The Hawkeyes are Playing in Cancun this Fall

So Iowa will play a game vs one of the Mayan Division(is this a good omen right before the Mayan end of the world deal?) at Carver, then play a regular two game tourny in the Rivera Division in Cancun? If we end up playing DePaul and WSU, those are respectable RPI schools, simply by their own schedules being respectable.

As we found out this year, we need to try to avoid playing 300+ RPI teams, and of course avoid losses to anyone above 100RPI.

DePaul is bad again this year. Oliver Purnell is in his second year, like Fran, but is further behind. Now, one sidenote, former Iowa assistant Billy Garret's son,Billy jr. is a top 50 player and will attend DePaul to play for Purnell and his dad,who is now an assistant for the Blue Demons. Could be an interesting matchup at pg between two frosh if Gesell is starting at that point. Garrett will be starting, I suspect.

WSU is a consistent winner anymore,so I suspect a win over them would not hurt Iowa at all,and might help, and a loss is not disasterous but disappointing,to be sure.

Looks like a fun week for fans tho...might check this out.

WSU will be the returning MVC champion, this is the same conference that UNI, Drake and Creightom are in, Depaul is in the BE, which will get 9 into the dance, Major BB conference, not a lower level conference like the one Cambell played in. besides it is a tourney where schools don't control who they play as they play the winner of the prior game except the 1st game, the ACC/BT challenge is still a good game and like Iowa Clemson may finish with the same record and finish in 5th place in the ACC, who i get the feeling the matchup might just be NCState or Miami as all 3 are in a position to finish 5th-7th with Clemson, which is a big reason, on why i am confused by people claiming Clemson is a bad loss,
to me, how is losing to a team in the middle of the ACC is a bad loss is baffeling, ISU is improving so that will help Iowa, the question now is who will be the last 7 opponents will be, one of the 7 will probably come from the Pac-12
its a start i don't think a schedule of Duke, Kansas, UNC and Syracuse does them any good

But we already play a bunch of MVC teams, so playing one more is not a huge upgrade in the schedule, and DePaul is probably one of the 5 worst BCS teams this season.

I believe that now that the old home and away series with Drake and UNI have been replaced with a single contest vs UNI or Drake, annually, we will only play one MVC team, probably UNI next year,at this point anyway.

Boy, you sure are picky about who Iowa should play. Maybe 31 games vs the Big Ten? Did playing Creighton mess up our schedule this year?

WSU is a top MVC team that will get an at-large bid this year. So,we should turn our nose up at playing them? Replacing Creighton on the schedule with WSU is a downgrade? I am more concerned with replacing the Chicago St.'s of the schedule.

Neat tournament, this will be fun for the fans and the team. But this tournament will not help improve the non conference very much.

Current RPI of these teams:

Riviera Division
DePaul - 201
Iowa - 130
Western Kentucky - 220
Wichita State - 10

Mayan Division
Austin Peay St - 188
Gardner-Webb - 297
Howard -292
Western Carolina -245

Granted next year things will change but about the only quality opponent here is Wichita State and they lose a lot to graduation. But they are always competitive and should Iowa face them I would anticipate WSU to be top 100 RPI year as they typically are. They will probably set up these 2 schools to face off in the championship game. The other 2 in the division are really weak but at least strong enough RPI wise to not really hurt you unless you get beat by one of them. DePaul will not be relevant again until they improve their facilities just the fact they are in Chicago is not helping them anymore.

The teams in the Mayan Division are horrid. Since Iowa will be getting 2 games against those pool of teams they may want to take another look at rescheduling against teams like Chicago State, Northern Illinois, ect ect. Just playing those schools and winning will hurt the RPI.

I am actually against scheduling up, and, if you would have read my earlier post, I have no problem with the competition here.

I was talking about Herby saying that this tournament demonstrates an upgrade over last season's schedule, and I said that it was not.

Yes, that does not look good at this point. I will say that generally Austin Peay,Western Ky, and WSU are decent programs,so maybe this year is rebuilding for the first two. I know that WKy was very good a couple of years ago,and that they beat us out for a big strong kid that we wanted pretty bad. Name escapes me but he was a 2012 recruit,a ky prep forward that opted to stay close to home.

I agree with the rest of the schedule..we better cover ourselves in case this tourny field is real bad. Get that Pac 12 team on there,at least, along with ISU,UNI,ACC Challenge.

who are the 2 home game opponents? i am sure the Drake and UNI games contract expired

Didnt read the article herby?

"The tournament format includes eight games played in the United States (Nov. 15 and 17) where the four teams in the Riviera Division host the four schools in the Mayan Division. All eight teams then travel to Cancun, Mexico for two games (Nov. 20-21) played at the Moon Palace Resort. A champion is crowned in both divisions."

2 of the following schools will be coming to Carver for a home game:

Austin Peay State
Gardner Webb
Howard
Western Carolina

how can having a top 10 rpi team and playing a BE team is bad, and not a upgrade, again these type of tournies the teams have no choice who they play, sorry to say but every team in the BCS Level play lower level teams and they alway's will, and at this season's RPI will probably change next year, nobody know if Depaul will improve or not, WSU may fall off the RPI map.
the Cancun tourney is a step up, hopefully the following year we can get invited to the Great Alaska Shootout

i read it there was no mention of specfic opponents, so its a pick-em out of 4 potential teams, at this time we have no clue as to who we play, so i will ask again which of those 4 do we play, you sounded like you knew

We know its 2 out of the following 4 teams:

Austin Peay State
Howard
Western Carolina
Gardner Webb

We know we will be playing 2 of those teams in non-conference home games. That is more than we knew before Spank posted this article.

and we know Iowa will be playing 2 out of these 3:

DePaul
Wichita State
Western Kentucky

That may represent about 1/3rd of the non conference schedule for next season. We know Iowa State will be on the schedule, either Drake or UNI (or both), and a ACC opponent. So now we are close to knowing 1/2 the OOC schedule.

3 in the Cancun tourney, 1 ACC/BT opponent, ISU and 1 of Drake/UNI, 6 out of the 12 opponents are known, and if the Pac 12/BT starts that is the 7th of the 12, depending upon the last 5 that looks like a upgrade in the making to me,

Four games in the Cancun tourney.

I don't know how you consider the Cancun tournament an upgrade based on the field I am looking at.
