The fact of the matter is....

There you have it. You're fine with a coach that's never going to win a BIG title because no coach since Lute Olsen has. That's not an acceptable attitude for me. That's an attitude for losers. Which may be fine for you but it's never going to be fine for me.

No I think Fran has a pretty good chance to win one. I also think there's a good chance he's here for 10 more years so I'm not going to make some bet with a douche I don't even know that might not get paid for another decade.

Knowing that idiot Barta, you're probably right. Fran will be here 10 more years with or without anything to show for it. I don't care if you bet me or not. It won't change my opinion on it.

So in your opinion, do you think if Barta went after another coach, the odds would be better or worse that the new coach would be better than Fran? I think they are not only way worse, but if we happened to get a better coach there is a good chance that coach would pull a Lute and leave anyway. There are maybe 5 programs in the country that would fire Fran for what he's done so far.

I'm not interested in any "what if it ends up worse" scenarios. I don't stay in my house because I might get hit by a car crossing the street. It's not how I'm wired. If you want the best, you have to keep trying to hire the best. Lickliter was a mistake, so you get rid of him and hire Fran. Fran has had 7 years to get a BIG title. He hasn't produced one. Get rid of him and find another coach that wants to win a BIG title here. And so on, and so on. If you hire a coach that provides a BIG title and decides to leave for another program, you go out and hire another coach. Not looking for a championship coach because the results might be worse than they are now....is not anything I'm interested in. As long as that is what I think we have, I will voice my opinion on it. It's not like I'm going to every thread on the 1st page talking negative about Fran and the current staff. I'm not. I'm not starting thread after thread about how horrible the program is or anything even remotely close to that. Nobody is forcing anyone to respond to what I post.

Ladies and gentlemen, we've found a worse AD than Barta. Just keep firing good coach after good coach until you hopefully some day finally find a great coach. What a great strategy. It's even possible we already have a great coach who has had some bad luck. But no point in taking any chances. He's had his 7 years so kick him to the curb. Then let's see which coach wants to go to the one school in the nation where you have to be elite or you get fired after the magic year 7.

This is whole thread is epic.

Lightning's philosophy is exactly how we ended up with Alford, and then Lickliter. The 2000's and early 2010's sure were a blast, weren't they? And now, only almost two short decades later, we're (some of us anyway) thinking we have a chance of getting it done. Unless you have a guarantee from a rock-solid proven guy that he's your next coach, no way do I cut Fran loose at this point just because he hasn't won the conference yet. Sans this rebuilding year, the trajectory has been upwards.

And no, I'm not a "what if we do worse??" kind of guy, but some of us happen to still believe that Fran stands a fair chance of winning a conference title.. Guess that makes us losers, then. Well, so be it.

Some people can't admit that rebuilding years happen, and throw a hissy when it does. And never mind the fact that Fran had to put out a huge dumpster fire, either.

The complainers are going to complain. If Fran wins a title in the next few years all we'll hear is how he couldn't do it without bringing in his children to play. Let's see him win with real recruits that he has to work for or just imagine how bad we'd be if his progeny were women. Like he says no one forces us to answer him. Give up trying to convince him. When we win it's because the other team was bad and we were lucky. When we lose the coach stinks and the players aren't good enough for D-1 and should transfer. Fran is doing fine and I'll enjoy this team and enjoy the future even more.

I was all for moving on from Davis at the time. But he had a lot longer career here and all of his great years were done with someone else's recruits. Fran had just as good, if not a better chance to win a championship than some other random Joe. Plus he plays a fun style of basketball so the games are fun to watch. I can't wait for the next game every game, and I can't wait for the next season every season with Fran.

I agree, pretty much. I think Davis had taken us as far as he could and it was pretty obvious after 13 years that we'd be Top 3-4 in the conference in the better years, but would never win the league. Although in retrospect, we showed a pretty solid coach the door, and am not sure it was such a good decision. People can argue that until the cows come home, though, I guess.

As for Fran, I believe he could possibly win the conference. He was close last year, except for that dratted meltdown.. But, once he got this program back on it's feet, he's had a couple teams that have made some noise. Just gotta figure out that February/March thing when the stakes start to rise, but overall, I like what I've seen under his leadership. And the way this uber-young team is playing gives me hope for the next few years.

I would not have ever given a football coach a 10 year contract. Much less 2 of them.
I would have never hired Lickliter.
I'm already doing better than Barta and YOU. I'm looking for GREAT coach. You can keep swooning over 2nd rd blowout losses. You're a loser and it's all you've ever known. You're right where you want to be. Mr. Participation Trophy.

Davis nose dived this program. Alfraud was trying to stepping stone us right into the Indiana job that he always coveted.

Everything Alvarez does revolves around winning! He won't tolerate excuses. He never has. If I told you some of the things he did as the football coach at Mason City, you'd probably call me a liar.
It's a simple matter of having the expectations that you CAN win a conference title here or at Wisconsin and then finding the right guy to do the job.
You need look no further than Wisconsin to see the truth in that. Dog shit program in football and basketball before Alvarez went to Madison. Now look at them. He turned that football program around as HC and kept them there, while elevating the basketball program as AD.
The rest of your excuses are just that. Excuses. Keep your excuses to yourself when you comment to me. I got no time for them.
How about your a fucking idiot and go cheer for another team while Fran is here.

And another Internet AD. I can't believe you don't run a college program by now. Make sure you put your "ideas" on your resume. I'm sure you'll make some people laugh.

Thanks for the correction. I must edit.....

It has been 38 years since the last Big conference championship. Even more reason for Fran to depart.....

I've been waiting ever since 1979 for another BigTen conference men's basketball championship.....

That is approximately 38 years......

Been a while, but I must agree, no Big title this season and Fran Must be relieved of duty.....

Championships haven't been all that frequent for the Hawks, having won conference championships in: 1923, 1926, 1945, 1955, 1956, 1968, 1970, 1979.....

If you do the math, that is three conference championships in approximately 60 years. So yes, I do understand your valid reasoning. Fran MUST GO.....

Perfect.....

Ya I'd run him off too. I mean we got one Internet poster that wants more. And that Internet poster is the most important Hawkeye fan there is. He's also smarter than everyone including Kirk, Fran, Alveraz, and Barta combined. Which is why he has a job in athletics.

Don't worry guys, Lighting's eyes told him that Juwan McCloud was the best PG at the PTL, so he's proven he can be plenty wrong before.

What's comical is earlier in this thread he provided a list of the teams that have won the conference in the last 10 years. Fran is in year 7, so he still has 3 years left before year 10. If we don't compete for a conference title in the next 3 years, then sure I think he will deserve some heat.

If you watched the Iowa game yesterday there was an interesting tidbit at halftime. The announcers said that Duke has not won a ACC conference title in the last 7 years, and they aren't in position to win it this year. It just goes to show you that winning conference championships isn't as easy as some would believe.

if we don't compete for a conference title in 10 years, he deserves some heat????????? Wow. I would love to come work for you earning a 7 figure salary! Got any openings for a hot head with marginal results? I'd settle for a 5 year contract in exchange for mediocrity.

You sure like your excuses, don't you loser? Here's your award.
