The path forward

...y'know, there aren't a lot of 5-star recruits redshirting...makes me think that Patrick probably isn't a five-star recruit...

He has basketball skills of a 4 star recruit but has the frame and weight of a 2 star recruit. I don't know how that's going to work out.

I think, or would have Kreiner getting more of Nunge's minutes.
FWIW I’ve always been high on Nunge.

I really don’t think Kriener and Garza can coexist on the floor for extended periods. They are far too slow of foot for one to have to play the 4 spot. Nunge has much better footspeed and happens to be two inches taller than Kriener.

He isn’t a 5 star recruit. He currently ranks.

247 - 98th
Rivals - 68th
Espn - 58th

In my opinion much of his ranking has to do with future potential.

Yea, I guess I don't know what to expect. I saw some game as well when he was in. He'd have his moments, kind of like Garza. But, the coaches must have had a reason to redshirt him. ? get stronger. ? improve game. ? Bank a post player sec to depth and knowing Cook will probably leave early. I'm not saying he can't or won't be a very good player. Agree with not having Kreiner and Cook together. I actually never proposed that scenario, anyway.

For Nunge I think he was getting stronger. They said he’s up to 250 and reportedly 7 feet tall.

I never mentioned Cook in my post. Again, Garza and Kriener are at a serious footspeed disadvantage when they are together.

Dailey has to be kicking himself for not redshirting. He barely played that year and now if he transfers he’s going to have to sit out a full year. Maybe he can apply for an eligibility waiver because of the Dolphin incident? I’m sort of only half joking with that.
Yeah our depth chart is only reason he didn't. Because he certainly should have. I'm half surprised Nunge redshirted this year. Fran seems to not be a huge proponent of having kids do that. Mighta been Nunges idea which would have been a really smart thing on his behalf to come up with. But at that time he didn't think Pemsl would be out most of the year either...

I exported TC's conference stats to Excel and split it into 1st/2nd halves.

He's definitely sliding. Not getting fouled like he should, and not making free throws.

FG% down 9.2%, and FT% down 27.5%

And going by Conference, per 40 mins, Garza should be the one thinking about going pro...

So was Aaron White.

TC This year: 15 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 53.4% FG%.
AW Senior year: 16.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 52.1% FG%.
Aaron White was a much more versatile scorer than Cook is, and was also a much better ball handler. Cook is more physically imposing and can dominate at times, but his effectiveness is muted because he's not a great FT shooter and he's a turnover machine when he pushes too hard. Give me AW over TC anytime.

You usually stay fairly level-headed for a state fan, but you're mouth breathing now.

Just when you start to sound like you're smartly defending your arguments, you imply that TC is as good as Aaron White.

Do the same thing for Garza, that you did for Cook.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how you score your points. If the PPG total and FG% is the same....what difference does it really make? Where AW wins this argument is on the defensive end.
I'd take Uthoff over both of them, honestly.

McCafferey on Cook, after the game: "I thought he was really trying,” McCaffery said of Cook. “I think it was a step in the right direction.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

The Big10 is a finesse conference so it will work out great.

/Smidge of sarcasm to start and I don’t really know at the end. But how has Cook held up?

Look at the log jam of bodies we would have had at the four and five if Nunge and Pemsl had played. Someone had to redshirt. I said last spring that Nunge would make the most sense because he had the most potential and needed to get stronger. It looks like a better decision all the time.

We've seen what were going to get with Kriener and we've probably seen what were going to get with Pemsl. Redshirting them, and clogging up rotations down the road, would not have done anybody good. Of course Cordell ended up taking a medical anyway.

I predict Cook is gone. I think Dailey and Moss might go. Dailey transfers and Moss moves on from college basketball.

Connor isn’t going anywhere. Fran isn’t going anywhere.

Bonus - I think Cook plays with energy and passion in the postseason...BTT & NCAA. Lots of players go from off the radar to NBA draft picks by showcasing themselves in the postseason.

I don’t think Cook is getting drafted. But I could see him thinking this is his time to shine, attack the rim, rebound, make FTs and defend a little. If I’m his coach I’m using this “NBA Springboard” concept to get him pumped for the rest of his college career.

I agree -just don't let him shoot from further than 3 feet out!

My two cents; I'm higher on Moss than most of the posters here. I think that it is a confidence thing holding him back, I think he is the real deal. Cook peaked two years ago, he looks out of shape at times and dazed and confused, I hope he moves on. CMac has no business playing B1G basketball. Weiscamp will be one of the all time great Hawks when he is done playing here. Pemsl will be huge next year. Now we need a coach.

Can't disagree with anything you stated. I also think they may have biffed it on Moss, with his development/timing. I think he just needed more playing time with more confidence, like a consistent rotation. There were 2nd halves where you would never see him. I with Cook well and he's a unique talent and I hope the best for him going forward, but to be honest, I won't get sad when he moves on or graduates. It just seems he and the coaches are trying to advance or develop him and much of the "team" focus is on him. He kind of holds the team hostage in a way. I'm not saying he's not good for a team, but I can see the team playing better as a team once he moves on. I think there could be more dimensions added to the team along with a better defensive player. It's kind of weird and a weird situation. I respect the guy but I think he can hold a team back a bit. Strange.

Up in the air about CMac. He's still young but I don't know how that two sport deal is going to work out. If he can turn into a lock down defending specialist, take care of the ball and dish out half dozen assists per game, I'd take that. He can get his points as they come. If he could hold one of the opposing teams best players down in scoring, there could be a net gain there equivalent of scoring points. Agree on Weiskamp. Agree Pemsl can be huge. He'll be an older player at this point and have to hope he doesn't get some nagging injury(ies) that he is prone to.

I think we had the same group of players the year before didn't we? I don't think anything changed. I agree it'd have been a waste to play one of them hardly at all like they would have been. And he was a prime canidate for it for the reasons you stated. It seemed like Fran wanted to play Nunge and Garza early their Freshman yrs to see what he had in them first. Next yr could be interesting.

I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that Cook leaves. We could have the same crowded front court again possibly. Something would have to give and who would transfer in that scenario between Nunge, Kreiner, and Pemsl is anyones guess.

Moss has had less games in which he's disappeared compared to last year, if that means anything. Still way too many though.
