while he is reluctant, he does get over the hump and we do move forward. Why in theeeee hell doesn't Brian start squeaking a bit louder? The more you look into this and other issues at Iowa the more it becomes clear that Kirk is a dictator and he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks he's doing it his way (which is the wrong f*****g way) and to hell with all the rest. The sooner he gets tossed to the curb the sooner we get better. This has the similar makings of Hayden's last year when we had all the talent in the world and coach keeps driving this thing further and further into the ground. Pull the cord while you can…..

TheBoat hit the nail on the head. I can't understand how a coach with an underperforming offense can be so stubborn not to try CJ who can run better especially when you are going into the wind and could use his running ability.

Jake was not on from 2nd qtr thru midway of 4th qtr and offense kept stalling.

Just play your players, CJ being one of them

Why does everyone assume that the apple falls far from the tree? What has Brian ever done that makes people think he is so much different than his dad?

All I am suggesting is that Brian say to pops put the damn back up in! I can't imagine he is walking that sideline watching Jake run the program into ground and not say "dad make a change before we all lose are flipping J.O.B.S!

I'm giving this season one more chance....but if KF trots Rudock out there to start against NW in 2 weeks, then I'm officially done this season.

I know, but maybe BF also thinks playing Jake is "in their best interest" as well. He hasn't done anything to show me that he disagrees with his dad.

Its either a big FU to the fans and media or he's a stubborn and pre-senile coot. Anyone with half a brain gives CJ a series in the second half. Especially after what happened at Pitt.

I'm still shaking my head. I blame both losses on our head coach Kurt Blandicheck.

Like Melvin Udall said, the best way to understand Kurt is to think of a coach, and take away reason and accountability.

I can guarantee Rudock will be the starter against NW. Also, KF is doing Rudock no favors in this situation either. He keeps trotting him out there, and Rudock continues to underwhelm. He's turning a fanbase against Rudock, who is a good kid.

Brian has enough to worry about with the poor job he is doing with the offensive line. He is in no position to be questioning other coaches poor decision making.

BTW....I agree CJ needs to be the QB.

Sure, Beathard should be playing more (perhaps even starting) but the issues on this team right now go a lot deeper than the QB. Woody Hayes once said that the team that blocks and tackles the best will usually win. Let's look at Iowa:

1. We couldn't stop the run the last two games. No one is tackling out there with any consistency, and our LB play is not good.
2. On the other side of the ball, our OL is not protecting the QB right now. Maryland put pressure on Rudock the entire day.

Until the blocking and tackling improves, I don't think it matters who plays QB.

We have two weeks to prepare for Northwestern. They have some talent, but nebraska really exposed them last night. Time to circle the wagons and put together 60 minutes of total effort and focus. Northwestern is a team we can beat

How long before KF loses the locker room? I think it may have begun on the field yesterday.

That's an illusion that JR will give you, regarding pressure..

He "feels" pressure that isn't there at times, starts stutter stepping and his fall down motion for the sack.
